Our first intern of the summer, Alex, has been working hard in the datacenter making sure that all the drives are spinning, and Marketing now has its first intern of the summer! Ari joins us from Indiana University, where he studies marketing and sales. Lets learn a bit more about Ari, shall we?

What is your Backblaze Title?
Summer Intern.

Where are you originally from?
I’m from Glencoe, IL, a northern suburb of Chicago, and have lived there most of my life.

What attracted you to Backblaze?
As a Midwesterner, I have never worked on the west coast, and I have also never worked for a smaller start-up before. I was very excited to have the opportunity to work for a company that is both. Backblaze has introduced me to the laid-back, yet efficient culture of Silicon Valley, which I find very appealing.

What do you expect to learn while being at Backblaze?
As a marketing intern, I hope to gain insight into how Backblaze was able to leverage its marketing techniques in order to transform itself from a tiny start-up to one of the best cloud backup companies out there!

Where else have you worked?
I have had internships both previous summer; first in the marketing department of Garvin Industries, an electrical manufacturer, and then in the human resources department of Follett Corporation, a college and high school bookstore franchise. I also work part-time while attending university doing some marketing and finance work for Consulting Partners, a financial consulting firm.

Where did you go to school?
I am currently in the summer break before my senior year of undergrad at Indiana University in Bloomington. I am studying marketing and professional sales at the Kelley School of Business there.

What’s your dream job?
It is hard to say because I have so many interests and am pretty uncertain about what my future will bring. Ideally, I suppose, I would love a job where I can bring my three favorite things together: travel, humanitarianism, and business (particularly marketing). Maybe one day I will start my own international humanitarian aid organization, but who knows?

Favorite place you’ve traveled?
It is extremely difficult to pick just one place because I am such an avid fan of travel that I enjoy pretty much everyplace I go. As of right now, if I had to pick one, I would go with Morocco, where just this past spring break I went on my first trip as a solo traveler. I backpacked and “Couchsurfed” around this beautiful country, where I had an amazing time and met many incredible people.

Favorite hobby?
Travelling is my favorite thing in the world. If I can’t travel at the moment, then my next favorite thing is planning travels, reading about travels, and discussing travels. As one of my favorite quotes says…
“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag

Star Trek or Star Wars?
Star Wars, by default. I was a big Star Wars fan as a kid, especially the LEGO Star Wars games. I never really got into Star Trek though. I only watched the new movies because of Simon Pegg and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Coke or Pepsi?
Coke. Definitely Coke. Pepsi is for people with low cola standards.

Favorite food?
That is a very tough question since I like pretty much all food, but having to pick one, I’d say that sushi shine above all the rest.

Why do you like certain things?
I like certain things because they either (1) make me a better person, (2) make the world a better place, or (3) taste good.

Them’s fightin’ words about Pepsi, but most of us in the office tend to side with the Coke contingent – so you’ll fit right in! Welcome aboard!

Annalisa Joins the Support Crew

Blog-Annalisa

As Backblaze continues to grow, we’re constantly on the lookout for talented folks in all of our departments. Our latest hire is Annalisa, who is joining our Support team as a Junior Technical Support Representative. Lets learn a bit more about Annalisa, shall well?

What is your Backblaze Title?
Junior Technical Support Representative

Where are you originally from?
I was born and raised in West Des Moines, IA, but have spent the last decade with Baton Rouge, LA being my homebase.

What attracted you to Backblaze?
The simplicity of the product and the atmosphere/attitude of the employees is what attracted me to Backblaze.

What do you expect to learn while being at Backblaze?
I expect to learn as much as possible about how cloud backup actually works.

Where else have you worked?
Since school, I’ve worked in Nashville, New Orleans, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and Baton Rouge. I am ready to not move again.

Where did you go to school?
Middle Tennessee State University for Sound Engineering.

What’s your dream job?
Someday I would like to be the ADR Sound Mixer on big budget movies, or mix an album for Justin Timberlake.

Favorite place you’ve traveled?
My favorite place to visit is Philadelphia. The scenery is beautiful and there is so much history everywhere.

Favorite hobby?
I love creating unique Doctor Who or Marvel Cross-stitch.

Of what achievement are you most proud?
Creating and fully executing a sound system in a gym with no complaints from the audience.

Coke or Pepsi?
Diet Pepsi

Why do you like certain things?
I like things that make me think or end up making me learn something.

Annalisa joins the select few folks in the office that prefer Pepsi to Coke – but we’ll keep on stocking it. Welcome Annalisa, and if the sound quality in our videos gets better, you’ll know who to thank!

Meet The Interns: Alex

Post Syndicated from Yev original https://www.backblaze.com/blog/meet-interns-alex/

Intern_Alex
It’s summer time and that means our latest crop of interns are coming! Our first intern started a week ago and has been hard at work in our datacenter, helping our operations department keep our storage pods spinning. Lets take a moment and learn more about Alex, shall we?

What is your Backblaze Title?
Datacenter Intern.

Where are you originally from?

I’m a native of the Napa Valley, some three or four generations of my family have lived there. I was born at St. Helena Hospital, grew up in Calistoga, and now live in Napa (the city); all in the Napa Valley. Fun fact: the default Windows XP background (“Bliss”) was photographed on Highway 121 just southwest of Napa!

What attracted you to Backblaze?

My brother Zack has worked for Backblaze for at least several years now, and I have always been interested in tech. When I heard that Backblaze might be interested in hiring me as a summer intern between semesters, it seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass up. So, here I am!

What do you expect to learn while being at Backblaze?

I’m really interested in learning more about the operations of the datacenter and all the little details that make everything work in harmony (or what passes for that, at least). I’m sure I’m going to learn a lot about UNIX shell commands, about the failure rate of various types of hard drives, and probably whether anyone is brave enough to eat the last ghost pepper in the break room (not me, seriously).

Where else have you worked?

Technically, the only other employer I’ve had has been a temp agency in Napa, but I’ve gotten various kinds of work from them. Bottling, packaging, and palletizing wine at various wineries mostly; however, I’ve done a few other things like grape sorting during harvest, moving around the contents of various pallets in warehouses, and aerosol can assembly and packaging. Some wine bottles I’ve seen hold 6 or more liters – at that point it’s so heavy you need something with wheels to move a single bottle.

Where did do you go to school?

After high school, I originally went to the local community college in Napa, Napa Valley College. There, I did my general education classes and got an AS degree in Natural Science & Mathematics. I currently go to school at California State University, Sacramento (Sac State), majoring in Computer Science. I’m happy to have a job, if even temporarily, where I can learn about something at least tangentially related to the field in which I want to work – experience is everything these days!

What’s your dream job?

A job where I can continually learn, and apply that knowledge in a useful manner.

Favorite place you’ve traveled?

To be honest, I haven’t really traveled much. Of the few places I have been, however, I like Crater Lake in Oregon. It’s a great place if you can manage to be there when the lake is clearly visible, though it is pretty cold sometimes at that altitude.

Favorite hobby?

Gaming, for sure, followed closely by reading and exploring the strange depths of the Internet. Currently working my way through Dark Souls III, although I’ve had to basically relearn how to play as I’m on a different computer with a different controller.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

Star Wars, if only because I’m more familiar with the universe. Not intimately familiar, but I haven’t watched much of Star Trek at all. Star Wars also gave rise to Spaceballs, which is a great movie in my opinion. I do have to give some respect to Star Trek, though, for using the show as an analogue for social issues.

Coke or Pepsi?

Water. I will judge you on your water quality, though; I like cold, clean water and I will go out of my way to find it.

Favorite food?

Oh man, I like a lot of food. I think narrowing it down to one might be sacrilege.

Why do you like certain things?

Because? I’m not sure I can answer that question effectively, my tastes are too eclectic to generalize about all of them.

Anything else you’d like you’d like to tell us?

I know random trivia about obscure things. No real reason for it, but if you bring up a topic I might just know something interesting about it. Disclaimer: your definition of interesting may not be the same as mine.

Welcome aboard Alex, we’ll keep the fresh, cold, crisp water stocked for you!

Still $5/Month

Post Syndicated from Yev original https://www.backblaze.com/blog/unlimited-cloud-backup-still-5-month/

Backblaze Five Dollars

On June 2nd, 2008, when Backblaze was still just five guys hammering away on a big red box in a one-bedroom apartment turned office, Backblaze went into “Public Beta” with version 1.0.0.71. With great fanfare we announced unlimited online backup of your Mac (the PC was later) for just $5 a month. We received coverage in TechCrunch, ArsTechnica and more, it was great. But here’s a deep dark secret, we started charging customers $5/month even before the June 4th launch. In fact, below is the very first deposit receipt we ever received.

First Backblaze Payment

Sharp eyed readers will notice that the person making the payment is Tim Nufire (tnufire), our head of operations. Before you go and call that cheating, Tim was not actually reimbursed for his $5 — it was our first bit of revenue. In fact Tim started a “tradition” — having all employees pay for having Backblaze on their work computer. A tradition we finally did away with about 2 years ago — though we still pay for Backblaze on our personal PCs and Macs.

While other companies reduce features, or raise prices, Backblaze has kept our price the same. We did this by continuously reducing our cost structure with Storage Pod improvements. Then we designed and built a highly scalable storage system using Backblaze Vaults and our own Reed-Solomon erasure coding library which we open-sourced. We’ve also managed to weather a few bumps along the way, like when Backblaze was almost acquired and the Thailand Drive crisis. In any case, 8 years ago we started with $5/month for our online backup service, the same price it is today and will be tomorrow.

We figured it might be fun to see what else you could get for just $5. Let’s take a look at the Fiverr — a website practically dedicated to the notion of something costing just $5…

What can you get for $5?

  1. 1 vector illustration
  2. 1 black and white anime-style portrait
  3. A 40-word Spokesperson video
  4. A 500-word article which is interesting and grammatically correct
  5. 75 Minute voice-over
  6. A Psychic Reading
  7. Have a “sexy” Happy Birthday song sung for you
  8. Get one error fixed on your WordPress site

Even though some things are getting more pricey, like a $5 foot long now being $6, there are also plenty of everyday things that you can get for $5, like a box of girl scout cookies for example. Or, for less than $.017 per day, you can get all your data automatically backed up and available in the cloud! It’s your $5.00 — choose wisely.

Either way, Backblaze is still…just $5/month.

Happy 9th Birthday Backblaze

Post Syndicated from Yev original https://www.backblaze.com/blog/happy-9th-birthday-backblaze/

Happy Birthday Backblaze

Backblaze turns 9 today! That’s right, back on April 20th, 2007 Backblaze was officially incorporated in Delaware. We wrote about our 5th birthday back in 2012, but we wanted to take a moment and look back at the last 4 years. We’ve been pretty busy.

Over the last 4 years:

  • The Backblaze team has grown by over 240%, and we’re still hiring.
  • Our Hard Drive Stats continue to be incredibly popular.
  • We’ve increased the number of customer files we’ve restored by 10x, from 1.2 Billion to over 12 Billion.
  • We’ve increased the amount of customer data we store by 10x from 20 Petabytes to over 200 Petabytes.
  • Backblaze Mobile apps made their debut for iOS and Android.
  • We’ve graced the Deloitte Fast 500 list with our presence – twice.
  • Backblaze Vaults launched and continue to revolutionize storage.
  • Embracing our open source roots we’ve released even more secret sauce with Reed-Solomon erasure coding.
  • We continued to deliver storage innovation to the open source community by delivering Storage Pod versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0.
  • Launched Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage, the lowest cost Cloud Storage on the planet to complement our Backblaze Personal and Backblaze Business Backup products. Catblaze, launched shortly thereafter on April 1st, 2016.

We’ve got a lot of cool projects coming down the pipe, and we couldn’t be more excited to share them with you, but they’ll have to wait. On this 4/20, our birthday, even though your friends probably aren’t idiots, listen to our friend SecuriTay and remind them to back up their machines:

Planned Maintenance (Thursday 2-4PM PDT)

Post Syndicated from Yev original https://www.backblaze.com/blog/planned-maintenance-thursday/

blog-maintenance
As part of our Backblaze B2 maintenance window (Thursday 2-3pm Pacific) we are doing maintenance on some core Backblaze systems and may experience longer downtime affecting Backblaze B2, Backblaze Personal, and Backblaze Business Backup systems. The planned maintenance will be from 2-4PM Pacific.

During this time no new Backblaze or Backblaze B2 accounts can be created.

Additionally, during this time, some users may not be able to:

  • Log in to www.backblaze.com
  • Access and utilize Backblaze B2
  • Create Personal Backup and Business Backup Restores
  • Start downloading newly created restores (restores already downloading should continue)
  • Continue uploads from their computer (though data will be scanned and uploads will resume automatically after the maintenance)
  • Access and utilize the Backblaze Mobile Apps

Not all Backblaze customers will be affected during the maintenance window, but it is best to assume you will not have access to the Backblaze services as noted above during the maintenance window.

All Backblaze services are expected to resume once maintenance is complete.

We will be updating this post with information as we go through the system maintenance, as well as updating our Twitter and Facebook feeds for more information.
