The US Is Spying on the UN Secretary General

The Washington Post is reporting that the US is spying on the UN Secretary General.

The reports on Guterres appear to contain the secretary general’s personal conversations with aides regarding diplomatic encounters. They indicate that the United States relied on spying powers granted under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to gather the intercepts.

Lots of details about different conversations in the article, which are based on classified documents leaked on Discord by Jack Teixeira.

There will probably a lot of faux outrage at this, but spying on foreign leaders is a perfectly legitimate use of the NSA’s capabilities and authorities. (If the NSA didn’t spy on the UN Secretary General, we should fire it and replace it with a more competent NSA.) It’s the bulk surveillance of whole populations that should outrage us.

Redacting Documents with a Black Sharpie Doesn’t Work

We have learned this lesson again:

As part of the FTC v. Microsoft hearing, Sony supplied a document from PlayStation chief Jim Ryan that includes redacted details on the margins Sony shares with publishers, its Call of Duty revenues, and even the cost of developing some of its games.

It looks like someone redacted the documents with a black Sharpie ­ but when you scan them in, it’s easy to see some of the redactions. Oops.

I don’t particularly care about the redacted information, but it’s there in the article.

How to verify an email address in SES which does not have an inbox

Overview of solution

Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is an email platform that provides a straightforward and cost-effective solution for sending and receiving emails using your own email addresses and domains.

One of the most common use cases for using separate verified from email address is in online retails/e-commerce platforms. Online/e-commerce platform need to send emails to their customers where the from address should look like “[email protected]. In these cases, the From addresses like [email protected] does not have inbox setup for receiving emails. Using the following solution, you can avoid setting up an inbox for the email identity while still verifying the email address for sending and receiving.

In order to send emails from SES using email/domain identity, we need to have the From email identity or domain verified in Amazon SES in a supported region. When verifying a domain,you have the option to use Easy DKIM or Bring Your Own DKIM(BYOD). For verifying an email address, you need to create an identity in Amazon SES for the respective region. Once the required email address identity is created, you will receive a verification link in your inbox. To successfully verify the email address, simply open the link in your browser. In this case, you would need to have inbox setup for email address to receive the verification link from [email protected].

Verifying a domain in Amazon SES allows you to send emails from any identity associated with that domain. For example, if you create and verify a domain identity called example.com, you don’t need to create separate subdomain identities for a.example.com, a.b.example.com, nor separate email address identities for [email protected], [email protected], and so on. Therefore, the settings for the domain remain the same for all From addresses and you cannot separate you sending activity. You can use this solution to verify the From address without setting up an inbox and differentiate sending activity and tracking based on settings. The benefits of having different email settings from the domain are mentioned below.

Benefits of verifying the email separately for the same domain:

1) When you verify the email along with your domain, you can keep the settings different for the two Identities. You can setup different Configuration sets, notifications and dedicated IP pools for the verified email. This separation enables you to manage domain and email settings independently.
2) You can have two separate emails for sending transaction ([email protected]) and Marketing emails ([email protected]). After assigning different configuration sets, you can monitor the bounces and complaints separately for the sender. A best practice here would be separating the Transactional and Marketing in sub domains. Having both types in the same domain can adversely affect the reputation for your domain, and reduce deliverability of your transactional emails.
3) Using different dedicated IP pools, you can separate the sending IPs for Marketing and transaction or any other emails. Thus, your IP reputation for one use case is not affected by any other emails.

Prerequisite

1) An active AWS account.
2) Administrative Access to the Amazon SES Console and Amazon Simple Storage Service(S3) console.
3) A verified identity (Domain) with an MX record for the domain pointing to a Receiving Endpoint in one of the following region in Amazon SES.

Solution walkthrough

In order to verify the email in SES, we need to verify the link send from Amazon SES in the email inbox. We will setup receiving rule set and add S3 bucket with required permissions to store emails from Amazon SES in S3 bucket. After receiving the email in S3 bucket, download the email to get the verification link. Open the verification link in a browser to complete the process.

Step 1 : How to setup SES Email Receiving Ruleset for S3 bucket

1) Open the Amazon SES console.
2) In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose Email Receiving.

3) To create a new rule set, choose Create a Rule Set, enter a rule set name, and then choose Create a Rule Set.
Note: If you create a new rule set, select the rule set, and then choose Set as Active Rule Set. Only one of your receipt rule sets can be the active rule set at any given time.


4) Choose Active Rule Set and Choose Create Rule.

5) Enter a unique rule name. If your use case requires TLS or spam and virus scanning, then choose Require TLS or Enable spam and virus scanning. To make this an active rule, select the Enabled checkbox. Choose Next.

6) To receive emails for specific verified domain, click Add new recipient condition and enter the domain/email address. You can leave it blank and it will store for all the verified domain addresses with receiving setup.

7) Choose Add new action, and then choose Deliver to S3 bucket

9) Enter a unique S3 bucket name and click on ‘Create Bucket’
Note: S3 Bucket policy will be added automatically.

(Optional) Choose Message encryption for Amazon SES to use an Amazon Key Management Server (Amazon KMS) key to encrypt your emails.
(Optional) For SNS topic, select an Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) topic to notify you when Amazon SES delivers an email to the S3 bucket.

10) Click Next and Create Rule.

Step 2: Verifying email address in Amazon SES using S3

The following procedure shows you how to verify Email address in Amazon SES.
1) Open the Amazon SES console.
2) In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose Verified identities.
3) Choose Create identity.

4) Under Identity details, choose Email address as the identity type you want to create.
5) For Email address, enter the email address that you want to use. The email address must be an address that’s able to receive mail and that you have access to.
(Optional) If you want to Assign a default configuration set, select the check box.
6) To create your email address identity, choose Create identity. After it’s created, you should receive a verification email within five minutes from [email protected].

7) Open the Amazon S3 console.

8) Open the S3 Bucket that you configured to store the Amazon SES emails. Verify that the bucket contains the test email that you sent. It can take a few minutes for the test email to appear.

9) Select the email/object received in S3 bucket. Click Download.
Download the received email/object

10) Open the Downloaded file in Notepad and copy the verification link under the Subject. Paste the link in your Browser and confirm it.

11) Once the link is confirmed, you can check in SES console and confirm under verified identities that your email address is in verified Status.

Cleaning up:

You should have successfully verified email address in Amazon SES using S3 bucket. To avoid incurring any extra charges, remember to delete any resources created manually if you no longer need them for monitoring.

Steps for removing the resources:

1) Delete all the created/verified Identities.
2) Delete data regarding Amazon SES receiving Rules.
3) Delete data regarding Amazon S3 bucket.

Conclusion:

In this blog post, we explained the benefits of verifying a separate email address for the verified domain without setting up an inbox. Having separate identities for different use cases helps in efficient management of bounces, complaints, and delivery. You can setup different IP pools using configuration set for different use cases.

Stalkerware Vendor Hacked

The stalkerware company LetMeSpy has been hacked:

TechCrunch reviewed the leaked data, which included years of victims’ call logs and text messages dating back to 2013.

The database we reviewed contained current records on at least 13,000 compromised devices, though some of the devices shared little to no data with LetMeSpy. (LetMeSpy claims to delete data after two months of account inactivity.)

The database also contained over 13,400 location data points for several thousand victims. Most of the location data points are centered over population hotspots, suggesting the majority of victims are located in the United States, India and Western Africa.

The data also contained the spyware’s master database, including information about 26,000 customers who used the spyware for free and the email addresses of customers who bought paying subscriptions.

The leaked data contains no identifying information, which means people whose data was leaked can’t be notified. (This is actually much more complicated than it might seem, because alerting the victims often means alerting the stalker—which can put the victims into unsafe situations.)

Recently, the manager of the Harvard Med School morgue was accused of stealing and selling human body parts. Cedric Lodge and his wife Denise were among a half-dozen people arrested for some pretty grotesque crimes. This part is also at least a little bit funny though:

Over a three-year period, Taylor appeared to pay Denise Lodge more than $37,000 for human remains. One payment, for $1,000 included the memo “head number 7.” Another, for $200, read “braiiiiiins.”

It’s so easy to think that you won’t get caught.

How to Manage SMS Opt-Outs with Amazon Pinpoint

Managing SMS can be challenging due to the continued increase in global regulation. One of the common functions that needs to exist for you to be in compliance is to be able to opt out your customers from receiving your communication when they request. Amazon Pinpoint has the ability to automatically opt your customers out of SMS communications using predefined keywords such as, “stop” or “unsubscribe” when responding back to the number from which they do not want to receive communications. This is great in many cases because it does not require any extra configuration for you to remain in compliance with SMS regulations but if you are sending communications across multiple use cases this is not ideal. In this blog post we will explain how to manage SMS sending for multiple use cases while still remaining in compliance with SMS regulations.

The default setup for Pinpoint SMS includes an Opt-Out List whose standard functionality is to block opted-out numbers from all SMS communications from the entire account. With the standard configuration, your only option to remove an endpoint from the default Opt-Out List is to use the DeleteOptedOutNumber action via the API. This can only be done once every 30 days to curtail abusive sending so it’s not the ideal method for managing opt-outs. Note: If you do want to opt-out endpoints completely from your account you can always add Endpoints manually to the Opt-Out List via the PutOptedOutNumber Action and use “default” as the “OptOutListName.” Given the previous this means that the common scenario for many customers, needing to send transactional messages such as One Time Password (OTP) as well as marketing related materials, requires configuring new Opt-Out Lists.

The first step in allowing your customers to receive critical communications like OTPs but opt out of other communications like marketing materials is to make sure that each use case has its own Origination Identity (OID). This means that if you have two use cases for SMS, such as OTP and marketing related messaging, you need to procure an OID for each of them. This needs to be done for each country you plan on having support for sending SMS. While this increases your cost, it is the only way to accomplish differentiated sending across multiple use cases.

Prerequisites

  • In order to manage Opt-Out Lists you need to use the V2 API for SMS and voice
    • You can do the setup using the V2 APIs and still use SendMessage if you would like, but setup of Opt-Out Lists are only available in the V2 API
  • You must Purchase/Register an OID for each use-case in each country you plan to support
    • Example: If you are sending marketing materials and OTP messages in the US and are using a short code then you will need to purchase at least two short codes and register each use case.

How to Create Opt-Out Lists and Send SMS
In order to manage opt-outs per origination identity(OID) you need to create an Opt-Out List for each use case. There are two ways to accomplish this, below you will find the process for each The basic process for this is below:

  • Option 1
    • The easiest way to add an Opt-Out List to an OID is when you procure the number.
      • First create an Opt-Out List using CreateOptOutList
      • Then, when procuring a new number either by opening a case or using RequestPhoneNumber, specify the name of that Opt-Out List
        • Note: If you already have a number you can add an Opt-Out List with the UpdatePhoneNumber action
      • Use the PutKeyword action to add keywords
        • Create at least one Opt-In Action Keyword
          • This is the keyword that recipients can use to opt in to receiving your messages for the first time or they can also opt back into previously unsubscribed communications
      • You can now send messages using this phone number and opted-out recipients will be put in your Opt-Out List, not the default Global Account Opt-Out List

While this is a simple way of creating Opt-Out Lists it does not scale well if you are sending globally or are operating as an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) and have multiple locations, use cases, and configurations that you need to assign to lots of numbers.

  • Option 2
    • Create a Pool
      • A Pool is a container for OIDs that share the same use case and thus, the same Opt-Out List. See the image below
      • Set an Opt-Out List for the Pool by using the UpdatePool Action and specifying the “OptOutListName”
    • Associate an OID to that Pool
      • You can have multiple OIDs per Pool if necessary
      • Note: Opt-Out Lists of OIDs and Pools must match, so if you previously associated an Opt-Out List to any OIDs you may need to update those OIDs to match that of the Pool prior to associating it with the Pool.
    • Send your SMS using the Pool Id or Pool Arn for the “OriginationIdentity” using the SendTextMessage Action

Conclusion
In this post you have learned how to create Opt-Out Lists that give you better control over how your customers opt out of your communications. Using custom Opt-Out Lists allows you to have multiple SMS use cases and gives your customers the ability to receive critical communications such as OTP, but not receive communications like marketing that they are not interested in. The V2 API for SMS and Voice has many more useful actions not possible with the V1 API so we encourage you to explore how it can further help you simplify and automate your applications.

AI as Sensemaking for Public Comments

It’s become fashionable to think of artificial intelligence as an inherently dehumanizing technology, a ruthless force of automation that has unleashed legions of virtual skilled laborers in faceless form. But what if AI turns out to be the one tool able to identify what makes your ideas special, recognizing your unique perspective and potential on the issues where it matters most?

You’d be forgiven if you’re distraught about society’s ability to grapple with this new technology. So far, there’s no lack of prognostications about the democratic doom that AI may wreak on the US system of government. There are legitimate reasons to be concerned that AI could spread misinformation, break public comment processes on regulations, inundate legislators with artificial constituent outreach, help to automate corporate lobbying, or even generate laws in a way tailored to benefit narrow interests.

But there are reasons to feel more sanguine as well. Many groups have started demonstrating the potential beneficial uses of AI for governance. A key constructive-use case for AI in democratic processes is to serve as discussion moderator and consensus builder.

To help democracy scale better in the face of growing, increasingly interconnected populations—as well as the wide availability of AI language tools that can generate reams of text at the click of a button—the US will need to leverage AI’s capability to rapidly digest, interpret and summarize this content.

There are two different ways to approach the use of generative AI to improve civic participation and governance. Each is likely to lead to drastically different experience for public policy advocates and other people trying to have their voice heard in a future system where AI chatbots are both the dominant readers and writers of public comment.

For example, consider individual letters to a representative, or comments as part of a regulatory rulemaking process. In both cases, we the people are telling the government what we think and want.

For more than half a century, agencies have been using human power to read through all the comments received, and to generate summaries and responses of their major themes. To be sure, digital technology has helped.

In 2021, the Council of Federal Chief Data Officers recommended modernizing the comment review process by implementing natural language processing tools for removing duplicates and clustering similar comments in processes governmentwide. These tools are simplistic by the standards of 2023 AI. They work by assessing the semantic similarity of comments based on metrics like word frequency (How often did you say “personhood”?) and clustering similar comments and giving reviewers a sense of what topic they relate to.

Think of this approach as collapsing public opinion. They take a big, hairy mass of comments from thousands of people and condense them into a tidy set of essential reading that generally suffices to represent the broad themes of community feedback. This is far easier for a small agency staff or legislative office to handle than it would be for staffers to actually read through that many individual perspectives.

But what’s lost in this collapsing is individuality, personality, and relationships. The reviewer of the condensed comments may miss the personal circumstances that led so many commenters to write in with a common point of view, and may overlook the arguments and anecdotes that might be the most persuasive content of the testimony.

Most importantly, the reviewers may miss out on the opportunity to recognize committed and knowledgeable advocates, whether interest groups or individuals, who could have long-term, productive relationships with the agency.

These drawbacks have real ramifications for the potential efficacy of those thousands of individual messages, undermining what all those people were doing it for. Still, practicality tips the balance toward of some kind of summarization approach. A passionate letter of advocacy doesn’t hold any value if regulators or legislators simply don’t have time to read it.

There is another approach. In addition to collapsing testimony through summarization, government staff can use modern AI techniques to explode it. They can automatically recover and recognize a distinctive argument from one piece of testimony that does not exist in the thousands of other testimonies received. They can discover the kinds of constituent stories and experiences that legislators love to repeat at hearings, town halls and campaign events. This approach can sustain the potential impact of individual public comment to shape legislation even as the volumes of testimony may rise exponentially.

In computing, there is a rich history of that type of automation task in what is called outlier detection. Traditional methods generally involve finding a simple model that explains most of the data in question, like a set of topics that well describe the vast majority of submitted comments. But then they go a step further by isolating those data points that fall outside the mold—comments that don’t use arguments that fit into the neat little clusters.

State-of-the-art AI language models aren’t necessary for identifying outliers in text document data sets, but using them could bring a greater degree of sophistication and flexibility to this procedure. AI language models can be tasked to identify novel perspectives within a large body of text through prompting alone. You simply need to tell the AI to find them.

In the absence of that ability to extract distinctive comments, lawmakers and regulators have no choice but to prioritize on other factors. If there is nothing better, “who donated the most to our campaign” or “which company employs the most of my former staffers” become reasonable metrics for prioritizing public comments. AI can help elected representatives do much better.

If Americans want AI to help revitalize the country’s ailing democracy, they need to think about how to align the incentives of elected leaders with those of individuals. Right now, as much as 90% of constituent communications are mass emails organized by advocacy groups, and they go largely ignored by staffers. People are channeling their passions into a vast digital warehouses where algorithms box up their expressions so they don’t have to be read. As a result, the incentive for citizens and advocacy groups is to fill that box up to the brim, so someone will notice it’s overflowing.

A talented, knowledgeable, engaged citizen should be able to articulate their ideas and share their personal experiences and distinctive points of view in a way that they can be both included with everyone else’s comments where they contribute to summarization and recognized individually among the other comments. An effective comment summarization process would extricate those unique points of view from the pile and put them into lawmakers’ hands.

Ethical Problems in Computer Security

Abstract: The computer security research community regularly tackles ethical questions. The field of ethics / moral philosophy has for centuries considered what it means to be “morally good” or at least “morally allowed / acceptable.” Among philosophy’s contributions are (1) frameworks for evaluating the morality of actions—including the well-established consequentialist and deontological frameworks—and (2) scenarios (like trolley problems) featuring moral dilemmas that can facilitate discussion about and intellectual inquiry into different perspectives on moral reasoning and decision-making. In a classic trolley problem, consequentialist and deontological analyses may render different opinions. In this research, we explicitly make and explore connections between moral questions in computer security research and ethics / moral philosophy through the creation and analysis of trolley problem-like computer security-themed moral dilemmas and, in doing so, we seek to contribute to conversations among security researchers about the morality of security research-related decisions. We explicitly do not seek to define what is morally right or wrong, nor do we argue for one framework over another. Indeed, the consequentialist and deontological frameworks that we center, in addition to coming to different conclusions for our scenarios, have significant limitations. Instead, by offering our scenarios and by comparing two different approaches to ethics, we strive to contribute to how the computer security research field considers and converses about ethical questions, especially when there are different perspectives on what is morally right or acceptable. Our vision is for this work to be broadly useful to the computer security community, including to researchers as they embark on (or choose not to embark on), conduct, and write about their research, to program committees as they evaluate submissions, and to educators as they teach about computer security and ethics.

Power LED Side-Channel Attack

This is a clever new side-channel attack:

The first attack uses an Internet-connected surveillance camera to take a high-speed video of the power LED on a smart card reader­—or of an attached peripheral device—­during cryptographic operations. This technique allowed the researchers to pull a 256-bit ECDSA key off the same government-approved smart card used in Minerva. The other allowed the researchers to recover the private SIKE key of a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone by training the camera of an iPhone 13 on the power LED of a USB speaker connected to the handset, in a similar way to how Hertzbleed pulled SIKE keys off Intel and AMD CPUs.

There are lots of limitations:

When the camera is 60 feet away, the room lights must be turned off, but they can be turned on if the surveillance camera is at a distance of about 6 feet. (An attacker can also use an iPhone to record the smart card reader power LED.) The video must be captured for 65 minutes, during which the reader must constantly perform the operation.

The attack assumes there is an existing side channel that leaks power consumption, timing, or other physical manifestations of the device as it performs a cryptographic operation.

So don’t expect this attack to be recovering keys in the real world anytime soon. But, still, really nice work.

Friday Squid Blogging: Squid Can Edit Their RNA

This is just crazy:

Scientists don’t yet know for sure why octopuses, and other shell-less cephalopods including squid and cuttlefish, are such prolific editors. Researchers are debating whether this form of genetic editing gave cephalopods an evolutionary leg (or tentacle) up or whether the editing is just a sometimes useful accident. Scientists are also probing what consequences the RNA alterations may have under various conditions.

I sometimes think that cephalopods are aliens that crash-landed on this planet eons ago.

SHB is a small, annual, invitational workshop of people studying various aspects of the human side of security, organized each year by Alessandro Acquisti, Ross Anderson, and myself. The fifty or so attendees include psychologists, economists, computer security researchers, criminologists, sociologists, political scientists, designers, lawyers, philosophers, anthropologists, geographers, neuroscientists, business school professors, and a smattering of others. It’s not just an interdisciplinary event; most of the people here are individually interdisciplinary.

Our goal is always to maximize discussion and interaction. We do that by putting everyone on panels, and limiting talks to six to eight minutes, with the rest of the time for open discussion. Short talks limit presenters’ ability to get into the boring details of their work, and the interdisciplinary audience discourages jargon.

For the past decade and a half, this workshop has been the most intellectually stimulating two days of my professional year. It influences my thinking in different and sometimes surprising ways­ 00 and has resulted in some unexpected collaborations.

And that’s what’s valuable. One of the most important outcomes of the event is new collaborations. Over the years, we have seen new interdisciplinary research between people who met at the workshop, and ideas and methodologies move from one field into another based on connections made at the workshop. This is why some of us have been coming back every year for over a decade.

This year’s schedule is here. This page lists the participants and includes links to some of their work. As he does every year, Ross Anderson is live blogging the talks. We are back 100% in person after two years of fully remote and one year of hybrid.

Here are my posts on the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth SHB workshops. Follow those links to find summaries, papers, and occasionally audio/video recordings of the sessions. Ross also maintains a good webpage of psychology and security resources.

It’s actually hard to believe that the workshop has been going on for this long, and that it’s still vibrant. We rotate between organizers, so next year is my turn in Cambridge (the Massachusetts one).

Deploying an automated Amazon CloudWatch dashboard for AWS Outposts using AWS CDK

AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that brings the same AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to virtually any data center, colocation space, manufacturing floor, or on-premises facility where it might be needed. With Outposts, you can run some AWS services on-premises and connect to a broad range of services available in the local AWS Region. Outposts supports workloads requiring low latency, local data processing, data residency, and application migration.

Outposts capacity is driven as per your compute and storage requirements to run workloads. You can monitor Outposts resources using metrics gathered by Amazon CloudWatch. Using these metrics, you can effectively monitor and manage the Outposts resources as they would in the Region, levereging cloud native tools such as CloudWatch dashboards. Check the Monitoring best practices for AWS Outposts blog post to dive deep into the available monitoring options for Outposts.

CloudWatch dashboards are customizable home pages in the CloudWatch console that can be used to monitor resources running on Outposts in a single view. For example, you can monitor in a single pane the number Amazon EC2 instances used per EC2 instance type, the available capacity of Amazon EBS volumes and Amazon S3 buckets, and the operational status of the service link of Outposts.

As a you start deploying additional Outposts resources as a part of their capacity expansion, they must all be integrated and visualized within CloudWatch in an automated way. Traditionally CloudWatch dashboards are built manually and may be time consuming to tune. This post provides also an overview of building CloudWatch dashboards in an automated way using AWS Cloud Development Kit (AWS CDK).

Overview

CloudWatch metrics available to monitor Outposts resources and capacity

CloudWatch metrics for Outposts are available to customers in all public AWS Regions and AWS GovCloud (US) at no additional cost. We can classify the available metrics in two main categories:

To identify the metrics published under the service specific namespaces, we can leverage metadata in the form of tags. A tag is a label that you assign to an AWS resource and consists of a key and an optional value. For the purpose of the monitoring strategy described in this post, we use a tag that contains the OutpostID of the Outpost where the resource is deployed. In this way, we can easily filter the CloudWatch metrics that we would like to show in our dashboard.

To enforce the assignment of tags to our resources we can implement a tagging strategy using AWS tag Policies and Service Control Policies (SCPs).

The following sections describe two different methods to build a CloudWatch dashboard that includes the different types of metrics described so far. In both cases, we see how particularly useful the presence of tags is to identify the service-specific metrics.

Manual approach to building a CloudWatch dashboard for Outposts

This section describes a manual (i.e., non-automated) approach to building a dashboard that could summarize both the capacity utilization metrics and the service specific metrics for your resources running on Outposts.

The benefit of this approach is that we can implement a fully operational dashboard directly from the CloudWatch console. However, it will simultaneously require more effort to properly tune the dashboard to satisfy your monitoring requirements.

You can start creating the dashboard opening the CloudWatch console and following the steps listed in the public documentation.

To display a metric under AWS/Outposts namespace we can choose any of the widgets available. Based on the nature of the data, we can choose different types of Widgets such as Number, Line, Gauge, Explorer, or you can even build your own custom widget.

Together with the Widget type, we must select Outposts namespace in the metric graph dialog box and then navigate to the specific metric of interest.

In case we are creating the dashboard in a different account than the Outposts owner, we must select the right account in the View data drop-down menu to see the Outposts metric in which we are interested.

After selecting one or more metrics we can select Create widget button.

For the service specific metrics, we recommend using the explorer widget. In this way, we can utilize the tagging strategy described earlier to automatically identify the metrics belonging to the resources running on Outposts. Check the documentation page for a step-by-step guide for creating an explorer widget based on tags.

Automated outpost dashboard

After we’ve seen how to build a dashboard manually from the console, in this secton we describe an automated approach to deploy a dashboard for Outposts through AWS CDK.

AWS CDK is an open source software development framework to model and provision your cloud application resources using familiar programming languages, including TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, C#, and Java. For the solution in this post, we use Python.

Architecture overview

The AWS CDK stack described in this post, assumes that the resources running on Outposts (EC2 instances, S3 buckets, Application Load Balancers (ALBs), and RDS instances) are tagged using the tagging strategy described earlier.

Specifying a tag name and a tag value in a configuration file automatically discovers the resources with that tag and adds the related metrics to the CloudWatch dashboard.

Together with the service specific metrics, it creates a series of widgets that we can use to monitor the capacity available and utilized in each Outpost that belongs to the account where the script is running.

The workflow is made of the following phases:

  1. The AWS CDK stack creates an AWS CodeCommit repository and uploads its own code into it. The code contains a series of modules, one for each section of the CloudWatch dashboard. A section of the dashboard contains one or more widgets showing the metrics of a specific service.
  2. To maintain the CloudWatch dashboard always up-to-date with the resources matching the tag, it creates a pipeline in AWS CodePipeline that can dynamically create and or update the dashboard. The pipeline runs the code in the CodeCommit repository and is made of two stages. In the first one, the build stage, it builds the dependencies needed by the AWS CDK stack. In the second stage, the Deploy stage, it loads and runs the modules used to build the dashboard.
  3. Each module contains the code to automatically discover the tagged resources of a specific service. This discovery phase uses standard AWS APIs called through the Python SDK Boto3.
  4. Based on the results of the discovery phase, AWS CDK produces an AWS CloudFormation template containing the definition of the CloudWatch dashboard sections. The template is submitted to CloudFormation.
  5. CloudFormation creates or, if already defined, updates the CloudWatch dashboard.
  6. Together with the dashboard, the AWS CDK script also contains the definition of a CloudWatch Event that, once deployed, triggers the pipeline each time a resource tagged with the specified tag is created or destroyed.

Prerequisites

To implement the solution presented in this post, you must configure:

  1. git as distributed version control system.
  2. In case it is the first time that you’re using AWS CDK in this account and region, you must:

a. Install the AWS CDK, and its prerequisites, following these instructions.

b. Go through the AWS CDK bootstrapping process. This is required only for the first time that we use AWS CDK in a specific AWS environment (an AWS environment is a combination of an AWS account and Region).

How to install

Step 1: Clone the AWS CDK code hosted on GitHub with:

$ git clone https://github.com/aws-samples/automated-cloudwatch-dashboard.git

Step 2: enter the directory using the following:

$ cd  automated-cloudwatch-dashboard/

Step 3: Install the needed Python dependencies with:

$ pip install -r requirements.txt

Step 4: Modify the configuration file

Before deploying the stack, we must modify the configuration file to specify the tag we use for identifying our resources running on Outposts. Open the file with the name config.yaml with your preferred text editor and specify:

      • A name for the dashboard. The default name used is Automated-CloudWatch-Dashboard.
      • Replace <tag_name> placeholder following the tag_name variable with the tag name used to tag the resources that you want to include in the dashboard.
      • Replace <tag_value> placeholder under tag_values variable with the tag value that you used.

Here is an example config.yaml configuration file:

Stack deployment

We can deploy the stack with the following:

$ cdk deploy

At the end of the deployment process, the pipeline that creates the dashboard is provisioned. You can now go to your CloudWatch console to view it.

Now that we have built our dashboard, let’s review each section:

  1. Outpost capacity

The AWS CDK stacks define a capacity section for each Outpost available to the AWS account where the script runs.

In this section, we find four widgets showing metrics published under the AWS/Outpost namespace. The first widget shows for each EC2 instance type available on the Outposts the number of instances utilized and available for that instance type. In the second row, we can visualize the available capacity for the Amazon EBS volumes and for the S3 buckets. The last widget shows the operational status of the service link of Outposts.

2. EC2 instances

CPU, Network, and Disk Utilization for an EC2 instance diagram

In this section of the dashboard, we find the metrics showing the CPU, Network, and Disk Utilization for an EC2 instance. It has defined a section of this type for each EC2 instance with a tag assigned matching the name and the value specified in the configuration file of the script.

3. Application Load Balancer

The ALB section aggregates metrics showing the operational status of a load balancer hosted on Outposts

The ALB section aggregates metrics showing the operational status of a load balancer hosted on Outposts. A section of this type is defined for each ALB with an assigned tag matching the one specified in the configuration file.

4. S3 buckets

The S3 buckets section is defined only once and aggregates the utilization metrics for all S3 buckets with an assigned tag.

5. AutoScaling group

The AutoScaling group section diagram

The AutoScaling group section can be used to monitor the number of instances in service in a specific AS group with a tag assigned. This section is defined once and can aggregate the metrics for multiple AutoScaling groups.

Clean up

To terminate the resources that we created in this post, run the following:

$ cdk destroy

Then, go to the Cloudformation console and delete the stack with the name “Deploy-AutomatedCloudWatchDashboard”.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this post demonstrates a manual way of creating CloudWatch Metrics dashboard using the CloudWatch console and an automated way using AWS CDK. The automated approach is also scalable by automatically discovering any new resources added to the existing Outposts in the your environment without any changes to the code.

Secure Connectivity from Public to Private: Introducing EC2 Instance Connect Endpoint

Imagine trying to connect to an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance within your Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) over the Internet. Typically, you’d first have to connect to a bastion host with a public IP address that your administrator set up over an Internet Gateway (IGW) in your VPC, and then use port forwarding to reach your destination.

Today we launched Amazon EC2 Instance Connect (EIC) Endpoint, a new feature that allows you to connect securely to your instances and other VPC resources from the Internet. With EIC Endpoint, you no longer need an IGW in your VPC, a public IP address on your resource, a bastion host, or any agent to connect to your resources. EIC Endpoint combines identity-based and network-based access controls, providing the isolation, control, and logging needed to meet your organization’s security requirements. As a bonus, your organization administrator is also relieved of the operational overhead of maintaining and patching bastion hosts for connectivity. EIC Endpoint works with the AWS Management Console and AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI). Furthermore, it gives you the flexibility to continue using your favorite tools, such as PuTTY and OpenSSH.

In this post, we provide an overview of how the EIC Endpoint works and its security controls, guide you through your first EIC Endpoint creation, and demonstrate how to SSH to an instance from the Internet over the EIC Endpoint.

EIC Endpoint product overview

EIC Endpoint is an identity-aware TCP proxy. It has two modes: first, AWS CLI client is used to create a secure, WebSocket tunnel from your workstation to the endpoint with your AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) credentials. Once you’ve established a tunnel, you point your preferred client at your loopback address (127.0.0.1 or localhost) and connect as usual. Second, when not using the AWS CLI, the Console gives you secure and seamless access to resources inside your VPC. Authentication and authorization is evaluated before traffic reaches the VPC. The following figure shows an illustration of a user connecting via an EIC Endpoint:

EIC Endpoints provide a high degree of flexibility. First, they don’t require your VPC to have direct Internet connectivity using an IGW or NAT Gateway. Second, no agent is needed on the resource you wish to connect to, allowing for easy remote administration of resources which may not support agents, like third-party appliances. Third, they preserve existing workflows, enabling you to continue using your preferred client software on your local workstation to connect and manage your resources. And finally, IAM and Security Groups can be used to control access, which we discuss in more detail in the next section.

Prior to the launch of EIC Endpoints, AWS offered two key services to help manage access from public address space into a VPC more carefully. First is EC2 Instance Connect, which provides a mechanism that uses IAM credentials to push ephemeral SSH keys to an instance, making long-lived keys unnecessary. However, until now EC2 Instance Connect required a public IP address on your instance when connecting over the Internet. With this launch, you can use EC2 Instance Connect with EIC Endpoints, combining the two capabilities to give you ephemeral-key-based SSH to your instances without exposure to the public Internet. As an alternative to EC2 Instance Connect and EIC Endpoint based connectivity, AWS also offers Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM), which provides agent-based connectivity to instances. SSM uses IAM for authentication and authorization, and is ideal for environments where an agent can be configured to run.

Given that EIC Endpoint enables access to private resources from public IP space, let’s review the security controls and capabilities in more detail before discussing creating your first EIC Endpoint.

Security capabilities and controls

Many AWS customers remotely managing resources inside their VPCs from the Internet still use either public IP addresses on the relevant resources, or at best a bastion host approach combined with long-lived SSH keys. Using public IPs can be locked down somewhat using IGW routes and/or security groups. However, in a dynamic environment those controls can be hard to manage. As a result, careful management of long-lived SSH keys remains the only layer of defense, which isn’t great since we all know that these controls sometimes fail, and so defense-in-depth is important. Although bastion hosts can help, they increase the operational overhead of managing, patching, and maintaining infrastructure significantly.

IAM authorization is required to create the EIC Endpoint and also to establish a connection via the endpoint’s secure tunneling technology. Along with identity-based access controls governing who, how, when, and how long users can connect, more traditional network access controls like security groups can also be used. Security groups associated with your VPC resources can be used to grant/deny access. Whether it’s IAM policies or security groups, the default behavior is to deny traffic unless it is explicitly allowed.

EIC Endpoint meets important security requirements in terms of separation of privileges for the control plane and data plane. An administrator with full EC2 IAM privileges can create and control EIC Endpoints (the control plane). However, they cannot use those endpoints without also having EC2 Instance Connect IAM privileges (the data plane). Conversely, DevOps engineers who may need to use EIC Endpoint to tunnel into VPC resources do not require control-plane privileges to do so. In all cases, IAM principals using an EIC Endpoint must be part of the same AWS account (either directly or by cross-account role assumption). Security administrators and auditors have a centralized view of endpoint activity as all API calls for configuring and connecting via the EIC Endpoint API are recorded in AWS CloudTrail. Records of data-plane connections include the IAM principal making the request, their source IP address, the requested destination IP address, and the destination port. See the following figure for an example CloudTrail entry.

EIC Endpoint supports the optional use of Client IP Preservation (a.k.a Source IP Preservation), which is an important security consideration for certain organizations. For example, suppose the resource you are connecting to has network access controls that are scoped to your specific public IP address, or your instance access logs must contain the client’s “true” IP address. Although you may choose to enable this feature when you create an endpoint, the default setting is off. When off, connections proxied through the endpoint use the endpoint’s private IP address in the network packets’ source IP field. This default behavior allows connections proxied through the endpoint to reach as far as your route tables permit. Remember, no matter how you configure this setting, CloudTrail records the client’s true IP address.

EIC Endpoints strengthen security by combining identity-based authentication and authorization with traditional network-perimeter controls and provides for fine-grained access control, logging, monitoring, and more defense in depth. Moreover, it does all this without requiring Internet-enabling infrastructure in your VPC, minimizing the possibility of unintended access to private VPC resources.

Getting started

Creating your EIC Endpoint

Only one endpoint is required per VPC. To create or modify an endpoint and connect to a resource, a user must have the required IAM permissions, and any security groups associated with your VPC resources must have a rule to allow connectivity. Refer to the following resources for more details on configuring security groups and sample IAM permissions.

The AWS CLI or Console can be used to create an EIC Endpoint, and we demonstrate the AWS CLI in the following. To create an EIC Endpoint using the Console, refer to the documentation.

Creating an EIC Endpoint with the AWS CLI

To create an EIC Endpoint with the AWS CLI, run the following command, replacing [SUBNET] with your subnet ID and [SG-ID] with your security group ID:

aws ec2 create-instance-connect-endpoint \
    --subnet-id [SUBNET] \
    --security-group-id [SG-ID]

After creating an EIC Endpoint using the AWS CLI or Console, and granting the user IAM permission to create a tunnel, a connection can be established. Now we discuss how to connect to Linux instances using SSH. However, note that you can also use the OpenTunnel API to connect to instances via RDP.

Connecting to your Linux Instance using SSH

With your EIC Endpoint set up in your VPC subnet, you can connect using SSH. Traditionally, access to an EC2 instance using SSH was controlled by key pairs and network access controls. With EIC Endpoint, an additional layer of control is enabled through IAM policy, leading to an enhanced security posture for remote access. We describe two methods to connect via SSH in the following.

One-click command

To further reduce the operational burden of creating and rotating SSH keys, you can use the new ec2-instance-connect ssh command from the AWS CLI. With this new command, we generate ephemeral keys for you to connect to your instance. Note that this command requires use of the OpenSSH client. To use this command and connect, you need IAM permissions as detailed here.

Once configured, you can connect using the new AWS CLI command, shown in the following figure:
Figure 3 shows the AWS CLI view if successfully connecting to your instance using the one-click command. When running the command, you are prompted to connect and can access your instance.

To test connecting to your instance from the AWS CLI, you can run the following command where [INSTANCE] is the instance ID of your EC2 instance:

aws ec2-instance-connect ssh --instance-id [INSTANCE]

Note that you can still use long-lived SSH credentials to connect if you must maintain existing workflows, which we will show in the following. However, note that dynamic, frequently rotated credentials are generally safer.

Open-tunnel command

You can also connect using SSH with standard tooling or using the proxy command. To establish a private tunnel (TCP proxy) to the instance, you must run one AWS CLI command, which you can see in the following figure:

You can run the following command to test connectivity, where [INSTANCE] is the instance ID of your EC2 instance and [SSH-KEY] is the location and name of your SSH key. For guidance on the use of SSH keys, refer to our documentation on Amazon EC2 key pairs and Linux instances.

Once we have our EIC Endpoint configured, we can SSH into our EC2 instances without a public IP or IGW using the AWS CLI.

Conclusion

EIC Endpoint provides a secure solution to connect to your instances via SSH or RDP in private subnets without IGWs, public IPs, agents, and bastion hosts. By configuring an EIC Endpoint for your VPC, you can securely connect using your existing client tools or the Console/AWS CLI. To learn more, visit the EIC Endpoint documentation.

On the Need for an AI Public Option

Artificial intelligence will bring great benefits to all of humanity. But do we really want to entrust this revolutionary technology solely to a small group of US tech companies?

Silicon Valley has produced no small number of moral disappointments. Google retired its “don’t be evil” pledge before firing its star ethicist. Self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” Elon Musk bought Twitter in order to censor political speech, retaliate against journalists, and ease access to the platform for Russian and Chinese propagandists. Facebook lied about how it enabled Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and paid a public relations firm to blame Google and George Soros instead.

These and countless other ethical lapses should prompt us to consider whether we want to give technology companies further abilities to learn our personal details and influence our day-to-day decisions. Tech companies can already access our daily whereabouts and search queries. Digital devices monitor more and more aspects of our lives: We have cameras in our homes and heartbeat sensors on our wrists sending what they detect to Silicon Valley.

Now, tech giants are developing ever more powerful AI systems that don’t merely monitor you; they actually interact with you—and with others on your behalf. If searching on Google in the 2010s was like being watched on a security camera, then using AI in the late 2020s will be like having a butler. You will willingly include them in every conversation you have, everything you write, every item you shop for, every want, every fear, everything. It will never forget. And, despite your reliance on it, it will be surreptitiously working to further the interests of one of these for-profit corporations.

There’s a reason Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and other large tech companies are leading the AI revolution: Building a competitive large language model (LLM) like the one powering ChatGPT is incredibly expensive. It requires upward of $100 million in computational costs for a single model training run, in addition to access to large amounts of data. It also requires technical expertise, which, while increasingly open and available, remains heavily concentrated in a small handful of companies. Efforts to disrupt the AI oligopoly by funding start-ups are self-defeating as Big Tech profits from the cloud computing services and AI models powering those start-ups—and often ends up acquiring the start-ups themselves.

Yet corporations aren’t the only entities large enough to absorb the cost of large-scale model training. Governments can do it, too. It’s time to start taking AI development out of the exclusive hands of private companies and bringing it into the public sector. The United States needs a government-funded-and-directed AI program to develop widely reusable models in the public interest, guided by technical expertise housed in federal agencies.

So far, the AI regulation debate in Washington has focused on the governance of private-sector activity—which the US Congress is in no hurry to advance. Congress should not only hurry up and push AI regulation forward but also go one step further and develop its own programs for AI. Legislators should reframe the AI debate from one about public regulation to one about public development.

The AI development program could be responsive to public input and subject to political oversight. It could be directed to respond to critical issues such as privacy protection, underpaid tech workers, AI’s horrendous carbon emissions, and the exploitation of unlicensed data. Compared to keeping AI in the hands of morally dubious tech companies, the public alternative is better both ethically and economically. And the switch should take place soon: By the time AI becomes critical infrastructure, essential to large swaths of economic activity and daily life, it will be too late to get started.

Other countries are already there. China has heavily prioritized public investment in AI research and development by betting on a handpicked set of giant companies that are ostensibly private but widely understood to be an extension of the state. The government has tasked Alibaba, Huawei, and others with creating products that support the larger ecosystem of state surveillance and authoritarianism.

The European Union is also aggressively pushing AI development. The European Commission already invests 1 billion euros per year in AI, with a plan to increase that figure to 20 billion euros annually by 2030. The money goes to a continent-wide network of public research labs, universities, and private companies jointly working on various parts of AI. The Europeans’ focus is on knowledge transfer, developing the technology sector, use of AI in public administration, mitigating safety risks, and preserving fundamental rights. The EU also continues to be at the cutting edge of aggressively regulating both data and AI.

Neither the Chinese nor the European model is necessarily right for the United States. State control of private enterprise remains anathema in American political culture and would struggle to gain mainstream traction. The tech companies—and their supporters in both US political parties—are opposed to robust public governance of AI. But Washington can take inspiration from China and Europe’;s long-range planning and leadership on regulation and public investment. With boosters pointing to hundreds of trillions of dollars of global economic value associated with AI, the stakes of international competition are compelling. As in energy and medical research, which have their own federal agencies in the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health, respectively, there is a place for AI research and development inside government.

Beside the moral argument against letting private companies develop AI, there’s a strong economic argument in favor of a public option as well. A publicly funded LLM could serve as an open platform for innovation, helping any small business, nonprofit, or individual entrepreneur to build AI-assisted applications.

There’s also a practical argument. Building AI is within public reach because governments don’t need to own and operate the entire AI supply chain. Chip and computer production, cloud data centers, and various value-added applications—such as those that integrate AI with consumer electronics devices or entertainment software—do not need to be publicly controlled or funded.

One reason to be skeptical of public funding for AI is that it might result in a lower quality and slower innovation, given greater ethical scrutiny, political constraints, and fewer incentives due to a lack of market competition. But even if that is the case, it would be worth broader access to the most important technology of the 21st century. And it is by no means certain that public AI has to be at a disadvantage. The open-source community is proof that it’s not always private companies that are the most innovative.

Those who worry about the quality trade-off might suggest a public buyer model, whereby Washington licenses or buys private language models from Big Tech instead of developing them itself. But that doesn’t go far enough to ensure that the tools are aligned with public priorities and responsive to public needs. It would not give the public detailed insight into or control of the inner workings and training procedures for these models, and it would still require strict and complex regulation.

There is political will to take action to develop AI via public, rather than private, funds—but this does not yet equate to the will to create a fully public AI development agency. A task force created by Congress recommended in January a $2.6 billion federal investment in computing and data resources to prime the AI research ecosystem in the United States. But this investment would largely serve to advance the interests of Big Tech, leaving the opportunity for public ownership and oversight unaddressed.

Nonprofit and academic organizations have already created open-access LLMs. While these should be celebrated, they are not a substitute for a public option. Nonprofit projects are still beholden to private interests, even if they are benevolent ones. These private interests can change without public input, as when OpenAI effectively abandoned its nonprofit origins, and we can’t be sure that their founding intentions or operations will survive market pressures, fickle donors, and changes in leadership.

The US government is by no means a perfect beacon of transparency, a secure and responsible store of our data, or a genuine reflection of the public’s interests. But the risks of placing AI development entirely in the hands of demonstrably untrustworthy Silicon Valley companies are too high. AI will impact the public like few other technologies, so it should also be developed by the public.

Amazon SES – Set up notifications for bounces and complaints

Why is it important to monitor bounces and complaints when using Amazon Simple Email Service?

Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is a scalable cloud email service provider that is cost-effective and flexible. Amazon SES allows businesses and individuals to send bulk emails to their customers and subscribers. However, as with any email service, there is always a risk of emails bouncing or being marked as spam by recipients. These bounces and complaints can have serious consequences for your email deliverability and can even lead to your email account being suspended or blocked. That’s why it’s important to monitor bounces and complaints when using Amazon SES for email sending. By using Simple Notification Services (Amazon SNS) notifications, you can set up notifications and proactively address any issues and ensure that your emails are delivered successfully to your intended recipients. In this blog, we’ll show how to set up notifications for bounces and complaints in Amazon SES, so you can stay on top of your email deliverability and maintain a positive sender reputation.

Understanding bounces and complaints:

Understanding bounces and complaints is crucial when it comes to email marketing. In simple terms, a bounce occurs when an email is undeliverable and is returned to the sender. There are two types of bounces: soft bounces and hard bounces. A soft bounce is a temporary issue, such as a full inbox or a server error, and the email may be delivered successfully on a subsequent attempt. A hard bounce, on the other hand, is a permanent issue, such as an invalid email address, and the email will never be delivered. On the other hand, a complaint occurs when a recipient marks an email as spam or unwanted. Complaints can be particularly damaging to your email deliverability and can lead to your emails being blocked or sent to the recipient’s spam folder. By monitoring bounces and complaints and taking appropriate action, you can maintain a positive sender reputation and ensure that your emails are delivered successfully to your intended recipients.

Amazon SES provides tools like Virtual Deliverability Manager (VDM) to manage the deliverability at the ISP, sub-domain or configuration set level. You can see the details in this blog.

Solution walkthrough:

This post gives detailed instructions on how to use Amazon Simple Notification Service SNS to monitor and receive notifications on bounces and complaints in Amazon SES. This blog also has FAQs and troubleshooting tips if you are not receiving notifications following the setup: (below are the steps with detailed instructions and screenshots)

Prerequisites:

For this walkthrough, you should have the following prerequisites:

  1. An active AWS account.
  2. A verified identity (Email address or Domain) in Amazon SES.
  3. Administrative Access to Amazon SES Console and Amazon SNS Console.

Step 1: Create an Amazon SNS topic and subscription:

      1. Sign in to the Amazon SNS console.
      2. Under Amazon SNS homepage provide a Topic name and click on Next steps:

      4. For Type, choose a topic type Standard.
        Note: Standard topics are better suited for use cases that require higher message publish and delivery throughput rates which fits the SES bounces and complaints monitoring.
      5. SNS standard queue
      6. (Optional) Expand the Encryption section if you would like to encrypt the SNS topic.
        • Choose Enable encryption.
        • Specify the AWS KMS key. For more information, see Key terms.
        • For each KMS type, the Description, Account, and KMS ARN are displayed.

      8. Scroll to the end of the form and choose Create topic. The topic is created and the console opens the new topic’s Details page.
      9. To create the subscription on the Subscriptions page, choose Create subscription.

      11. On the Create subscription page, choose the Topic ARN that you created in the previous step.
      12. For Protocol, choose Email. There are multiple protocols available to use and it depends on where you would like to receive the SNS notifications for bounces and complaints. Please refer to list of available protocols.
      13. For Endpoint, enter an email address that can receive notifications.
        Note: this should be existing email address with accessible mailbox.

      15. Scroll to the bottom and click Create subscription. The console opens the new subscription’s Details page.
      16. After your subscription is created, you need to confirm it through the email address provided above.
      17. Check your email inbox you provided in the endpoint in previous step and and choose Confirm subscription in the email from AWS Notifications. The sender ID is usually “[email protected]“.

      19. Amazon SNS opens your web browser and displays a subscription confirmation with your subscription ID.

      21. After subscription is confirmed, refresh the subscription’s Details page and the subscription status will move from Pending to Confirmed.

  • Step 2: Configure Amazon SES to send bounces and complaints to the Amazon SNS topic created:

In this step, I am presenting two methods to monitor your bounces and complaints. Follow Demo 1, if you are looking for a simple way to monitor bounces and complaints events for a specific email identity. Follow Demo 2, if you have many email identities and you want to monitor bounces and complaints along with other events using configuration sets “groups of rules that you can apply to all your verified identities”.

Demo 1: Configure Amazon SES to monitor bounces and complaints for specific email identity (Email, Domain):

The domain/sub-domain/email identity must have a Verified status. If the identity is not in verified status, refer to steps to verify identity with Amazon SES before continuing further.

Prior to starting this demo, it is important to know if you have a verified domain, subdomain, or an email address that shares the root domain. The identity settings (such as SNS and feedback notifications) apply at the most granular level you have set up the verification. Hierarchy is as below:

  • Verified email address identity settings override verified domain identity settings.
  • Verified subdomain identity settings override verified domain identity settings. (lower-level subdomain settings override higher-level subdomain settings).

Hence, if you want to monitor bounces and complaints for all email addresses under one domain, it is recommended to verify the domain identity with SES and apply this setting at the domain identity level. If you want to monitor bounces and complaints for specific email address under a verified domain identity, verify this email address explicitly with SES and apply this settings into the email identity level.

  1. Sign in to the Amazon SES console.
  2. In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose Verified identities.
  3. Verified email identities
  4. Select the verified identity in which you want to monitor for bounces and complaints notifications.
  5. In the details screen of the verified identity you selected, choose the Notifications tab and select Edit in the Feedback notifications container.

  7. Expand the SNS topic list box of bounce and complaint feedback type and select the SNS topic you created in Step 1.
    (Optional) If you want your topic notification to include the headers from the original email, check the Include original email headers box directly underneath the SNS topic name of each feedback type then click on save changes.

  9. After configured SNS topic for bounces and complaints, you can disable Email Feedback Forwarding notifications to avoid receive double notifications through Email Feedback Forwarding and SNS notifications.
  10. To Disable it, under the Notifications tab on the details screen of the verified identity, in the Email Feedback Forwarding container, choose Edit, uncheck the Enabled box, and choose Save changes.

Demo 2: Configure Amazon SES to monitor bounces and complaints for emails sent with a configuration set using Amazon SES event publishing.

Configuration sets in SES are groups of rules, that you can apply to your verified identities. When you apply a configuration set to an email, all of the rules in that configuration set are applied to the email. You can use different type of rules with a configuration set. This demo will use event destination, which will allow you to publish bounces and complaints to the SNS topic.

Note: You must pass the name of the configuration set when sending an email. This can be done by either specifying the configuration set name in the headers of emails, or specifying it as a default configuration set. This can be done at the time of identity creation, or later while editing a verified identity.

  1. Sign in to the Amazon SES console.
  2. In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose Configuration sets. Choose Create set.

  4. Enter Configuration set name, leave the rest of fields to default, scroll to the send and click on Create set.

  6. After Configuration set is created, you now need to create Amazon SES event destinations as shown below. Amazon SES sends all bounce and complaint notifications to event destination. In this blog the event destination is Amazon SNS topic.
  7. Navigate to the configuration set you created in step 3. Under configuration set home page click on Event destinations and select Add destination.

  9. Under Select event types, check hard bounces and complaints boxes and click Next.

  11. Specify destination for receiving bounce and complaints notifications, there’s couple of destinations types to choose from. in this demo, we will use Amazon SNS.
  12. Name – enter the name of the destination for this configuration set. The name can include letters, numbers, dashes, and hyphens.
  13. Event publishing – to turn on event publishing for this destination, select the Enabled check box.
  14. Under Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) topic , Expand the SNS topic list box and select the SNS topic you created in Step 1 and click Next.

  16. Review, When you are satisfied that your entries are correct, choose Add destination to add your event destination.
  17. Once you choose Add destination , the summary of event destination will show a “Successfully validated SNS topic for Amazon SES event publishing” email.

Step 3: Using Amazon SES Mailbox Simulator to test send and receive a bounce notification via SNS topic:

Test 1: Send a test email to test Demo 1 “Configure Amazon SES to monitor bounces and complaints for specific email identity (Email, Domain) ” in previous step

In this test, I will send a test message from my verified identity which configured to send any bounce and complaint notifications it receives to SNS topic and email address subscribed to the topic. I will use SES mailbox simulator to simulate a bounce message to test this setup.

  1. Sign in to the Amazon SES console.
  2. In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose Verified identities.
  3. Select the verified identity you configured SNS notifications for bounces and complaints in Demo 1. In this test, I selected a verified domain identity.
  4. Click on Send test email from the upper right corner.

  6. Under send message details, in From-address enter the first part of email address under this verified domain (from-address could be pre-populated).
  7. For Scenario, Expand the simulated scenarios and select Bounce scenario to test send a bounce message.
  8. For Subject, enter the desired email subject. For Body, type an optional body text then leave the rest of options as a default. Click on Send test email to send the email.

  10. You should have an email from AWS notifications with bounce notification and details on the bounce.
  11. Content of bounce message includes the notificationType “Bounce/Complaint”, bouncedRecipients, diagnosticCode “reason the message bounced”, remoteMtaIp “IP of the recipient MTA rejected the message”, SourceIp “IP of the sender application”, callerIdentity “IAM user sending this message”. These details can help in identifying the reason behind why email is not delivered and bounced and will help you avoid such bounces in the future. Refer this document for additional content on bounce events.

Test 2: Send a test email to test Demo 2 “Configure Amazon SES to monitor bounces and complaints for emails sent with a configuration set using Amazon SES event publishing” in previous step

In this test, you can send a test message from any verified identity and by using the configuration set created in Step 2 which is configured to send any bounce and complaint notifications to SNS topic and email address subscribed to the topic. You can use SES mailbox simulator to simulate a bounce message to test this setup.

  1. Sign in to the Amazon SES console.
  2. In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose Verified identities.
  3. Select any verified identity you want to send emails from. In this test, I selected a verified domain identity.
  4. Click on Send test email from the upper right corner.
  5. Under send message details From-address enter the first part of email address under this verified domain.
  6. For Scenario, Expand the simulated scenarios and select Bounce scenario to test send a bounce message.
  7. For Subject, enter the desired email subject. For Body, type an optional body text.
  8. For Configuration set, Expand the drop-down list and choose the configuration set you created in Demo 2.
  9. Click on Send test email to send the email.

  11. You will find an email from AWS notifications with bounce notification and all details of the bounce.

Content of bounce message includes the EventType “Bounce/Complaint”, bouncedRecipients, diagnosticCode “reason the message bounced” , remoteMTA “IP of the recipient MTA rejected the message”, SourceIp “IP of the sender application”, callerIdentity “IAM user sending this message”, ses:configuration-set “name of the configuration set you use when sending the email” all of this details can help you to identify the reason behind why email is not delivered and bounced and will help you to avoid such bounces in the future. Refer this document for more details on contents of bounce events.
  13. SES notification email

FAQ on this set up:

I configured SNS topic with KMS encryption and I am not receiving bounce or complain notifications for emails:
If your Amazon SNS topic uses AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) for server-side encryption, you have to add permissions to the AWS KMS key policy to allow SES service access the KMS key, an example policy can be found here.

I followed Demo 2. However, when I try to send emails from any verified identity, I don’t receive bounce or complain notifications for emails:
When sending the email, make sure to select the configuration set you configured for bounce and complaints notification. If you followed demo 2 and you sent the email without explicitly using the configuration set in email headers, you will lose tracking for bounce and complaints events.

I am testing the setup. After I sent an email to the bounce simulator, I am not receiving don’t receive any bounce notification emails:
Check the SNS topic subscription if its in pending status and make sure you confirm the topic subscription via subscription email sent to you. If the topic subscription is confirmed, make sure you have access to the inbox of subscription email address and you are not applying any email filters.

Cleaning up:

You should have now successfully setup SNS notifications to monitor bounce and complaints for you Amazon SES emails. To avoid incurring any extra charges, remember to delete any resources created manually if you no longer need them for monitoring.

Resources to delete from SES console:

  1. In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose the verified identity you configured for SNS notifications.
  2. In the details screen of the verified identity you selected, choose the Notifications tab and select Edit in the Feedback notifications container.
  3. Choose No SNS topic from bounce and complaint feedback dropdown menu and click Save changes.
  4. Under the same Notifications tab on the details screen of the verified identity, in the Email Feedback Forwarding container, choose Edit, check the Enabled box, and choose Save changes.
  5. In the navigation pane, under Configuration, choose Configuration sets.
  6. Check the box beside Configuration set you created and select Delete.

Resources to delete from SNS console:

  1. In the navigation pane, from the left side menu, choose Topics.
  2. Check the radio button beside the SNS topic you created and select Delete.
  3. Confirm the topic deletion by writing “delete me”.

Conclusion:

Monitoring bounces and complaints is an essential part of maintaining a successful email sending system, using Amazon SES. By setting up SNS notifications for bounces and complaints, you can quickly identify any issues and take appropriate action to ensure that your emails are delivered successfully to your subscribers. By proactively managing your email deliverability, you can maintain a positive sender reputation and avoid any negative impact on your email marketing efforts.

The New York Times has a long article on the investigative techniques used to identify the person who stabbed and killed four University of Idaho students.

Pay attention to the techniques:

The case has shown the degree to which law enforcement investigators have come to rely on the digital footprints that ordinary Americans leave in nearly every facet of their lives. Online shopping, car sales, carrying a cellphone, drives along city streets and amateur genealogy all played roles in an investigation that was solved, in the end, as much through technology as traditional sleuthing.

At that point, investigators decided to try genetic genealogy, a method that until now has been used primarily to solve cold cases, not active murder investigations. Among the growing number of genealogy websites that help people trace their ancestors and relatives via their own DNA, some allow users to select an option that permits law enforcement to compare crime scene DNA samples against the websites’ data.

A distant cousin who has opted into the system can help investigators building a family tree from crime scene DNA to triangulate and identify a potential perpetrator of a crime.

AI-Generated Steganography

New research suggests that AIs can produce perfectly secure steganographic images:

Abstract: Steganography is the practice of encoding secret information into innocuous content in such a manner that an adversarial third party would not realize that there is hidden meaning. While this problem has classically been studied in security literature, recent advances in generative models have led to a shared interest among security and machine learning researchers in developing scalable steganography techniques. In this work, we show that a steganography procedure is perfectly secure under Cachin (1998)’s information theoretic-model of steganography if and only if it is induced by a coupling. Furthermore, we show that, among perfectly secure procedures, a procedure is maximally efficient if and only if it is induced by a minimum entropy coupling. These insights yield what are, to the best of our knowledge, the first steganography algorithms to achieve perfect security guarantees with non-trivial efficiency; additionally, these algorithms are highly scalable. To provide empirical validation, we compare a minimum entropy coupling-based approach to three modern baselines—arithmetic coding, Meteor, and adaptive dynamic grouping—using GPT-2, WaveRNN, and Image Transformer as communication channels. We find that the minimum entropy coupling-based approach achieves superior encoding efficiency, despite its stronger security constraints. In aggregate, these results suggest that it may be natural to view information-theoretic steganography through the lens of minimum entropy coupling.
