Building a voice interface for generative AI assistants

Generative AI is revolutionizing how businesses interact with their customers through natural conversational interfaces. While organizations can implement AI assistants across various channels, phone calls remain a preferred method for many customers seeking support or information.

We’ll demonstrate how to create a voice interface for your existing Amazon Bedrock generative AI assistant, enabling customers to engage in phone-based conversations with your AI implementation.

Solution overview

Using Workflow Studio for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Step Functions, we built a voice communication interface that connects with the Amazon Nova Micro model in Amazon Bedrock (Figure 1). The demo application uses the base model to enable open-ended questions. Organizations can implement either Amazon Bedrock Agents or Flows to address specific business requirements.

How it works:

  1. Inbound call arrives
  2. System plays welcome message
  3. System asks caller for questions
  4. Voice recording starts, stopping when silence is detected
  5. Parallel flows begin:
    • First flow
      1. Plays some music while the caller is on-hold
    • Second flow
      1. Transcribes the recording using Amazon Transcribe
      2. Sends transcribed question to the Amazon Nova Micro model in Amazon Bedrock
      3. Upon receiving the response, stops the on-hold music
  6. Text-to-speech plays the model’s answer
  7. System asks for additional questions and loops to Step 4 or ends the call

 Expanded capabilities and optimizations

These are potential improvements, additional functionalities, and advanced features that can enhance the demo application:

  • The transcription component is interchangeable with any speech-to-text generative AI model (including Whisper Large V3 Turbo on Amazon Bedrock Marketplace)
  • The PSTN audio service RecordAudio Action can be tuned to adjust silence duration and background noise levels
  • Enabling the PSTN audio service VoiceFocus feature to improve call clarity by reducing background noise and enhancing voice quality
  • PSTN audio service Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) media applications can also handle calls through SIP trunking by using Amazon Chime SDK Voice Connector, streamlining integration with existing phone systems
  • The UpdateSipMediaApplicationCall API is a PSTN audio service feature that lets you regain call control and apply new actions during active calls
  • Parallel workflow states allow user-friendly handling of API service calls by playing music during processing
  • PSTN audio service provides pay-per-minute rates with serverless, scalable telephony infrastructure

Deploying the solution

 The following steps allow you to deploy the voice communication interface workflow (Figure 1) together with the supporting serverless architecture for Step Functions and PSTN audio service integration. In a previous blog, we demonstrated how combining Step Functions and Amazon Chime SDK PSTN audio service streamlines the development of reliable telephony applications through a visual workflow design.

 Prerequisites:

  1. AWS Management Console access
  2. Node.js and npm installed
  3. AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) installed and configured
  4. Enable access to the Amazon Nova Micro model through the Amazon Bedrock console

 Walkthrough:

The AWS Cloud Development Kit (AWS CDK) project on the AWS GitHub repository will deploy the following resources:

  • phoneNumberBedrock – Provisioned phone number for the demo application
  • sipMediaApp – SIP media application that routes calls to lambdaProcessPSTNAudioServiceCalls
  • sipRule – SIP rule that directs calls from phoneNumberBedrock to sipMediaApp
  • lambdaProcessPSTNAudioServiceCallsAWS Lambda function for call processing
  • roleLambdaProcessPSTNAudioServiceCalls – AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Role for lambdaProcessPSTNAudioServiceCalls
  • stepfunctionBedrockWorkflow – Step Functions workflow for the telephony application

Follow these steps to deploy the CDK stack:

  1. Clone the repository.

Conclusion

We demonstrated how organizations can add voice capabilities to their existing generative AI implementations using Amazon Bedrock. The solution enables customers to interact with AI assistants through traditional phone calls, expanding accessibility and user engagement. The demo application showcases an architecture combining AWS Step Functions and Amazon Chime SDK PSTN audio service, delivering natural voice conversations with AI models through quick deployment using visual workflows.

Enable single-sign-on for Amazon WorkMail with IAM Identity Center and Okta Universal Directory

Securing your business email is more critical than ever in today’s digital workplace. To help you protect your users and data in Amazon WorkMail (WorkMail), we regularly introduce security features that give organizations more control and protection for their business email. Thanks to the recently announced integration between WorkMail and AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Identity Center (IAM IdC), WorkMail users can now enjoy single sign-on (SSO) via compatible 3rd party external identity providers including Okta Universal Directory (Okta), Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, JumpCloud, OneLogin, Ping Identity products and Active Directory.

This blog post explains the specific steps needed to integrate WorkMail with Okta via IAM IdC. WorkMail customers who use other 3rd party identity providers that are compatible with IdC will also find this post useful alongside the AWS documentation for their specific identity source. Alternatively, WorkMail organization administrators who do not use an external identity provider, but wish to enable multi-factor-authentication (MFA) for WorkMail viaIAM IdC will find guidance in a different blog post.

By integrating WorkMail with Okta via IAM IdC, users benefit from the security, convenience, and familiarity of SSO when accessing their WorkMail inbox and calendars via the WorkMail web-app. WorkMail organization administrators benefit from the security and efficiency of managing WorkMail user additions, modifications, or removals via the Okta admin tools. More detailed information about this integration can be found in the IAM IdC documentation as well as in the WorkMail documentation.

Introduction

Email remains a critical business communication tool, yet it is also one of the most targeted entry points for cyber threats. A single compromised email account can expose sensitive business data, damage an organization’s reputation, and serve as a gateway for further cyber attacks. As traditional username and password authentication becomes increasingly inadequate, organizations must adopt stronger access controls to protect their users and communications.

You can enhance your WorkMail organization’s security and simplify user authentication with SSO and a familiar login experience by integrating WorkMail with IAM IdC and Okta. This (and similar) integrations provide a more seamless authentication experience and helps administrators enforce consistent security policies across their organization.
The integration between WorkMail, IAM IdC and Okta supports these industry standards:

WorkMail authentication options

When you first set up WorkMail, you use the built-in user directory which relies upon standard username | password authentication for the WorkMail web browser client as well as popular desktop and mobile email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird.

The integration between IAM Identity Center and Okta uses the SCIM protocol to provision and map user attributes in Okta to named attributes in IAM IdC. Once enabled, user and group information from Okta is automatically synchronized with IAM IdC. IAM IdC in turn uses the SAML protocol to provide Okta users with a familiar and convenient SSO experience.

After integrating IAM IdC with Okta, WorkMail uses:

  1. Okta SSO for users of the WorkMail web-app.
  2. Personal access tokens (PAT) for users of desktop &/or mobile email applications.

Prerequisites for the WorkMail, IAM IdC and Okta integration

  • Admin access to an AWS account
    • You can evaluate the integration in this post for a limited period of time using an AWS Free Tier Account
  • Admin access to an Amazon WorkMail Organization
    • The integration uses the email domain that is configured as WorkMail’s default
  • Admin access to Amazon IAM Identity Center
    • Or admin access to the IdC organization account
  • Your WorkMail and IAM Identity Center must be in the same AWS region
  • IAM Role with the security credentials needed to deploy AWS infrastructure via the AWS CDK
  • Administrator access to a fully functional Okta Identity account populated with users and (optionally) group(s) that you want to integrate and synchronize with IAM IdC and WorkMail.
  • Access to the AWS Samples GitHub repository, where you’ll find sample code that deploys via AWS CDK. This code sample deploys a customizable AWS Lambda initially configured to perform user synchronization between IAM IdC and WorkMail every 15 minutes.
  • A source code editor such as Visual Studio Code with your AWS admin credentials.

High-level Steps

  1. Configure Identity Center (See our documentation for detailed information).
  2. Configure Okta Identity integration with IAM Identity Center. See this post for more information
  3. Provision and synchronize Okta’s Groups (or Okta Users) with IAM Identity Center
  4. Configure WorkMail to use Identity Center
  5. Deploy the AWS CDK sample project found in aws-samples in GitHub
  6. Test user access to WorkMail with and without Okta SSO (web-app) and Personal Access Token (desktop & mobile email clients)
  7. Notify WorkMail users of upcoming changes to login procedures.
  8. Switch WorkMail Authentication Mode to IAM IdC.

Detailed Configuration Guidance

The instructions that follow walk you through the steps needed to integrate your Okta system with IAM IdC. Once IAM IdC is synchronizing with Okta, you’ll integrate IAM IdC with WorkMail. This process will keep your WorkMail organization’s users and groups synchronized with Okta. Once fully enabled, your WorkMail users will use their Otka SSO credentials to access the WorkMail web-client or a username and unique Personal Access Tokens to access desktop &/or mobile email clients. Let’s get started!

Configure Okta integration with IAM Identity Center (these steps have been adapted from this blog post)

    1. Open the Okta admin landing page in a new browser (tab).

    2. Click on Applications in the dropdown menu.
    3. Click Browse App Catalog.

    1. Type AWS IAM Identity Center in the search box.
    2. Click on the app that matches AWS IAM Identity Center.

    1. Click Add Integration to initiate the integration process.

    1. Type a memorable name (like Workshop AWS IAM Identity Center) for the application label, and click Done.

    1. Click on the Sign On tab, scroll down to view SAML Signing Certificates.

    1. Click Actions to download the certificate to your local machine. Keep the Okta Admin dashboard Open, you will need the SAML information found here to configure IdC in the next section.

  1. In a new browser window (or tab), open the IAM IdC console in the same region as your WorkMail Organization (we’re using us-east-1).
  2. If this is your first time accessing IAM IdC, you’ll be greeted with the IdC console home page prompting you to “Enable IAM Identity Center”. Click Enable.

  1. Check that you are in the correct region, click Enable (note – this will enable an Organization instance of IdC, which is recommended. If you want to use an Account instance of IdC, please see the documentation).

  1. Once IdC has been enabled, scroll down to the IAM Identity Center setup section and click Confirm Identity Source.

  1. Click Actions, and select Change identity source from dropdown menu.

  1. Upload the SAML certificate you downloaded from Okta (above, step xx)
  2. Open the Okta dashboard browser/tab. Under the SAML 2.0 configuration, scroll down and expand > More details.
    • Copy the Sign on URL from Okta SAML and paste the URL into the IdP sign-in URL field in IdC.
    • Copy the Issuer URL from Okta SAML and paste the URL into the IdP sign-in URL field in IdC.
    • Click Next.
  1. Type ACCEPT in the confirmation text box & click Change identity source.

  1. Switch back to the IAM IdC console browser window/tab. On the Settings page, locate the Automatic provisioning information box, and then choose Enable. Leave this browser window/tab open as you’ll need it to copy the values for the SCIM endpoint and Access token into Okta shortly (note – IdC Automatic provisioning uses SCIM protocol to provision users from Okta).

  1. Return to the Okta admin dashboard (you should have left it open in another browser window or tab). Under IAM Identity Center applications, select the Workshop AWS IAM Identity Center and open the Provisioning tab.
  2. Under Integration, click Configure API Integration.

  1. Select the checkbox next to Enable API integration to enable provisioning.
  2. Refer to the IAM IcC console browser window/tab you left open and copy (from IdC) and paste (into Okta) the values for:
    • Base URL field – paste the IdC SCIM endpoint value (make sure there is no trailing forward slash at the end of the URL).
    • API Token field, enter the Access token value.
    • Import Groups should be checked
  1. Click Test API Credentials to verify the credentials entered are valid (the message AWS IAM Identity Center was verified successfully! should appear).

  1. Save.
  2. Under Settings, choose To App, click Edit and select Enable for Create Users, Update User Attributes and Deactivate Users. Click Save.

  1. In the Okta admin dashboard’s left-hand menu pane, click on Directory.
    • Choose Groups to see the list of existing groups.
    • Click on the Add Group button to create a new group called workmail_users.
    • Fill in the required details for the new group, including:
      • Group Name: Enter workmail_users for the group.
      • Group Description (optional): Provide a description for the group’s purpose (WorkMail_users).
    • Save the New Group
    • Reload the page to see the newly created group
    • Click Assign people
    • Add Okta users to the workmail_users group
    • Click Save
  1. In the Okta admin dashboard’s left-hand menu pane, click on Applications and open the AWS IAM Identity Center application.
  2. Click the Assignments tab, choose Assign, then choose Assign to people.
  3. Choose the Okta users that you want to have access to WorkMail via IAM Identity Center app.
  4. For each user, click Assign, review the user info, and click Save then Go Back
  5. When all Okta users for whom you want WorkMail users created/synced have been assigned, click Done to start the process of provisioning the users into IAM Identity Center.

  1. On the Assignments page, choose Assign, and then choose Assign to groups.
  2. Click the Okta group (workmail_users) that you want to have access to WorkMail via IAM Identity Center.
  3. Click Assign, review the selections, click Save and Go Back. Click Done. This starts the process of provisioning the users in the workmail_users group into IAM Identity Center.
  4. Choose the Push Groups tab.
  5. Choose the workmail_users group that contains all the users that you assigned to the IAM Identity Center app.
  6. If the group is not found in the list, choose the Find groups by name option by clicking (+)Push Groups Menu.
  7. Enter the group name ( workmail_users) that you created in the previous step and select it from the search results
  8. Click Save. The group status changes to “pushing” then “Active” (this can take several minutes), once the Okta workmail_users group and all its members have been pushed to IAM Identity Center.
  9. Return to the browser window/tab with the IAM Identity Center console.
  10. In the left navigation, select Groups (or Users) (you should see the Group (or users) list that was just populated by the Okta “push” action).

Enable IAM Identity Center in Amazon WorkMail

  1. Open a new browser window (tab) to the WorkMail console in the same region as IdC, and open your WorkMail Organization.
  2. In WorkMail’s left navigation rail click Identity Center
  3. Click on Multi-factor authentication setup guide, Click Enable Identity Center, read the default configuration notice ,and click Enable

  1. Under Identity Center Settings, click the Authentication mode tab and ensure it is set for WorkMail directory and Identity center (this is the default).
  2. This mode is needed for testing and to allow desktop & mobile email client users to retrieve their unique personal access tokens.
  3. Once the integration with IdC is successfully tested, and those WorkMail users who rely on desktop or mobile email clients for access have had the opportunity to login to the WorkMail web app to retrieve a PAT, you will change the Authentication mode to Identity center only.

Deploy the sample solution from GitHub

Solution prerequisites:

– AWS Account
– AWS IAM user with Administrator permissions
Python (> v3.x) and Pip fully installed and configured on your computer
AWS CLI (v2) installed and configured on your computer
AWS CDK (v2) installed and configured on your computer
Sample CDK project that creates and deploys an AWS Lambda in your AWS account to perform users synchronization between IAM IdC and WorkMail.

The instructions that follow guide you in deploying a sample solution for the AWS Samples Serverless-Mail repository that programmatically creates/syncs WorkMail users from IAM Identity Center using the AWS CDK CLI. The sample uses naming conventions used in this blog. For example, the Lambda only syncs those users found in the IdC Group named "workmail_users". If your IdC group has a different name, or you want to sync multiple IdC groups with WorkMail, you will need to modify the sample code before proceeding. (BE AWARE: The sample code base is an Open Source starter project designed to provide a demonstration and a base to start from for specific use cases. It should not be considered fully Production-ready, nor should it be deployed in a production environment. Refer to the README.md and License.md for more information.)

  1. Clone the sample project to your computer (git clone https://github.com/aws-samples/serverless-mail/tree/main/idc_okta-workmail). CD into the ‘idc_okta-workmail‘ directory.
  2. Create a virtual environment for packaging in Python (Docker must already be running locally) with python3 -m venv .venv
  3. Activate the virtual environment with source .venv/bin/activate
  4. Make sure cdk.json references the correct path to Python (by default cdk.json refers to .venv/bin/python app.py). If you need to locate Python, run the which python command.
  5. Install the project dependencies with pip3 install -r requirements.txt
  6. Check the AWS CLI local credentials and region with aws sts get-caller-identity . If you need to change any parameter, run aws configure
  7. Prepare the `app.py` file by running python3 get-my-variables.py  . The ‘get-my-variables.py’ script fetches the necessary variables from your AWS account and create the `app.py` file needed by the CDK. You may want to review the auto-generated `app.py` file for accuracy, especially if the AWS account has been used for other IdC or WorkMail related projects. The app.py file requires the following account variables:
    • AWS accountId
    • AWS Region – the region must be the same for IdC and WorkMail.
    • IDENTITYSTORE_ID – – found in the Identity Center console under settings or via the AWS CLI aws identitystore list-groups --identity-store-id {identity_store_id}
    • IDENTITY_CENTER_INSTANCE_ARN – found in the Identity Center console under settings or via the AWS CLI aws sso-admin list-instances
    • IDENTITY_CENTER_APPLICATION_ARN – found in the Identity Center console under Applications or via the AWS CLI aws sso-admin list-applications --instance-arn {instance_arn}`
    • WORKMAIL_ORGANIZATION_ID – found in the WorkMail console under Organizations or via the AWS CLI aws workmail list-organizations
    • OKTA_GROUP_ID_TO_ASSIGN_TO_WORKMAIL – found in the Identity Center console under Groups > General Information or via the AWS CLI aws identitystore list-groups --identity-store-id {identity_store_id}
  8. Bootstrap the package (this step may take several minutes to complete) with cdk bootstrap
  9. Synthesize the package (this step may take several minutes to complete) with cdk synthesize
  10. Deploy your package (this step may take several minutes to complete) with cdk deploy and follow the prompts in the AWS CDK CLI.
  11. Once deployment to your AWS account starts, you can view the deployment status in the CloudFormation console.

Confirm WorkMail Authentication mode

WorkMail’s default Authentication mode should be set to WorkMail directory and Identity center. Don’t change this yet. This mode will allow WorkMail web-app users to continue to login to the WorkMail client directly, without Okta SSO. WorkMail’s Personal access token configuration default is set to active, and token lifespan set to 365 days. You can change this if your security needs differ from the default. PATs are used by desktop and mobile email clients to login to WorkMail. Leaving WorkMail’s default Authentication mode set to WorkMail directory allows desktop and mobile email clients to continue to login to the WorkMail with their username and password, without yet requiring a PAT instead of password.

Conduct a few spot tests to verify WorkMail web-app users can properly access their WorkMail accounts via:

  1. The Amazon WorkMail web application URL (found on the WorkMail organization page)

  1. Your organization’s unique AWS access portal URL (found on the setting page of the IAM IdC dashboard).

  1. This will open a new browser tab that redirects to the Okta user login page.

  1. Once user has authenticated, this page will redirect to the AWS access portal with linked application tiles to all of the AWS applications that have been integrated with IAM Identity Center.

  1. Click on the WorkMail logo, and the WorkMail web-app will load.

  1. Desktop or mobile email software users need to create a WorkMail Personal Access Token (PAT) to access WorkMail. These users must retrieve their own PATs after logging into the WorkMail web-client. Open the Webmail login link found on the WorkMail Organization page under User Login

    1. click the settings gear (in top right)
    2. Click Personal Access token and enter a token name (i.e. desktop-thunderbird-pat)
    3. Click Create token.
    4. Click Create token.
    5. Copy the token value (this is the only time you can retrieve this token value).
  2. Open your desktop or mobile email software, enter your username and your PAT (the PAT replaces your existing user password).

  1. In settings, click Personal Access token and Create token
  2. Enter a token name (typically the device on which you’ll use this PAT) and select create token.
  3. Copy the token value (this is the only time you can retrieve this token value).
  4. Open your desktop or mobile email software, enter your username and your PAT (the PAT replaces your existing user password), and test your new login (username | PAT).

Notify your WorkMail users of upcoming changes to login procedures

Once you have tested the integration between WorkMail and IAM Identity Center with a few test users, you should prepare your WorkMail users for the increased login security. For example, you could send them an email that explains:

  • The organization is adding an additional login security step to help protect their inboxes.
  • Inform them that they should anticipate an email from the AWS IAM Identity Center with info about the upcoming implementation of MFA for web-app users and PATs for desktop and mobile client users.
  • Users should accept the invitation and create a new password for the AWS IAM Identity Center.
  • Inform them that once WorkMail MFA is enabled, all WorkMail web-app users will be required to use their username, password and MFA.
  • Inform them that once WorkMail PATs are enabled, all WorkMail desktop and mobile email client users will need to login to the WorkMail web client (with MFA) via the AWS access portal URL, create one PAT per software client (the same PAT can not be used on desktop and mobile). They then must update their desktop or mobile email software to use their username and PAT, instead of their current password. Explain that the PAT is now their email client application password and their personal desktop or mobile email software passwords will no longer work.
  • Provide users with a way to request support.

  1. Once you are satisfied that your WorkMail users have incorporated Okta SSO and/or PATs into their WorkMail login routines, the WorkMail administrator should disable the WorkMail directory Authentication mode found in the WorkMail console under Organization > Identity Center.

  1. Optional – Ask several trusted users to test their ability to login to WorkMail web app via Okta credentials.

Congratulations, your WorkMail organization’s authentication is now being managed by IAM Identity Center and your external identity provider, Okta.

Conclusion

By integrating IAM Identity Center with Okta Identity and WorkMail, you can provide your users with the convenience of Okta SSO for the WorkMail web-app. This allows your organization to improve it’s email security posture, better safeguard sensitive communications and protect you WorkMail organization against unauthorized access. Visually build telephony applications with AWS Step Functions

Developers face numerous challenges when building telephony applications: managing unpredictable user responses, handling disconnections, processing incorrect inputs, and addressing errors. These challenges extend development cycles and create unstable applications that fail to meet user expectations.

This blog demonstrates how Amazon Web Services (AWS) Step Functions, combined with Amazon Chime SDK Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) audio service, offers a solution to overcome these challenges.

Overview of the solution

To demonstrate our solution, we built a sample telephony application that lets business owners manage customer calls through a dedicated business phone number. This solution helps small business owners separate personal and business communications, while managing all calls from their existing phone.

The beta version of this sample application delivers these six core call flows:

  1. During business hours: Routes incoming customer calls to the business owner
  2. After hours: Enables customers to leave voice messages
  3. Message retrieval: Allows owner to access customer voice messages
  4. Business caller ID: Enables owner to call customers using the business number
  5. Call scheduling: Permits owner to schedule customer calls for later in the day
  6. Automated calling: Initiates scheduled calls between owner and customer automatically

Using Workflow Studio, we built a Step Functions workflow (Figure 1) that processes all six call flows and handles unexpected scenarios.

How it works

AWS Step Functions enable agile visual workflow design, through pre-built components and error handling rules. This creates workflows composed of event-driven states that input, process, and output JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)-formatted messages. The PSTN audio service streamlines telephony applications through its serverless approach using a request/response programming model. It invokes AWS Lambda functions with Events and waits for Actions responses, both in predefined JSON formats. This shared JSON format enables seamless integration between the PSTN audio service and Step Functions, leading us to design a serverless architecture (Figure 2) that allows for bidirectional JSON message exchange between the two services.

Main components:

  • eventRouter: Lambda function managing JSON message exchange
  • appWorkflow: Step Functions implementing call flow logic
  • actionsQueue: Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS) queue storing response actions

Architecture flow:

  1. PSTN audio service receives inbound call
  2. Service sends NEW_INBOUND_CALL event to eventRouter
  3. eventRouter creates the actionsQueue
  4. eventRouter asynchronously executes appWorkflow with event data
  5. eventRouter begins long-polling from actionsQueue, waiting for next action(s) message
  6. appWorkflow processes JSON-formatted event data, computing next action(s)
  7. appWorkflow queues next action(s) using Amazon SQS SendMessage API with Wait for Callback with Task Token integration pattern to stop the workflow until the next event call is received
  8. eventRouter retrieves and removes action(s) from actionsQueue
  9. eventRouter returns action(s) to PSTN audio service

Observations:

  • eventRouter code logic is generic and agnostic from the calls and different Step Function workflows
  • eventRouter queries an environment variable to determine the workflow to call
  • Pairs of actionsQueue and appWorkflow instances lives for the duration of each call
  • eventRouter is responsible for the creation and deletion of each actionsQueue
  • appWorkflow instances are created by the eventRouter at the start of each call
  • appWorkflow instances complete its execution when all parties involved on the call hang up

Building your telephony application

Prerequisites:

Implementation Guidelines:

  • Create dedicated Step Functions workflows for each telephony application
  • Design and implement workflows using Workflow Studio
  • Use a Standard workflow type to accommodate extended call durations
  • Update the eventRouter Lambda function’s “CallFlowsDIDMap” environment variable to map phone numbers to their workflow Amazon Resource Name (ARN)
  • Set workflow variables in the “Init” state Variables tab (Figure 3). The eventRouter function automatically sets “QueueUrl”, and adding other variables here removes the need for external storage

  • Configure Choice state rules to route calls based on conditions. Rules one through three (Figure 4) handle call routing based on inbound/outbound direction, owner/customer identification, while the default rule manages unexpected scenarios.

  • Configure the SQS: SendMessage state (Figure 5) to instruct the next action to the PSTN audio service by:
    • Formatting the message content to match supported actions for the PSTN audio service
    • Setting TransactionAttributes to pass back and forth the values of the “WaitToken” and “QueueUrl” throughout the call duration
    • Enabling the Wait for Callback with a Task Token integration pattern

  • Leverage AWS service integration states to interact with other AWS services directly from the workflow.
    • Example: Use a DynamoDB PutItem state (Figure 6) to store Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) recording files, including bucket name and key, in Amazon DynamoDB.

  • Utilize JSONata expressions (Figure 7) to minimize the number of Lambda functions.
    • Example: For Amazon EventBridge scheduling, compute time expressions using JSONata functions [$fromMillis(), $millis(), number()] and string concatenation to handle customer call scheduling.

  • Use Step Functions error handling with success and fail states (Figure 8) to manage error paths and call termination results.

Deploying the solution

 The following steps allows you to deploy the sample telephony application together with the serverless architecture (Figure 2).

 Prerequisites:

  1. AWS Management Console access
  2. Node.js and npm installed
  3. AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) installed and configured

 Walkthrough:

The Cloud Development Kit (CDK) project on the AWS GitHub repository will deploy the following resources:

  • phoneNumberBusiness – Provisioned phone number for the sample application
  • sipMediaApp – SIP media application that routes calls to lambdaProcessPSTNAudioServiceCalls
  • sipRule – SIP rule that directs calls from phoneNumberBusiness to sipMediaApp.
  • stepfunctionBusinessProxyWorkflow – Step Functions workflow for the sample application
  • roleStepfuntionBusinessProxyWorkflowIAM Role for stepfunctionBusinessProxyWorkflow
  • lambdaProcessPSTNAudioServiceCalls – Lambda function for call processing

Follow these steps to deploy the CDK stack:

Call the provisioned phone number to test the sample application. Optionally, edit the workflow to update the business name and working hours on the “Init” Task state, in the Variables tab.

Conclusion

This blog demonstrates how combining AWS Step Functions and Amazon Chime SDK PSTN audio service streamlines the development of reliable telephony applications through visual workflow design and managed error handling. We provided a sample application, implementing six core business phone features, showcasing how the solution effectively manages multiple conditional paths and edge cases like disconnections and invalid inputs.

The serverless architecture created enables seamless integration between the two services through JSON-based communication, while providing automatic scaling and pay-per-use pricing. Together, these components create a robust foundation for building sophisticated telephony applications that reduce maintenance costs and enhance reliability.

Improving Security in Amazon WorkMail with MFA

Securing your business email is more critical than ever in today’s digital workplace. To help you protect your users and data in Amazon WorkMail, we have introduced enhanced security features that give organizations more control and protection for their communication platforms. With the integration of AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Identity Center, WorkMail now offers robust multi-factor authentication and personal access token capabilities that can help prevent unauthorized access to user accounts and protect sensitive business communications. In this post, we’ll explore how these new security features can strengthen your organization’s email security strategy

Introduction

Email remains a critical business communication channel, yet it’s also one of the most targeted by cybercriminals. When you’re managing an organization’s communications, a single compromised account can lead to significant financial losses, damage your reputation, and serve as a gateway for additional cyber attacks. Traditional username and password protection is no longer adequate against growing cyber threats.

With Amazon WorkMail, you now have powerful tools to enhance your email security. Our support for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Personal Access Token (PAT) capabilities provides administrators with essential additional security layers to prevent unauthorized account access.

This blog demonstrates WorkMail’s integration with the IAM Identity Center’s default identity store to enable these advanced security features. If you’re using third-party identity providers like Microsoft Entra ID or Okta Universal Directory, you’ll find dedicated integration guides in our documentation.

High-level Overview

Amazon WorkMail’s default authentication is established via a unique username & password:

  1. Users of the WorkMail web-app sign in using their username and password.
  2. Users who access WorkMail from a desktop &/or mobile email application sign in using their username and password.WorkMail standard login

After you integrate WorkMail with IAM Identity Center, Amazon WorkMail can be configured with enhanced authentication that requires:

  1. Users of the WorkMail web-app will log-in via their unique AWS Access Portal using username, password and a MFA token. Upon successful log-in, they select and are redirected into the WorkMail web-app.
  2. Users who access WorkMail from a desktop &/or mobile email app continue to sign in to WorkMail using their username, however they must use a personal access token (PAT) instead of their WorkMail password.

Prerequisites

  1. Administrator access to an AWS account
    1. You can evaluate the integration in this post for a limited period of time using an AWS Free Tier Account (link = https://aws.amazon.com/free )
  2. Administrator access to an Amazon WorkMail Organization
    1. Your WorkMail organization should have at least 3 or more users for testing
  3. Administrator access to Amazon IAM Identity Center
  4. Your WorkMail and IAM Identity Center must be in the same AWS region

High-level Configuration Steps

  1. Configure Identity Center (see our documentation for detailed information).
  2. Configure WorkMail to use Identity Center (see our documentation for detailed information).
  3. Assign IAM Identity Center users/groups to WorkMail organization
    1. Associate Amazon WorkMail users with IAM Identity Center users (this step is not necessary if your IdC and WorkMail user names are exactly the same, see our documentation for details)
  4. Check Authentication mode (see documentation) & Personal access token configuration (see documentation).
    1. Allow both WorkMail Directory (no MFA/PAT) and Identity Center (requires MFA & PAT) modes for testing.
  5. Test your users’ access to WorkMail with MFA & PAT
  6. Notify your WorkMail users of upcoming changes to login procedures.
  7. Switch WorkMail Authentication Mode to Identity Center only.
    1. When your users are ready for MFA and PAT, switch authentication mode to require MFA and desktop and mobile email clients to use PAT.
  8. Review additional WorkMail security guidance in AWS blogs and documentation to ensure you are up to date with the latest security guidance.

Detailed Configuration Guidance

Configure AWS IAM Identity Center

    1. Open the IdC console in the same AWS region as your WorkMail organization.
      1. If this is your first time accessing IAM Identity Center, you’ll be greeted with the IdC console home page and “Enable IAM Identity Center”. Click the **`Enable`** button.
      2. Enable IAM Identity Center
      3. Unless you have a reason to use an account instance of IdC, choose Enable.
      4. Org instance of IdC
      5. In a new browser window, open the WorkMail console in the same AWS region as the IdC you created above.
      6. Arrange the IdC console browser next to the WorkMail console browser window so you can easily copy/paste between the two services.
      7. Sync IdC and WorkMail users
      8. In the IdC console’s left navigation rail, choose users and click add user.
        1. Create several IdC user accounts with the same usernames and email addresses as your WorkMail users.
          1. Using identical usernames in Amazon WorkMail and IAM Identity Center simplifies user synchronization and reduces authentication errors during integration. This alignment streamlines troubleshooting and user lifecycle management while ensuring consistent access control across both services.)
        2. Make sure the “Send an email to this user with password setup instructions.” is selected.
          1. The user will receive an email with a link to set up a password and instructions to connect to the AWS access portal. The link will be valid for up to 7 days. You can grant this user permissions to accounts or applications (such as WorkMail) when they sign in to the AWS access portal.

      9. In IdC’s left navigation rail, choose groups and create a new group called “workmail_users”.

  1. Configure WorkMail to use Identity Center
    1. In the WorkMail console’s left navigation rail, click the link for Identity Center.
    2. Click the down arrow for Multi-factor authentication setup guide
    3. Click Step 1 – Enable identity center and click Enable.

  2. Assign IAM Identity Center users/groups to WorkMail organization

    2. Click Step 2 – Add and Assign users and click Next

      2. Type workmail_users and select it from the drop-down list.

        1. You will get a message “Successfully assigned group workmail_users. Please continue with step 3 by associating users within this group with WorkMail users.”
  3. Authentication mode & Personal access token configuration
    1. The default Authentication mode is set to WorkMail directory and Identity center. Don’t change this yet.
      1. This will allow WorkMail web-app users to continue to login to the WorkMail client directly, without MFA.
    2. The Personal access token configuration default is set to active, and token lifespan set to 365 days. PATs are used by desktop and mobile email clients to login to WorkMail.
      1. This will allow desktop and mobile email clients to continue to login to the WorkMail with their username and password, without a PAT.
  4. Test WorkMail logins to verify a few users can properly access their WorkMail accounts via both the WorkMail web-app and your organization’s unique AWS access portal URL.
    1. Open the Amazon WorkMail web application and login as one of your test users.
      1. You should have an email invitation to join AWS IAM Identity Center.
      2. Accept the invitation.
      3. Create a IdC password.
      4. Use your username and the new password to login to IdC.
      5. Register an MFA device
      6. enable-mfa
      7. Click Next
      8. You’ll be redirected to the AWS access portal.
        1. Enter your user name and password
        2. Provide your MFA token
      9. Click the tile for Amazon WorkMail to login to the WorkMail web-app
    2. Desktop or mobile email software users need to create PATs to access WorkMail (once the WorkMail administrator disables the WorkMail directory Authentication mode and logins are via the Identity center AWS access portal URL only). Note – PATs are retrieved by individual users from within the WorkMail web-client after logging in via the AWS access portal URL (with MFA).
      1. Open the AWS access portal URL and login
        1. You can find the URL from the Identity Center console > Settings > AWS access portal URL
      2. Login via your username password
      3. Register an MFA device
      4. You’ll be redirected to the AWS access portal.
        1. Enter your user name and password
        2. Provide your MFA token
      5. Click the tile for Amazon WorkMail to login to the WorkMail web-app
      6. In the web-app, click the settings (gear in top right) icon
      7. get-PAT
        1. In settings, click Personal access token and Create token
        2. Enter a token name (typically the device on which you’ll use this PAT) and select create token.
        3. Copy the token value (this is the only time you can retrieve this token value).
        4. Open your desktop or mobile email software, enter your username and your PAT (the PAT replaces your existing user password).
        5. update-email-app-with-pat
  5. Notify your WorkMail users of upcoming changes to login procedures
    1. Once you have tested the integration between Amazon WorkMail and IAM Identity Center with a few test users, you should prepare your WorkMail users for the increased login security. For example, you could send them an email that explains:
      1. The organization is adding an additional login security step to help protect their inboxes.
      2. Inform them that they should anticipate an email from the AWS IAM Identity Center with info about the upcoming implementation of MFA for web-app users and PATs for desktop and mobile client users.
      3. Users should accept the invitation and create a new password for the AWS IAM Identity Center.
      4. Inform them that once WorkMail MFA is enabled, all WorkMail web-app users will be required to use their username, password and MFA.
      5. Inform them that once WorkMail PATs are enabled, all WorkMail desktop and mobile email client users will need to login to the WorkMail web client (with MFA) via the AWS access portal URL, create one PAT per software client (the same PAT can not be used on desktop and mobile). They then must update their desktop or mobile email software to use their username and PAT, instead of their current password. Explain that the PAT is now their email client application password and their personal desktop or mobile email software passwords will no longer work.
      6. Provide users with a way to request support.
  6. Switch WorkMail Authentication Mode to Identity Center only
    1. Once you are satisfied that your WorkMail users have incorporated MFA and/or PATs into their WorkMail login routines, the WorkMail administrator should disable the WorkMail directory Authentication mode found in the WorkMail console under Organization > Identity Center.

Amazon SES celebrates 14 years of email sending and deliverability

On this day, 14 years ago, we launched Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES), a highly scalable email sending service that allow businesses and developers to reliably and cost-effectively deliver email from the cloud without having to manage the underlying infrastructure and other operational complexities.

Fast forward to 2025: Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) processes over a trillion email each year for customers worldwide across various industries, from small startups to large enterprises for their transactional and marketing email workloads, including the emails for Amazon retail’s Prime Day events. Today, we take the celebration of SES’s 14th birthday to introduce some of the recently launched features and enhancements to SES features.

Email is a critical communication channel for businesses. With email marketing potentially delivering a $42 ROI for every dollar spent, businesses are eager to send and ensure their emails land in the inbox (called as deliverability). However, Email Service Providers (ESPs) have become more vigilant, implementing advanced filters to block unwanted or suspicious messages. ESPs now require long-standing best practices and bulk-sender requirements that all email senders must adhere to in order to achieve good deliverability and reputation with mailbox providers. Our reputation management systems analyze millions of data points daily (such as IPs, domains, bounces, complaints, and delivery notifications) to help your emails reach their intended inboxes.

SES started as a simple email sending service and as the years passed (since 2011), we became increasingly passionate about email and our vision grew more exciting and innovative. Today, we are not only sending emails; we expanded into email relay and infrastructure features like Mail Manager, we added a secure, managed business email and calendar solution (Amazon WorkMail) to the SES portfolio and released features that help you analyze, monitor and optimize your email deliverability such as Virtual Deliverability Manager (VDM), and introduced Managed Dedicated IP (M-DIP) to help manage and improve your sender reputation. We’ll explore each of these features in more detail later in the post. Industry leaders like Spamhaus recognize SES’s four pillar framework of Prevention, Monitoring, Analysis and Response efforts and effectiveness in maintaining high email deliverability and reputation standards. Ensuring Email Resilience & Reliability with Global Endpoints:
An email that is not delivered or an email that is delivered late could be a lost opportunity. Therefore, ensuring your email messages keep flowing is important. Global Endpoints (launched in Dec 2024) is a feature for resilient sending through two commercial AWS Regions. Global Endpoints allows customers to choose a primary and secondary region which accommodate email sending workloads in an equal split under normal circumstances. If either region suffers an impairment, traffic shifts away from the affected Region towards the other, ensuring that email sending continues.

Unlike manual multi-region setups, Global Endpoints synchronizes critical parameters between your two chosen Regions, and highlights remaining differences you must resolve. Once active, the load-balanced sending ensures both Regions have warmed-up IP addresses ready for your workloads, and no manual effort is required to respond to outages.

Modernizing Email Infrastructure with Amazon SES Mail Manager:
Mail Manager (launched in May 2024) is a set of Amazon SES email relay and gateway features designed to help you with governance, risk management, and compliance goals around all your corporate email workloads. At its core, Mail Manager acts as a routing and delivery relay, effectively managing email traffic and ensuring compliance. It’s like having a digital traffic controller for your emails, efficiently processing rules while seamlessly integrating with your existing email infrastructure whether they are self-hosted or already at AWS. Mail Manager permits standard inspection and enforcement of routing, tracking, archiving, security and compliance rules whether messages are incoming, outgoing, or internal-to-internal. Mail Manager allows simple, cost-effective, and usage-based monitoring and enforcement of corporate policies while creating an easy migration path for application modernization and the wind-down of shadow IT mail servers throughout your organization.

Recently, we announced full lifecycle logging, which means customers have the ability to configure end to end logging for ingress endpoints and rules engine actions to various destinations such as CloudWatch, S3, and Firehose. Organizations can also deliver emails to Q Business for indexing and queries and get a complete visibility into their email communications, enhancing transparency and security. With Mail Manager, you can also setup email journaling, prevent attacks such as email echo spoofing and modernize your email sending by connecting with advanced security solutions like Proofpoint.

Engagement, Deliverability and Maximizing Email Success with Virtual Deliverability Manager (VDM):
Email deliverability is a complex and multifaceted challenge. Businesses need tools to monitor and optimize their email delivery success rates to make every email count. Virtual Deliverability Manager (VDM) (launched in Sep 2022), is an Amazon SES feature that helps you enhance email deliverability, like increasing inbox deliverability and email conversions, by providing insights into your sending and delivery data, and giving advice on how to fix the issues that are negatively affecting your delivery success rate and reputation. Recently, we enhanced VDM with an adaptive setup, added complaint rate and delivery improvement recommendations.

VDM tracks every email’s journey, uncovering opportunities to improve delivery and engagement rates. Customers can dig deep into deliverability metrics such as bounce, complaint, open, click-through, and successful delivery rates in their accounts at multiple levels such as by sending email address, by email provider, or by SES configuration set. This makes it easy to quickly check the status and trend of sending health.

VDM also analyzes sending configurations and provides automatic recommendations about how to increase sending success. This helps customers make changes such as DKIM configuration (Domain Keys Identified Mail) to increase the likelihood of successful delivery.

Advanced features like BIMI gap detection ensure your emails aren’t just sent, but strategically positioned for maximum impact. The automated complaint rate insights act as an early warning system, helping businesses proactively protect their sender reputation.

Reputation Management with Dedicated IPs (managed):

When customers sign up for Amazon SES, their email sending is automatically handled through shared IP addresses. While this shared IP approach is cost-effective and safe, it also means customers don’t have full control over their own sending reputation. The reputation of the IP they send from is determined by the quality and engagement levels of all emails sent from that IP. Some organizations can achieve exceptionally high reputation, and have turned to leasing dedicated IP addresses, where they are the sole sender on that IP. This helps them grow and maintain a positive sending reputation, building trust with ISPs and mailbox providers. Customers estimate how many dedicated IPs they need and request them before use. Dedicated IPs also require a careful “warm-up” process, where senders gradually increase their email volume to avoid triggering spam filters.

Dedicated IPs (Managed) makes it easier to manage dedicated IPs, by automating process of provisioning, leasing, warming up, and managing dedicated IP addresses. Customers can create a managed dedicated IP pool through the API, CLI, or Console and start using it for dedicated sending without having to open support cases. The IP pool automatically scales in and out based on usage, taking into account the specific policies of each ISP. SES tracks the warmup level for each IP in the pool individually for each ISP, ensuring a gradual ramp-up of email volume. The warmup percentage calculation adapts to actual sending patterns, optimizing the warmup schedule. Excess sending is deferred and retried, with early-stage traffic leveraging the shared IP infrastructure.

By automating the management of dedicated IPs, Dedicated IPs (Managed) helps SES customers focus on their email content and strategy, while AWS handles the underlying infrastructure and reputation management. This allows senders to improve their deliverability and ensure more of their emails reach the intended inboxes.

Elevating the Email Experience:
Understanding the evolving needs of our customers, we’ve released a number of new features to make email sending more seamless, secure, and transparent. SES now offers inline email templates that allow developers to seamlessly provide template content directly within their API requests, eliminating the process of managing template resources. We’ve also enhanced tracking capabilities with HTTPS support for custom domains and introduced options to set maximum deliverability times for time-sensitive messages. Our AutoTag enhancements now include insights into TLS version for outgoing messages and customers now have the ability to set custom values in feedback headers, providing better transparency and control. In addition to these improvements, we’ve also expanded Amazon SES to 24 regions, including AWS Govcloud (US-East).

Quickly go from Idea to PR with CodeCatalyst using Amazon Q

Amazon Q feature development enables teams using Amazon CodeCatalyst to scale with AI to assist developers in completing everyday software development tasks. Developers can now go from an idea in an issue to a fully tested, merge-ready, running application code in a Pull Request (PR) with natural language inputs in a few clicks. Developers can also provide feedback to Amazon Q directly on the published pull request and ask it to generate a new revision. If the code change falls short of expectations, a new development environment can be created directly from the pull request, necessary adjustments can be made manually, a new revision published, and proceed with the merge upon approval.

In this blog, we will walk through a use case leveraging the Modern three-tier web application blueprint, and adding a feature to the web application. We’ll leverage Amazon Q feature development to quickly go from Idea to PR. We also suggest following the steps outlined below in this blog in your own application so you can gain a better understanding of how you can use this feature in your daily work.

Solution Overview

Amazon Q feature development is integrated into CodeCatalyst. Figure 1 details how users can assign Amazon Q an issue. When assigning the issue, users answer a few preliminary questions and Amazon Q outputs the proposed approach, where users can either approve or provide additional feedback to Amazon Q. Once approved, Amazon Q will generate a PR where users can review, revise, and merge the PR into the repository.

Prerequisites

Although we will walk through a sample use case in this blog using a Blueprint from CodeCatalyst, after, we encourage you to try this with your own application so you can gain hands-on experience with utilizing this feature. If you are using CodeCatalyst for the first time, you’ll need:

Walkthrough

Step 1: Creating the blueprint

In this blog, we’ll leverage the Modern three-tier web application blueprint to walk through a sample use case. This blueprint creates a Mythical Mysfits three-tier web application with modular presentation, application, and data layers.

First, within your space click “Create Project” and select the Modern three-tier web application CodeCatalyst Blueprint as shown above in Figure 2.

Enter a Project name and select: Lambda for the Compute Platform and Amplify Hosting for Frontend Hosting Options. Additionally, ensure your AWS account is selected along with creating a new IAM Role.

Once the project is finished creating, the application will deploy via a CodeCatalyst workflow, assuming the AWS account and IAM role were setup correctly. The deployed application will be similar to the Mythical Mysfits website.

Step 2: Create a new issue

The Product Manager (PM) has asked us to add a feature to the newly created application, which entails creating the ability to add new mythical creatures. The PM has provided a detailed description to get started.

In the Issues section of our new project, click Create Issue

For the Issue title, enter “Ability to add a new mythical creature” and for the Description enter “Users should be able to add a new mythical creature to the website. There should be a new Add button on the UI, when prompted should allow the user to fill in Name, Age, Description, Good/Evil, Lawful/Chaotic, Species, Profile Image URI and thumbnail Image URI for the new creature. When the user clicks save, the application should leverage the existing API in app.py to save the new creature to the DynamoDB table.”

Furthermore, click Assign to Amazon Q as shown below in Figure 3.

Lastly, enable the Require Amazon Q to stop after each step and await review of its work. In this use case, we do not anticipate having any changes to our workflow files to support this new feature so we will leave the Allow Amazon Q to modify workflow files disabled as shown below in Figure 4. Click Create Issue and Amazon Q will get started.

Step 3: Review Amazon Qs Approach

After a few minutes, Amazon Q will generate its understanding of the project in the Background section as well as an Approach to make the changes for the issue you created as show in Figure 5 below

(**Note: The Background and Approach generated for you may be different than what is shown in Figure 5 below).

We have the option to proceed as is or can reply to the Approach via a Comment to provide feedback so Amazon Q can refine it to align better with the use case.

In the approach, we notice Amazon Q is suggesting it will create a new method to create and save the new item to the table, but we already have an existing method. We decide to leave feedback as show in Figure 6 letting Amazon Q know the existing method should be leveraged.

Amazon Q will now refine the approach based on the feedback provided. The refined approach generated by Amazon Q meets our requirements, including unit tests, so we decide to click Proceed as shown in Figure 7 below.

Now, Amazon Q will generate the code for implementation & create a PR with code changes that can be reviewed.

Step 4: Review the PR

Within our project, under Code on the left panel click on Pull requests. You should see the new PR created by Amazon Q.

The PR description contains the approach that Amazon Q took to generate the code. This is helpful to reviewers who want to gain a high-level understanding of the changes included in the PR before diving into the details. You will also be able to review all changes made to the code as shown below in Figure 8.

Step 5 (Optional): Provide feedback on PR

After reviewing the changes in the PR, I leave comments on a few items that can be improved. Notably, all fields on the new input form for creating a new creature should be required. After I complete leaving comments, I hit the Create Revision button. Amazon Q will take my comments, update the code accordingly and create a new revision of the PR as shown in Figure 9 below.

After reviewing the latest revision created by Amazon Q, I am happy with the changes and proceed with testing the changes directly from CodeCatalyst by utilizing Dev Environments. Once I have completed testing of the new feature and everything works as expected, we will let our peers review the PR to provide feedback and approve the pull request.

As part of following the steps in this blog post, if you upgraded your Space to Standard or Enterprise tier, please ensure you downgrade to the Free tier to avoid any unwanted additional charges. Additionally, delete the project and any associated resources deployed in the walkthrough.

Unassign Amazon Q from any issues no longer being worked on. If Amazon Q has finished its work on an issue or could not find a solution, make sure to unassign Amazon Q to avoid reaching the maximum quota for generative AI features. Best Practices for using Amazon Q Feature Development

You can follow a few best practices to ensure you experience the best results when using Amazon Q feature development:

  1. When describing your feature or issue, provide as much context as possible to get the best result from Amazon Q. Being too vague or unclear may not produce ideal results for your use case.
  2. Changes and new features should be as focused as possible. You will likely not experience the best results when making large and complex changes in a single issue. Instead, break the changes or feature up into smaller, more manageable issues where you will see better results.
  3. Leverage the feedback feature to practice giving input on approaches Amazon Q takes to ensure it gets to a similar outcome as highlighted in the blog.

An introduction to Amazon WorkMail Audit Logging

Amazon WorkMail’s new audit logging capability equips email system administrators with powerful visibility into mailbox activities and system events across their organization. As announced in our recent “What’s New” post, this feature enables the comprehensive capture and delivery of critical email data, empowering administrators to monitor, analyze, and maintain compliance.

With audit logging, WorkMail records a wide range of events, including metadata about messages sent, received, and failed login attempts, and configuration changes. Administrators have the option to deliver these audit logs to their preferred AWS services, such as Amazon Simple Storage System (S3) for long-term storage, Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose for real-time data streaming, or Amazon CloudWatch Logs for centralized log management. Additionally, standard CloudWatch metrics on audit logs provide deep insights into the usage and health of WorkMail mailboxes within the organization.

By leveraging Amazon WorkMail’s audit logging capabilities, enterprises have the ability to strengthen their security posture, fulfill regulatory requirements, and gain critical visibility into the email activities that underpin their daily operations. This post will explore the technical details and practical use cases of this powerful new feature.

In this blog, you will learn how to configure your WorkMail organization to send email audit logs to Amazon CloudWatch Logs, Amazon S3, and Amazon Data Firehose . We’ll also provide examples that show how to monitor access to your Amazon WorkMail Organization’s mailboxes by querying the logs via CloudWatch Log Insights.

Email security

Imagine you are the email administrator for a biotech company, and you’ve received a report about spam complaints coming from your company’s email system. When you investigate, you learn these complaints point to unauthorized emails originating from several of your company’s mailboxes. One or more of your company’s email accounts may have been compromised by a hacker. You’ll need to determine the specific mailboxes involved, understand who has access to those mailboxes, and how the mailboxes have been accessed. This will be useful in identifying mailboxes with multiple failed logins or unfamiliar IP access, which can indicate unauthorized attempts or hacking. To identify the cause of the security breach, you require access to detailed audit logs and familiar tools to analyze extensive log data and locate the root of your issues.

Amazon WorkMail Audit Logging

Amazon WorkMail is a secure, managed business email service that hosts millions of mailboxes globally. WorkMail features robust audit logging capabilities, equipping IT administrators and security experts with in-depth analysis of mailbox usage patterns. Audit logging provides detailed insights into user activities within WorkMail. Organizations can detect potential security vulnerabilities by utilizing audit logs. These logs document user logins, access permissions, and other critical activities. WorkMail audit logging facilitates compliance with various regulatory requirements, providing a clear audit trail of data privacy and security. WorkMail’s audit logs are crucial for maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, and reliability of your organization’s email system.

Understanding WorkMail Audit Logging

Amazon WorkMail’s audit logging feature provides you with the data you need to have a thorough understanding of your email mailbox activities. By sending detailed logs to Amazon CloudWatch Logs, Amazon S3, and Amazon Data Firehose, administrators can identify mailbox access issues, track access by IP addresses, and review mailbox data movements or deletions using familiar tools. It is also possible to configure multiple destinations for each log to meet the needs of a variety of use cases, including compliance archiving.

WorkMail offers four audit logs:

  • ACCESS CONTROL LOGS – These logs record evaluations of access control rules, noting whether access to the endpoint was granted or denied in accordance with the configured rules;
  • AUTHENTICATION LOGS – These logs capture details of login activities, chronicling both successful and failed authentication attempts;
  • AVAILABILITY PROVIDER LOGS – These logs document the use of the Availability Providers feature, tracking its operational status and interactions feature;
  • MAILBOX ACCESS LOGS – Logs in this category record each attempt to access mailboxes within the WorkMail Organization, providing a detailed account of credential and protocol access patterns.

Once audit logging is enabled, alerts can be configured to warn of authentication or access anomalies that surpass predetermined thresholds. JSON formatting allows for advanced processing and analysis of audit logs by third party tools. Audit logging stores all interactions with the exception of web mail client authentication metrics.

Below are two examples that show how WorkMail’s audit logging can be used to investigate unauthorized login attempts, and diagnose a misconfigured email client. In both examples, we’ll use WorkMail’s Mailbox Access Control Logs and query the mailbox access control logs in CloudWatch Log Insights.

In our first example, we’re looking for unsuccessful login attempts in a target timeframe. In CloudWatch Log Insights we run this query:

fields user, source_ip, protocol, auth_successful, auth_failed_reason | filter auth_successful = 0

CloudWatch Log Insights returns all records in the timeframe, providing auth_succesful = 0 (false) and auth_failed_reason = Invalid username or password. We also see the source_ip, which we may decide to block in a WorkMail access control rule, or any other network security system.

In this next example, consider a WorkMail organization that has elected to block the IMAP protocol using a WorkMail access control rule (below):

Because some email clients use IMAP by default, occasionally new users in this example organization are denied access to email due to an incorrectly configured email client. Using WorkMail’s mailbox access control logs in CloudWatch Log Insights we run this query:

fields user_id, source_ip, protocol, rule_id, access_granted | filter access_granted = 0

And we see the user’s attempt to access their email inbox via IMAP has been denied by the access control rule_id (below):

Conclusion

Amazon WorkMail’s audit logging feature offers comprehensive view of your organization’s email activities. Four different logs provide visibility into access controls, authentication attempts, interactions with external systems, and mailbox activities. It provides flexible log delivery through native integration with AWS services and tools. Enabling WorkMail’s audit logging capabilities helps administrators meet compliance requirements and enhances the overall security and reliability of their email system.

How To Build an Email Service on SES

Foundations

Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) handles hundreds of billions of email messages every month. While many are outbound, one of the fastest-growing parts of the business is for inbound traffic. Customers send and receive email via SES using a combination of public SMTP interfaces and the SES SDK. Traditionally, most customers used SES alongside their existing corporate mail systems, but did you know it’s possible to build a complete email service with SES at its core? In fact, it’s already been done – it’s known as Amazon WorkMail, and it provides mailbox and calendar services to tens of thousands of customers (and millions of mailboxes) around the world.

Ingredients for Success

Email transport depends on a few core components. First of all, you have to be a reputable sender, or the receiving email systems are going to reject anything you try to send. You also have to be insulated against spurious reports of abuse, so that one bad apple can’t take down the entire service for everyone. The solution for both of those issues is the same: have an enormous number of public Mail Transfer Agents (MTAs), and manage their IP reputations actively. If someone reports spam coming from one of those IPs, and it gets added to a block list somewhere on the internet, you have to have a rapid response mechanism to engage with the block list operator and take their prescribed steps to clean up the entry.

The Highest Standards of Security

Similarly, you have to consult those same block lists when mail is sent to your own systems from anywhere on the internet. Inbound email is subjected to a variety of authentication steps before it’s released for delivery to a destination. Quality providers will leverage checks called SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (Domain Keys Identified Mail). SPF is designed to prevent malicious senders from masquerading as other domains, and DKIM enables a receiving system to validate the authenticity of the sender and to confirm it hasn’t been manipulated while in transit. If either of these checks fail, a receiving system may take action ranging from dropping the message entirely, to flagging it as suspicious but still delivering it to the user’s inbox. A third security control, DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) takes SPF and DKIM outputs and generates a series of instructions for receiving mailbox providers about what to do with questionable mail. Any serious provider will support these mechanisms and provide visibility into their actual performance on your email.

Amazon WorkMail’s Interface with SES

Once you’ve got clean email and reputable senders or recipients, you have to be able to figure out where to deliver the message itself. SES Inbound has a specific internal action when used with WorkMail, where the message is routed to WorkMail’s own infrastructure for matching against a known user’s inbox and performing the indexing and storage operations necessary to make it show up in your desktop, web, or mobile mail client. There are a number of options which may take place while that message is in transit, however, and the SES framework supports those with its flexible routing options. For example, a very popular choice is for customers to trigger a transport rule powered by AWS Lambda for inbound and/or outbound messages. Some of these are simple – they append a standard banner to the message if it is inbound from an external source, for example – but there is really no limit to what programmatic steps can be taken. You could submit message content to a large language model (LLM) for training or inspection. You could examine its use of language with AWS Bedrock to train a foundational model in generative AI about how to write emails itself. WorkMail and SES support and encourage these kind of big ideas for working with your message content.

Managing Spikes and Growth

Another critical advantage SES provides is the ability to absorb huge spikes in inbound traffic, and to sustain very large permitted volumes of outbound traffic as well. Email’s underlying standards and protocols offer administrators some degree of control over delays in transit, by implementing retry intervals to buffer messages if they can’t be delivered immediately. The classic on-premise enterprise use case, however, still runs the risk of overwhelming the capacity of the (single) mail server, either due to a malicious action by a sender or a huge increase in usage over a very short period of time. SES absorbs those spikes automatically and has orders of magnitude more capacity than any typical on-premise deployment, meaning that your mail enjoys multiple tiers of buffering only when required, and with no introduced latency if buffering is unnecessary.

Putting it All Together

So how does it all work together? The inbound use case is our main focus. When a message arrives via SMTP, SES first interrogates a back-end directory to confirm that the message is destined for an SES customer. If so, it looks up how the customer’s domain is configured, or if it is a WorkMail customer domain. From there the message passes through the SES message scanner, where its content is evaluated for spam or malware, and a scoring indicator is added to the message headers. That score may result in the message being dropped altogether, or it may result in the message ultimately being delivered to a Junk Mail folder in a WorkMail mailbox. Once scored, the message is either stored in the customer’s S3 storage, or delivered to WorkMail for further processing, such as being put in a specific folder, or redirected to another recipient. Once it’s stored somewhere, the customer can interact with it either using SES APIs, or via standard mail clients interacting with a WorkMail mailbox. In practice a mailbox is a structured object format also within S3, but without raw S3 access because the storage is managed as a system resource within WorkMail instead of being owned by an end customer.

The Customer Experience

When a WorkMail customer wants to send a message, they compose it in a mail client and then click ‘Send’ to send it via SMTP. In the outbound case WorkMail relays the message to SES internet-facing mail relays, which in turn look up the recipient domain information for details on how to route it. SES mail relays also perform the necessary security and authentication checks to ensure that the message is sent by a valid user (either SES native or WorkMail) and that the content is cryptographically signed so a receiving system can verify it hasn’t been manipulated in transit, using the DKIM mechanism described previously. When those steps are complete, the message is handed off to the next mail relay on the internet, and SES has no further role in its future unless a receiving system flags it as abusive. In that case the feedback is delivered to SES automatically and a series of containment actions are considered based on the nature and history of abuse reports. Thus the feedback loop to IP reputation is maintained even in the case of a rogue actor sending bad mail.

Robust Tooling Makes Email Look Easy

The bottom line is that SES enables these flows, and a customer wanting to build a comprehensive mail system could do so themselves if they didn’t want to use WorkMail or another existing email service provider. We’ve seen a tremendous range of creative solution-building from customers when they combine SES inbound and outbound mail, a subset of WorkMail mailboxes and their own rules and organization policies, the use of AWS Lambdas, and inline email security gateways. The flexibility to build whatever you need, without being tied to a single product vendor, is what makes SES so popular with its customers, and ensures that WorkMail – as a turnkey mail service – works so reliably for those customers who just need their mail and calendar to work.

New AWS AppFabric Improves Application Observability for SaaS Applications

In today’s business landscape, companies strive to equip their employees with the most suitable and efficient tools to perform their jobs effectively. To achieve this goal, many companies turn to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications. This approach allows companies to optimize their workflows, enhance employee productivity, and focus their resources on core business activities rather than software development and maintenance.

As the use of SaaS applications expands, there’s an increasing need for solutions that can proactively identify and address potential security threats to maintain uninterrupted business operations. Security teams spend time monitoring application usage data for threats or suspicious behavior, and they’re responsible for maintaining security oversight to meet regulatory and compliance requirements.

Unfortunately, integrating SaaS applications with existing security tools requires many teams to build, manage, and maintain point-to-point (P2P) integrations. These P2P integrations are needed so security teams can monitor event logs to understand user or system activity from each application.

Introducing AWS AppFabric
Today, we’re launching AWS AppFabric, a fully managed service that aggregates and normalizes security data across SaaS applications to improve observability and help reduce operational effort and cost with no integration work necessary.

With AppFabric, you can easily integrate leading SaaS applications without building and managing custom code or point-to-point integrations. For more information on what’s supported, refer to Supported Applications for AppFabric.

When the SaaS applications are authorized and connected, AppFabric ingests the data and normalizes disparate security data such as user activity logs; this is accomplished using the Open Cybersecurity Schema Framework (OCSF), an industry standard schema and open-source project co-founded by AWS. This delivers an extensible framework for developing schemas and a vendor-agnostic core security schema.

The data is then enriched with a user identifier, such as a corporate email address. This reduces security incident response time because you gain full visibility to user information for each incident. You can ingest normalized and enriched data to your preferred security tools, which allows you to set common policies, standardize security alerts, and easily manage user access across multiple applications.

Getting Started with AWS AppFabric
To get started with AppFabric, you need to create an App bundle, a one-time process. This stores all AppFabric app authorizations and ingestions, including the encryption key used. When you create an app bundle, AppFabric creates the required AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role in your AWS account, which is required to send metrics to Amazon CloudWatch and to access AWS resources such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose.

Creating an App Bundle
First, I select Getting started from the home page or left navigation panel from within the AWS Management Console.

Following the step-by-step instructions to set up AppFabric, I select Create app bundle.

In the Encryption section, I use AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) to define an encryption key to securely protect my data in all unauthorized applications. The KMS key encrypts my data within my internal data stores used as my ingestion destinations; for this example, my destination is Amazon S3. My key options include AWS owned and Customer managed. Select Customer managed if you want to use a key you have inside KMS.

Authorizing Applications
Once I have created the app bundle, the next step is Create app authorization. On this page, I can select the supported SaaS application that I want to connect to my app bundle.

Then, I need to enter my application credentials so that AppFabric can connect; one of the advantages of using AppFabric is that it connects directly into SaaS applications without the need for me to write any code.

I can set up multiple app authorizations by repeating this step, as required, for each application. The credentials required for authorization vary by app; see the AppFabric documentation for details.

Setting up Audit Log Ingestions
Now I have created an app authorization in my app bundle. I can proceed with Set up audit log ingestions. This step ingests and normalizes audit logs and delivers them to one or more destinations within AWS, including Amazon S3 or Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose.

Under Select app authorizations, I select the authorized app that I created in the previous step. Here, I can choose more than one authorized application that allows me to consolidate data from various SaaS applications into a single destination. Then, I can select a destination for the audit logs of the selected apps. If I selected multiple app authorizations, the destination is applied to each authorized app. Currently, AppFabric supports the following destinations:

  • Amazon S3 – New Bucket
  • Amazon S3 – Existing Bucket
  • Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose

When I select a destination, additional fields appear. For example, if I select Amazon S3 – New Bucket, I need to fill the details for my Amazon S3 bucket and the optional prefix.

After that, I need to define Schema & Format of the ingested audit log data for my selected applications. Here, I have three options:

  • OCSF – JSON
  • OCSF – Parquet
  • Raw – JSON


AppFabric normalizes the audit log data to the OCSF schema and formats the audit log data into JSON or Parquet format. For OCSF – JSON and OCSF – Parquet options, AppFabric automatically maps the fields and enriches the field with user email as an identifier. As for the Raw – JSON data format, AppFabric simply provides the audit log data in its original JSON form.

To see a detailed view of my ingestion status, on the Ingestions page, I select my existing ingestion.

Here, I see the ingestion status is Enabled and the status for my Amazon S3 bucket is Active.

After my ingestion runs for around 10 minutes, I can see AppFabric stored the audit data logs in my Amazon S3 bucket.

When I open the file, I can see all the audit data logs from the SaaS application.

With audit data logs now in Amazon S3, I can also use AWS services to analyze and extract insights from the log data. For example, from data in Amazon S3, I can use AWS Glue and run a query using Amazon Athena. The following screenshot shows how I run a query for all activities in the audit data logs.

User Access
AWS AppFabric also has a feature called User access to allow security and IT admin teams to quickly see who has access to which applications. Using an employee’s corporate email address, AppFabric searches all authorized applications in the app bundle to return a list of apps that the user has access to. This helps to identify unauthorized user access and accelerate user deprovisioning.

Things to Know
Availability — AWS AppFabric is generally available today in US East (N. Virginia), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo), with availability in additional AWS Regions coming soon.

AWS AppFabric generative AI capabilities – Available in a future release, AWS AppFabric will empower you to automatically perform tasks across applications using generative AI. Powered by Amazon Bedrock, this AI assistant generates answers to natural language queries, automates task management, and surfaces insights across SaaS applications.

Integrations with SaaS applications — AppFabric connects SaaS applications including Asana, Atlassian Jira suite, Dropbox, Miro, Okta, Slack, Smartsheet, Webex by Cisco, Zendesk, and Zoom. Refer to Supported applications for more details.

Integration with Security Tools — Audit data log from AppFabric is compatible with security tools, such as Logz.io, Netskope, NetWitness, Rapid7, and Splunk, or a customer’s proprietary security solution.
