WordPress is the most popular CMS (Content Management System) for websites, with almost 30% of all websites in the world using WordPress. That’s a lot of sites — over 350 million!

In this post we’ll talk about the different approaches to keeping the data on your WordPress website safe.

Stop the Presses! (Or the Internet!)

As we were getting ready to publish this post, we received news from UpdraftPlus, one of the biggest WordPress plugin developers, that they are supporting Backblaze B2 as a storage solution for their backup plugin. They shipped the update (1.13.9) this week. This is great news for Backblaze customers! Your WordPress website data is on a web server that’s most likely located in a large data center. You might wonder why it is necessary to have a backup of your website if it’s in a data center. Website data can be lost in a number of ways, including mistakes by the website owner (been there), hacking, or even domain ownership dispute (I’ve seen it happen more than once). A website backup also can provide a history of changes you’ve made to the website, which can be useful. As an overall strategy, it’s best to have a backup of any data that you can’t afford to lose for personal or business reasons.

Your web hosting company might provide backup services as part of your hosting plan. If you are using their service, you should know where and how often your data is being backed up. You don’t want to find out too late that your backup plan was not adequate.

Sites on WordPress.com are automatically backed up by VaultPress (Automattic), which also is available for self-hosted WordPress installations. If you don’t want the work or decisions involved in managing the hosting for your WordPress site, WordPress.com will handle it for you. You do, however, give up some customization abilities, such as the option to add plugins of your own choice.

Very large and active websites might consider WordPress VIP by Automattic, or another premium WordPress hosting service such as Pagely.com.

This post is about backing up self-hosted WordPress sites, so we’ll focus on those options.

WordPress Backup

Backup strategies for WordPress can be divided into broad categories depending on 1) what you back up, 2) when you back up, and 3) where the data is backed up.

With server data, such as with a WordPress installation, you should plan to have three copies of the data (the 3-2-1 backup strategy). The first is the active data on the WordPress web server, the second is a backup stored on the web server or downloaded to your local computer, and the third should be in another location, such as the cloud.

We’ll talk about the different approaches to backing up WordPress, but we recommend using a WordPress plugin to handle your backups. A backup plugin can automate the task, optimize your backup storage space, and alert you of problems with your backups or WordPress itself. We’ll cover plugins in more detail, below.

What to Back Up?

The main components of your WordPress installation are:

You should decide which of these elements you wish to back up. The database is the top priority, as it contains all your website posts and pages (exclusive of media). Your current theme is important, as it likely contains customizations you’ve made. Following those in priority are any other files you’ve customized or made changes to.

You can choose to back up the WordPress core installation and plugins, if you wish, but these files can be downloaded again if necessary from the source, so you might not wish to include them. You likely have all the media files you use on your website on your local computer (which should be backed up), so it is your choice whether to back these up from the server as well.

If you wish to be able to recreate your entire website easily in case of data loss or disaster, you might choose to back up everything, though on a large website this could be a lot of data.

Generally, you should 1) prioritize any file that you’ve customized that you can’t afford to lose, and 2) decide whether you need a copy of everything in order to get your site back up quickly. These choices will determine your backup method and the amount of storage you need.

A good backup plugin for WordPress enables you to specify which files you wish to back up, and even to create separate backups and schedules for different backup contents. That’s another good reason to use a plugin for backing up WordPress.

When to Back Up?

You can back up manually at any time by using the Export tool in WordPress. This is handy if you wish to do a quick backup of your site or parts of it. Since it is manual, however, it is not a part of a dependable backup plan that should be done regularly. If you wish to use this tool, go to Tools, Export, and select what you wish to back up. The output will be an XML file that uses the WordPress Extended RSS format, also known as WXR. You can create a WXR file that contains all of the information on your site or just portions of the site, such as posts or pages by selecting: All content, Posts, Pages, or Media.
Note: You can use WordPress’s Export tool for sites hosted on WordPress.com, as well.

Many of the backup plugins we’ll be discussing later also let you do a manual backup on demand in addition to regularly scheduled or continuous backups.

Note:  Another use of the WordPress Export tool and the WXR file is to transfer or clone your website to another server. Once you have exported the WXR file from the website you wish to transfer from, you can import the WXR file from the Tools, Import menu on the new WordPress destination site. Be aware that there are file size limits depending on the settings on your web server. See the WordPress Codex entry for more information. To make this job easier, you may wish to use one of a number of WordPress plugins designed specifically for this task.

You also can manually back up the WordPress MySQL database using a number of tools or a plugin. The WordPress Codex has good information on this. All WordPress plugins will handle this for you and do it automatically. They also typically include tools for optimizing the database tables, which is just good housekeeping.

A dependable backup strategy doesn’t rely on manual backups, which means you should consider using one of the many backup plugins available either free or for purchase. We’ll talk more about them below.

Which Format To Back Up In?

In addition to the WordPress WXR format, plugins and server tools will use various file formats and compression algorithms to store and compress your backup. You may get to choose between zip, tar, tar.gz, tar.gz2, and others. See The Most Common Archive File Formats for more information on these formats.

Select a format that you know you can access and unarchive should you need access to your backup. All of these formats are standard and supported across operating systems, though you might need to download a utility to access the file.

Where To Back Up?

Once you have your data in a suitable format for backup, where do you back it up to?

We want to have multiple copies of our active website data, so we’ll choose more than one destination for our backup data. The backup plugins we’ll discuss below enable you to specify one or more possible destinations for your backup. The possible destinations for your backup include:

A backup folder on your web server
A backup folder on your web server is an OK solution if you also have a copy elsewhere. Depending on your hosting plan, the size of your site, and what you include in the backup, you may or may not have sufficient disk space on the web server. Some backup plugins allow you to configure the plugin to keep only a certain number of recent backups and delete older ones, saving you disk space on the server.
Email to you
Because email servers have size limitations, the email option is not the best one to use unless you use it to specifically back up just the database or your main theme files.
FTP, SFTP, SCP, and WebDAV are all widely-supported protocols for transferring files over the internet and can be used if you have access credentials to another server or supported storage device that is suitable for storing a backup.
Sync service (Dropbox, SugarSync, Google Drive, OneDrive)
A sync service is another possible server storage location though it can be a pricier choice depending on the plan you have and how much you wish to store.
Cloud storage (Backblaze B2, Amazon S3, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Rackspace)
A cloud storage service can be an inexpensive and flexible option with pay-as-you go pricing for storing backups and other data.

A good website backup strategy would be to have multiple backups of your website data: one in a backup folder on your web hosting server, one downloaded to your local computer, and one in the cloud, such as with Backblaze B2.

If I had to choose just one of these, I would choose backing up to the cloud because it is geographically separated from both your local computer and your web host, it uses fault-tolerant and redundant data storage technologies to protect your data, and it is available from anywhere if you need to restore your site.

Backup Plugins for WordPress

Probably the easiest and most common way to implement a solid backup strategy for WordPress is to use one of the many backup plugins available for WordPress. Fortunately, there are a number of good ones and are available free or in “freemium” plans in which you can use the free version and pay for more features and capabilities only if you need them. The premium options can give you more flexibility in configuring backups or have additional options for where you can store the backups.

How to Choose a WordPress Backup Plugin

When considering which plugin to use, you should take into account a number of factors in making your choice.

Is the plugin actively maintained and up-to-date? You can determine this from the listing in the WordPress Plugin Repository. You also can look at reviews and support comments to get an idea of user satisfaction and how well issues are resolved.

Does the plugin work with your web hosting provider? Generally, well-supported plugins do, but you might want to check to make sure there are no issues with your hosting provider.

Does it support the cloud service or protocol you wish to use? This can be determined from looking at the listing in the WordPress Plugin Repository or on the developer’s website. Developers often will add support for cloud services or other backup destinations based on user demand, so let the developer know if there is a feature or backup destination you’d like them to add to their plugin.

Other features and options to consider in choosing a backup plugin are:

  • Whether encryption of your backup data is available
  • What are the options for automatically deleting backups from the storage destination?
  • Can you globally exclude files, folders, and specific types of files from the backup?
  • Do the options for scheduling automatic backups meet your needs for frequency?
  • Can you exclude/include specific database tables (a good way to save space in your backup)?

WordPress Backup Plugins Review

Let’s review a few of the top choices for WordPress backup plugins.


UpdraftPlus is one of the most popular backup plugins for WordPress with over one million active installations. It is available in both free and Premium versions.

UpdraftPlus just released support for Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage in their 1.13.9 update on September 25. According to the developer, support for Backblaze B2 was the most frequent request for a new storage option for their plugin. B2 support is available in their Premium plugin and as a stand-alone update to their standard product.

Note: The developers of UpdraftPlus are offering a special 20% discount to Backblaze customers on the purchase of UpdraftPlus Premium by using the coupon code backblaze20. The discount is valid until the end of Friday, October 6th, 2017.

XCloner — Backup and Restore

XCloner — Backup and Restore is a useful open-source plugin with many options for backing up WordPress.

XCloner supports B2 Cloud Storage in their free plugin.

BlogVault describes themselves as a “complete WordPress backup solution.” They offer a free trial of their paid WordPress backup subscription service that features real-time backups of changes to your WordPress site, as well as many other features.

BlogVault has announced their intent to support Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage in a future update.

BackWPup is a popular and free option for backing up WordPress. It supports a number of options for storing your backup, including the cloud, FTP, email, or on your local computer.

WPBackItUp has been around since 2012 and is highly rated. It has both free and paid versions.

VaultPress is part of Automattic’s well-known WordPress product, JetPack. You will need a JetPack subscription plan to use VaultPress. There are different pricing plans with different sets of features.

Backup by Supsystic

Backup by Supsystic supports a number of options for backup destinations, encryption, and scheduling.

BackUpWordPress is an open-source project on Github that has a popular and active following and many positive reviews.

BackupBuddy, from iThemes, is the old-timer of backup plugins, having been around since 2010. iThemes knows a lot about WordPress, as they develop plugins, themes, utilities, and provide training in WordPress.

BackupBuddy’s backup includes all WordPress files, all files in the WordPress Media library, WordPress themes, and plugins. BackupBuddy generates a downloadable zip file of the entire WordPress website. Remote storage destinations also are supported.

WordPress and the Cloud

Grafana 4.0 Stable Release

Grafana v4.0.2 is stable is now available for download. After about 4 weeks of beta fixes and testing
are proud to announce that Grafana v4.0 stable is now released and production ready. This release contains a ton of minor
new features, fixes and improved UX. But on top of the usual new goodies is a core new feature: Alerting!
Read on below for a detailed description of what’s new in Grafana v4!


Alerting is a really revolutionary feature for Grafana. It transforms Grafana from a
visualization tool into a truly mission critical monitoring tool. The alert rules are very easy to
configure using your existing graph panels and threshold levels can be set simply by dragging handles to
the right side of the graph. The rules will continually be evaluated by grafana-server and
notifications will be sent out when the rule conditions are met.

This feature has been worked on for over a year with many iterations and rewrites
just to make sure the foundations are really solid. We are really proud to finally release it!
Since the alerting execution is processed in the backend all data source plugins are not supported.
Right now Graphite, Prometheus, InfluxDB and OpenTSDB are supported. Elasticsearch is being worked
on but will not ready for v4 release.


The rule config allows you to specify a name, how often the rule should be evaluated and a series
of conditions that all need to be true for the alert to fire.

Currently the only condition type that exists is a Query condition that allows you to
specify a query letter, time range and an aggregation function. The letter refers to
a query you already have added in the Metrics tab. The result from the
query and the aggregation function is a single value that is then used in the threshold check.

We plan to add other condition types in the future, like Other Alert, where you can include the state
of another alert in your conditions, and Time Of Day.


Alerting would not be very useful if there was no way to send notifications when rules trigger and change state. You
can setup notifications of different types. We currently have Slack, PagerDuty, Email and Webhook with more in the
pipe that will be added during beta period. The notifications can then be added to your alert rules.
If you have configured an external image store in the grafana.ini config file (s3 and webdav options available)
you can get very rich notifications with an image of the graph and the metric
values all included in the notification.


Alert state changes are recorded in a new annotation store that is built into Grafana. This store
currently only supports storing annotations in Grafana’s own internal database (mysql, postgres or sqlite).
The Grafana annotation storage is currently only used for alert state changes but we hope to add the ability for users
to add graph comments in the form of annotations directly from within Grafana in a future release.

Alert List Panel

This new panel allows you to show alert rules or a history of alert rule state changes. You can filter based on states your
interested in. Very useful panel for overview style dashboards.

Ad-hoc filter variable

This is a new and very different type of template variable. It will allow you to create new key/value filters on the fly.
With autocomplete for both key and values. The filter condition will be automatically applied to all
queries that use that data source. This feature opens up more exploratory dashboards. In the gif animation to the right
you have a dashboard for Elasticsearch log data. It uses one query variable that allow you to quickly change how the data
is grouped, and an interval variable for controlling the granularity of the time buckets. What was missing
was a way to dynamically apply filters to the log query. With the Ad-Hoc Filters variable you can
dynamically add filters to any log property!

UX Improvements

We always try to bring some UX/UI refinements & polish in every release.

TV-mode & Kiosk mode

Grafana is so often used on wall mounted TVs that we figured a clean TV mode would be
really nice. In TV mode the top navbar, row & panel controls will all fade to transparent.

This happens automatically after one minute of user inactivity but can also be toggled manually
with the d v sequence shortcut. Any mouse movement or keyboard action will
restore navbar & controls.

Another feature is the kiosk mode. This can be enabled with d k
shortcut or by adding &kiosk to the URL when you load a dashboard.
In kiosk mode the navbar is completely hidden/removed from view.

New row menu & add panel experience

We spent a lot of time improving the dashboard building experience. Trying to make it both
more efficient and easier for beginners. After many good but not great experiments
with a build mode we eventually decided to just improve the green row menu and
continue work on a build mode for a future release.

The new row menu automatically slides out when you mouse over the edge of the row. You no longer need
to hover over the small green icon and the click it to expand the row menu.

There is some minor improvements to drag and drop behaviour. Now when dragging a panel from one row
to another you will insert the panel and Grafana will automatically make room for it.
When you drag a panel within a row you will simply reorder the panels.

If you look at the animation to the right you can see that you can drag and drop a new panel. This is not
required, you can also just click the panel type and it will be inserted at the end of the row
automatically. Dragging a new panel has an advantage in that you can insert a new panel where ever you want
not just at the end of the row.

We plan to further improve dashboard building in the future with a more rich grid & layout system.

Keyboard shortcuts

Grafana v4 introduces a number of really powerful keyboard shortcuts. You can now focus a panel
by hovering over it with your mouse. With a panel focused you can simple hit e to toggle panel
edit mode, or v to toggle fullscreen mode. p r removes the panel. p s opens share

Some nice navigation shortcuts are:

  • g h for go to home dashboard
  • s s open search with starred pre-selected
  • s t open search in tags list view

Upgrade & Breaking changes

There are no breaking changes. Old dashboards and features should work the same. Grafana-server will automatically upgrade it’s db
schema on restart. It’s advisable to do a backup of Grafana’s database before updating.

If your are using plugins make sure to update your plugins as some might not work perfectly v4.

My thoughts on the future of Gnome-VFS

One of the major construction sites in GNOME and all the other free
desktop environments is the VFS abstraction. Recently, there has been
some discussion about developing a replacement DVFS
as replacement for the venerable Gnome-VFS system. Here are my 5 euro
cent on this issue (Yepp, I am not fully up-to-date on the whole DVFS
discussion, but during my flight from HEL to HAM I wrote this up,
without being necesarily too well informed, lacking an Internet
connection. Hence, if you find that I am an uniformed idiot, you’re of
course welcome to flame me!):

First of all, we have to acknowledge that Gnome-VFS never achieved any major
adoption besides some core (not even all) GNOME applications. The reasons are
many, among them: the API wasn’t all fun, using Gnome-VFS added another
dependency to applications, KDE uses a different abstraction (KIO), and many
others. Adoption was suboptimal, and due to that user experience was
suboptimal, too (to say the least).

One of the basic problems of Gnome-VFS is that it is a (somewhat) redundant
abstraction layer over yet another abstraction layer. Gnome-VFS makes available
an API that offers more or less the same functionality as the (most of the
time) underlying POSIX API. The POSIX API is well accepted, relatively
easy-to-use, portable and very well accepted. The same is not true for
Gnome-VFS. Semantics of the translation between Gnome-VFS and POSIX are not
always that clear. Paths understood by Gnome-VFS (URLs) follow a different
model than those of the Linux kernel. Applications which understand Gnome-VFS
can deal with FTP and HTTP resources, while the majority of the applications
which do not link against Gnome-VFS does not understand it. Integration of
Gnome-VFS-speaking and POSIX-speaking applications is difficult and most of the
time only partially implementable.

So, in short: One one side we have that POSIX API which is a file system
abstraction API. And a (kernel-based) virtual file system behind it. And on the other
side we have the Gnome-VFS API which is also a file system abstraction API and
a virtual file system behind it. Hence, why did we decide to standardize on
Gnome-VFS, and not just on POSIX?

The major reason of course is that until recently accessing FTP,
HTTP and other protocol shares through the POSIX API was not doable
without special kernel patches. However, a while ago the FUSE system
has been merged into the Linux kernel and has been made available for
other operating systems as well, among them FreeBSD and MacOS X. This
allows implementing file system drivers in userspace. Currently there
are all kinds of these FUSE based file systems around, FTP and SSHFS
are only two of them. My very own fusedav tool
implements WebDAV for FUSE.

Another (*the* other?) major problem of the POSIX file system API is
its synchronous design. While that is usually not a problem for local
file systems and for high-speed network file systems such as NFS it
becomes a problem for slow network FSs such as HTTP or FTP. Having the
GUI block for various seconds while an application saves its documents
is certainly not user friendly. But, can this be fixed? Yes, definitely, it can!
Firstly, there already is the POSIX AIO interface — which however is
quite unfriendly to use (one reason is its use of Unix signals for
notification of completed IO operations). Secondly, the (Linux) kernel
people are working on a better asynchronous IO API (see the
syslets/fibrils discussion). Unfortunately it will take a while
before that new API will finally be available in upstream
kernels. However, there’s always the third solution: add an
asynchronous API entirely in userspace. This is doable in a clean (and
glib-ified) fashion: have a couple of worker threads which
(synchronously) execute the various POSIX file system functions and
add a nice, asynchronous API that can start and stop these threads,
feed them operations to execute, and so on.

So, what’s the grand solution I propose for the desktop VFS mess? First, kick
Gnome-VFS entirely and don’t replace it. Instead write a small D-Bus-accessible
daemon that organizes a special directory ~/net/. Populate that
directory with subdirectories for all WebDAV, FTP, NFS and SMB shares that can
be found on the local network using both Avahi-based browsing and native SMB
browsing. Now use the Linux automounting interface on top of that directory and
automount the respective share every time someone wants to access it. For
shares that are not announced via Avahi/Samba, add some D-Bus API (and a nice
UI) for adding arbitrary shares. NFS and CIFS/SMB shares are mounted with the
fast, optimized kernel filesystem implementation; WebDAV and FTP on the other
hand are accessed via userspace FUSE-based file systems. The latter should also
integrate with D-BUS in some way, to query the user nicely for access
credentials and suchlike, with gnome-keyring support and everything.

~/net/ itself can — but probably doesn’t need to — be a FUSE
filesystem itself.

A shared library should be made available that will implement a few
remaining things, that are not available in the POSIX file
system API directly:

  • As mentioned, some nice Glib-ish asynchronous POSIX file system
    API wrapper
  • High-level file system operations such as copying, moving,
    deleting (trash!) which show a nice GUI when they are long-running
  • An API to translate and setup URL <-> filesystem
    mappings, i.e. something that translates
    ftp://test.local/a/certain/path/ to
    ~/net/ftp:test.local/a/certain/path and vice versa. (and
    probably also to a more user-friendly notation, maybe like “FTP Share
    on test.local
    ” or similar). (Needs to communicate with the ~/net/
    handling daemon to setup mappings if required)
  • Meta data extraction. It makes sense to integrate that with
    extended attribute support (EA) in the kernel file system layer, which should be used more often anyway.
  • Explicit mount operations (in contrast to implicit mounts, that
    are done through automounting) (this also needs to communicate with
    the ~/net/ daemon in some way)

Et voilá! Without a lot of new code you get a nice, asynchronous,
modern, well integrated file system, that doesn’t suck. (or at least,
it doesn’t suck as much as other solutions).

Also, this way we can escape the “abstraction trap”. Let’s KDE play
the abstraction game, maybe they’ll grow up eventually and learn that
abstracting abstracted abstraction layers is child’s play.

Yeah, sure, this proposed solution also has a few drawbacks, but be it that way. Here’s a short incomprehensive list:

  • The POSIX file system API sucks for file systems that don’t have “inodes” or that are attached to a specific user sessions. — Yes, sure, but both problems have been overcome by the FUSE project, at least partially.
  • Not that portable — Yes, but FUSE is now available for many systems besides Linux. The automount project is the bigger problem. But all you loose if you would run this proposed system on these (let’s say “legacy”) systems that don’t have FUSE or automounting is access to FTP and WebDAV shares. So what? Local files can still be accessed.
  • Translating between URLs and $HOME/net/ based paths sucks — yepp, it does. But much less than not being able to access FTP/WebDAV shares from some apps but not from others, as we have it right now.
  • Bah, you suck — Yes, I do. On a straw, taking a nip from my caipirinha, right at the moment.

I guess I don’t have to list all the advantages of this solution, do I?

BTW, pumping massive amounts of data through D-Bus sucks anyway.

And no, I am not going to hack on this. Too busy with other stuff.

I’d love to see proper Avahi support in the Nokia N800 (just think of proper
file manager integration of announced WebDAV shares!), but until now Nokia
doesn’t ship Avahi in Maemo. However, there’s now a simple way to install at
least basic Avahi support on the N800. The INdT includes Avahi in their Canola builds. Hence: just install
Canola and your N800 will register itself via mDNS on your network.

In related news: I am happy to see that Avahi has apparently been included in the just announced GNOME Embedded Platform.

Avahify Your Application!

It has never been easier to add Zeroconf service discovery support to your GTK application!

The upcoming Avahi 0.6.18 will ship with a
new library libavahi-ui which contains a GTK UI dialog
AuiServiceDialog, a simple and easy-to-use dialog for
selecting Zeroconf services, similar in style to GtkFileChooserDialog and friends. This dialog should be used whenever there is an IP
server to enter in a GTK GUI. For example:

  • Mail applications such as Evolution may use it to browse for POP3, POP3S, IMAP, IMAPS and SMTP servers.
  • VNC applications may use it to browse for VNC/RFB servers
  • Database clients such as Glom may use it to browse for PostrgreSQL servers
  • FTP clients may use it to browse for FTP servers
  • RSS readers may use it to browse for local RSS feeds

So, how does it look like? Here’s a screenshot of a service dialog browsing for FTP, SFTP and WebDAV shares simultaneously:

The dialog properly supports browsing in remote domains, browsing for
multiple service types at the same time (i.e. POP3 and POP3S) and supports
multi-homed services. It will also resolve the services if requested. Avahi
will ship a (very useful!) example tool zssh.c which
if started from the command line allows you to quickly browse for local SSH

AuiServiceDialog is not perfect yet. It still lacks i18n and a11y
support. In addition it follows the HIG only very roughly. Patches welcome! I
am also very interested in feedback from more experienced GTK programmers,
since my experience with implementing GTK controls is rather limited. This is
my first GTK library which should really feel like a GTK API. So please, read

don’t want to wait for Avahi 0.6.18, just copy avahi-ui.h
and avahi-ui.c into your sources
and make sure to add avahi-client, avahi-glib, gtk+-2.0 to your pkg-config dependencies.

Avahi Support for Apache

The first release of mod_dnssd is now available. It adds DNS-SD based Zeroconf support to Apache 2.0 using Avahi.

This work has been inspired by Sander Temme’s and Sebastien Estienne’s mod_zeroconf module, but supersedes it in every way. MacOSX ships with mod_rendezvous/mod_bonjour, but mod_dnssd is much more powerful than this piece of software as well. In short: mod_dnssd is definitely the greatest way to add Zeroconf support to Apache available today.

A few examples just to show how great mod_dnssd is:

DNSSDEnable On

This is everything you need to enable DNS-SD support in Apache after loading the module. It will publish all virtual hosts and all existing mod_userdir directories (i.e. ~/public_html) as services of type _http._tcp.

In case you want to publish some subdirectory of the web server as service, just place DNSSDServiceName inside a <Location> section for that path:

You can even use it to publish WebDAV shares using Apache’s mod_dav module:

This especially cool since we now have a free software server counterpart for Gnome’s and KDE’s WebDAV client functionality.
