Here are some launches that got my attention during the previous week.

Amazon Route 53 – Now you can enable Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall to filter DNS traffic based on the query type contained in the question section of the DNS query format. In addition, Route 53 now supports geoproximity routing as an additional routing policy for DNS records. Expand and reduce the geographic area from which traffic is routed to a resource by changing the record’s bias value. This is really helpful for industries that need to deliver highly responsive digital experiences.

Amazon CloudWatch LogsCloudWatch Logs now support creating account-level subscription filters. This capability allows you to forward all the logs groups from an account to other services like Amazon OpenSearch Service or Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose.

Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) Amazon ECS now integrates with Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), allowing you to provision and attach EBS volumes to Amazon ECS tasks running on both AWS Fargate and Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (Amazon EC2). Read the blog post Channy wrote where he shows this feature in action.

Amazon EventBridgeEventBridge now supports AWS AppSync as a target of EventBridge buses. This enables you to stream real-time updates from your backend applications to your front-end clients. For example, you can get notifications in your mobile application from an order you did when the order status changes on the backend.

Amazon SageMakerSageMaker now supports M7i, C7i, and R7i instances for machine learning (ML) inference. These instances are powered by custom 4th generation Intel Xeon scalable processors and deliver up to 15 percent better price performance than their previous generations.

AWS named as a Leader in 2023 ISG Provider Lens report for Multi Public Cloud Services – Sovereign Cloud Infrastructure Services (EU)

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is named as a Leader in the 2023 ISG Provider Lens Quadrant Report for Multi Public Cloud Services – Sovereign Cloud Infrastructure Services (EU), published on January 8, 2024. This first-ever Information Services Group (ISG) report evaluates providers of sovereign cloud infrastructure services in the multi public cloud environment and examines how they address the key challenges that confront enterprise clients in the European Union (EU). ISG defines Leaders as representing innovative strength and competitive stability.

AWS received the highest score among the providers that ISG evaluated on portfolio attractiveness, which was assessed on multiple factors, including:

  • Scope of portfolio – breadth and depth of offering
  • Portfolio quality – technology and skills, customer satisfaction, and security
  • Strategy and vision – product roadmap, thought leadership, and investments
  • Local characteristics – product support and infrastructure

According to ISG, “AWS’ network of data centers across the EU provides sovereign cloud services that are highly scalable. The AWS Nitro System, the foundation of AWS’ cloud services, ensures data residency, privacy, and sovereignty.”

AWS Certificate Manager will discontinue WHOIS lookup for email-validated certificates

AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) is a managed service that you can use to provision, manage, and deploy public and private TLS certificates for use with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and your internal connected resources. Today, we’re announcing that ACM will be discontinuing the use of WHOIS lookup for validating domain ownership when you request email-validated TLS certificates.

WHOIS lookup is commonly used to query registration information for a given domain name. This information includes details such as when the domain was originally registered, and contact information for the domain owner and the technical and administrative contacts. Domain owners create and maintain domain registration information outside of ACM in WHOIS, which is a publicly available directory that contains information about domains sponsored by domain registrars and registries. You can use WHOIS lookup to view information about domains that are registered with Amazon Route 53.

Starting June 2024, ACM will no longer send domain validation emails by using WHOIS lookup for new email-validated certificates that you request. Starting October 2024, ACM will no longer send domain validation emails to mailboxes associated with WHOIS lookup for renewal of existing email-validated certificates. ACM will continue to send validation emails to the five common system addresses for the requested domain—we provide a list of these common system addresses in the next section of this post.

In this blog post, we share important details about this change and how you can prepare. Note that if you currently use DNS validation for your certificates requested from ACM, this change doesn’t affect you. These changes only apply to certificates that use email validation.

Background

When you request public certificates through ACM, you need to prove that you own or control the domain before ACM can issue the public certificate. ACM provides two options to validate ownership of a domain: DNS validation and email validation.

AWS recommends that you use DNS validation whenever possible so that ACM can automatically renew certificates that are requested from ACM without requiring action on your part. Email validation is another option that you can use to prove ownership of the domain, but you must manually validate ownership of the domain by using a link provided in an email. Figure 1 is a sample validation email from ACM for the AWS account 111122223333 and AWS US West (Oregon) Region (us-west-2) to validate ownership of the example.com domain.

How does ACM know where to send the validation email? Today, as part of the email validation process, ACM sends domain validation emails to the three contact addresses associated with the domain listed in the WHOIS database. These contact addresses are the domain registrant, technical contact, and administrative contact. You create and maintain domain registration information, including these contact addresses, outside of ACM—in the WHOIS database that your domain registrar provides.

Note: If you use Route53, see Updating contact information for a domain to update the contact information for your domain.

ACM also sends validation emails to the following five common system addresses for each domain: 

  • administrator@your_domain_name
  • hostmaster@your_domain_name
  • postmaster@your_domain_name
  • webmaster@your_domain_name
  • admin@your_domain_name

To prove that you own the domain, you must select the validation link included in these emails. ACM also sends validation emails to these same addresses to renew the certificate when the certificate is 45 days from expiry.

What’s changing?

If you currently use email validation for certificates requested from ACM, there are two important dates that you should be aware of:

  1. Starting June 2024, ACM will no longer send domain validation emails by using WHOIS lookup for new email-validated certificates that you request. ACM will continue to send validation emails to the three WHOIS lookup contact addresses for renewal of existing certificates, until October 2024.
  2. Starting October 2024, ACM will no longer send the validation emails to mailboxes associated with WHOIS lookup for existing certificates. After this date, ACM will not send validation emails to the three WHOIS lookup addresses for new or existing certificates.

ACM will continue to send validation emails to the five common system addresses that we listed in the previous section of this post.

Why are we making this change?

We’re making this change to mitigate a potential availability risk for ACM customers. A TLS certificate that ACM issues is valid for up to 395 days, and if you want to keep using it, you need to renew it prior to expiry. To renew an email-validated certificate, you must approve an email that ACM sends. ACM sends the first renewal email 45 days prior to certificate renewal, and if you don’t respond to this email, ACM sends additional reminders prior to expiry. If a certificate bound to one of your AWS resources—such as an Application Load Balancer—expires without being renewed, this could cause an outage for your application.

Some domain registrars that support WHOIS have made changes to the data that they publish to support their compliance with various privacy laws and recommended practices. Over the past several years, we’ve observed that the WHOIS lookup success rate has declined to less than 5 percent. If you rely on the contact addresses listed in the WHOIS database provided by your domain registrar to validate your domain ownership, this might create an availability risk. With a 5 percent success rate for WHOIS lookup, you might not receive validation emails for renewals of your certificates around 95 percent of the time. To provide a consistent mechanism for validating domain ownership when renewing certificates, ACM will only send validation emails to the five common system addresses that we listed in the Background section of this post.

What should you do to prepare?

If you currently monitor one of the five common system addresses (listed previously) for your domains, you don’t need to take any action. Otherwise, we strongly recommend that you create new DNS-validated certificates rather than creating and using email-validated certificates. ACM can automatically renew a DNS-validated certificate, without you taking any action, as long as the CNAME is accurately configured.

Alternatively, if you want to continue using email-validated certificates, we recommend that you monitor at least one of the five common email addresses listed previously. ACM sends the validation emails during certificate issuance for new ACM-issued certificates and during renewal of existing certificates. You can use the ACM describe-certificate API or check the certificate details on the ACM console to see if ACM previously sent validation emails to the relevant system addresses.

In addition, we strongly recommend that you use ACM Certificate Approaching Expiration events to monitor your certificates for expiry and help ensure that you’re notified about certificates that require an action from you to renew. Conclusion

In this blog post, we outlined the changes coming to the email validation process when requesting and renewing certificates from ACM. We also shared the steps that you can take to prepare for this change, including monitoring at least one of the five relevant email addresses for your domains. Remember that these changes only apply to certificates that use email validation, not certificates that use DNS validation. Amazon OpenSearch Service search enhancements: 2023 roundup

What users expect from search engines has evolved over the years. Just returning lexically relevant results quickly is no longer enough for most users. Now users seek methods that allow them to get even more relevant results through semantic understanding or even search through image visual similarities instead of textual search of metadata. Amazon OpenSearch Service includes many features that allow you to enhance your search experience. We are excited about the OpenSearch Service features and enhancements we’ve added to that toolkit in 2023.

2023 was a year of rapid innovation within the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) space, and search has been a significant beneficiary of that progress. Throughout 2023, Amazon OpenSearch Service invested in enabling search teams to use the latest AI/ML technologies to improve and augment your existing search experiences, without having to rewrite your applications or build bespoke orchestrations, resulting in unlocking rapid development, iteration, and productization. These investments include the introduction of new search methods as well as functionality to simplify implementation of the methods available, which we review in this post.

Background: Lexical and semantic search

Before we get started, let’s review lexical and semantic search.

Lexical search

In lexical search, the search engine compares the words in the search query to the words in the documents, matching word for word. Only items that have words the user typed match the query. Traditional lexical search, based on term frequency models like BM25, is widely used and effective for many search applications. However, lexical search techniques struggle to go beyond the words included in the user’s query, resulting in highly relevant potential results not always being returned.

Semantic search

In semantic search, the search engine uses an ML model to encode text or other media (such as images and videos) from the source documents as a dense vector in a high-dimensional vector space. This is also called embedding the text into the vector space. It similarly codes the query as a vector and then uses a distance metric to find nearby vectors in the multi-dimensional space to find matches. The algorithm for finding nearby vectors is called k-nearest neighbors (k-NN). Semantic search doesn’t match individual query terms—it finds documents whose vector embedding is near the query’s embedding in the vector space and therefore semantically similar to the query. This allows you to return highly relevant items even if they don’t contain any of the words that were in the query.

OpenSearch has provided vector similarity search (k-NN and approximate k-NN) for several years, which has been valuable for customers who adopted it. However, not all customers who have the opportunity to benefit from k-NN have adopted it, due to the significant engineering effort and resources required to do so.

2023 releases: Fundamentals

In 2023 several features and improvements were launched on OpenSearch Service, including new features which are fundamental building blocks for continued search enhancements.

The OpenSearch Compare Search Results tool

The Compare Search Results tool, generally available in OpenSearch Service version 2.11, allows you to compare search results from two ranking techniques side by side, in OpenSearch Dashboards, to determine whether one query produces better results than the other. For customers who are interested in experimenting with the latest search methods powered by ML-assisted models, the ability to compare search results is critical. This can include comparing lexical search, semantic search, and hybrid search techniques to understand the benefits of each technique against your corpus, or adjustments such as field weighting and different stemming or lemmatization strategies.

The following screenshot shows an example of using the Compare Search Results tool.

Search pipelines

Search practitioners are looking to introduce new ways to enhance search queries as well as results. With the general availability of search pipelines, starting in OpenSearch Service version 2.9, you can build search query and result processing as a composition of modular processing steps, without complicating your application software. By integrating processors for functions such as filters, and with the ability to add a script to run on newly indexed documents, you can make your search applications more accurate and efficient and reduce the need for custom development.

Search pipelines incorporate three built-in processors: filter_query, rename_field, and script request, as well as new developer-focused APIs to enable developers who want to build their own processors to do so. OpenSearch will continue adding additional built-in processors to further expand on this functionality in the coming releases.

The following diagram illustrates the search pipelines architecture.

Byte-sized vectors in Lucene

Until now, the k-NN plugin in OpenSearch has supported indexing and querying vectors of type float, with each vector element occupying 4 bytes. This can be expensive in memory and storage, especially for large-scale use cases. With the new byte vector feature in OpenSearch Service version 2.9, you can reduce memory requirements by a factor of 4 and significantly reduce search latency, with minimal loss in quality (recall). To learn more, refer to Byte-quantized vectors in OpenSearch.

Support for new language analyzers

OpenSearch Service previously supported language analyzer plugins such as IK (Chinese), Kuromoji (Japanese), and Seunjeon (Korean), among several others. We added support for Nori (Korean), Sudachi (Japanese), Pinyin (Chinese), and STConvert Analysis (Chinese). These new plugins are available as a new package type, ZIP-PLUGIN, along with the previously supported TXT-DICTIONARY package type. You can navigate to the Packages page of the OpenSearch Service console to associate these plugins to your cluster, or use the AssociatePackage API.

2023 releases: Ease-of-use enhancements

The OpenSearch Service also made improvements in 2023 to enhance ease of use within key search features.

Semantic search with neural search

Previously, implementing semantic search meant that your application was responsible for the middleware to integrate text embedding models into search and ingest, orchestrating the encoding the corpus, and then using a k-NN search at query time.

OpenSearch Service introduced neural search in version 2.9, enabling builders to create and operationalize semantic search applications with significantly reduced undifferentiated heavy lifting. Your application no longer needs to deal with the vectorization of documents and queries; semantic search does that, and invokes k-NN during query time. Semantic search via the neural search feature transforms documents or other media into vector embeddings and indexes both the text and its vector embeddings in a vector index. When you use a neural query during search, neural search converts the query text into a vector embedding, uses vector search to compare the query and document embeddings, and returns the closest results. This functionality was initially released as experimental in OpenSearch Service version 2.4, and is now generally available with version 2.9.

AI/ML connectors to enable AI-powered search features

With OpenSearch Service 2.9, you can use out-of-the-box AI connectors to AWS AI and ML services and third-party alternatives to power features like neural search. For instance, you can connect to external ML models hosted on Amazon SageMaker, which provides comprehensive capabilities to manage models successfully in production. If you want to use the latest foundation models via a fully managed experience, you can use connectors for Amazon Bedrock to power use cases like multimodal search. Our initial release includes a connector to Cohere Embed, and through SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock, you have access to more third-party options. You can configure some of these integrations on your domains through the OpenSearch Service console integrations (see the following screenshot), and even automate model deployment to SageMaker.

Integrated models are cataloged in your OpenSearch Service domain, so that your team can discover the variety of models that are integrated and readily available for use. You even have the option to enable granular security controls on your model and connector resources to govern model and connector level access.

To foster an open ecosystem, we created a framework to empower partners to easily build and publish AI connectors. Technology providers can simply create a blueprint, which is a JSON document that describes secure RESTful communication between OpenSearch and your service. Technology partners can publish their connectors on our community site, and you can immediately use these AI connectors—whether for a self-managed cluster or on OpenSearch Service. You can find blueprints for each connector in the ML Commons GitHub repository.

Hybrid search supported by score combination

Semantic technologies such as vector embeddings for neural search and generative AI large language models (LLMs) for natural language processing have revolutionized search, reducing the need for manual synonym list management and fine-tuning. On the other hand, text-based (lexical) search outperforms semantic search in some important cases, such as part numbers or brand names. Hybrid search, the combination of the two methods, gives 14% higher search relevancy (as measured by NDCG@10—a measure of ranking quality) than BM25 alone, so customers want to use hybrid search to get the best of both. For more information about detailed benchmarking score accuracy and performance, refer to Improve search relevance with hybrid search, generally available in OpenSearch 2.10.

Until now, combining them has been challenging given the different relevancy scales for each method. Previously, to implement a hybrid approach, you had to run multiple queries independently, then normalize and combine scores outside of OpenSearch. With the launch of the new hybrid score combination and normalization query type in OpenSearch Service 2.11, OpenSearch handles score normalization and combination in one query, making hybrid search easier to implement and a more efficient way to improve search relevance.

New search methods

Lastly, OpenSearch Service now features new search methods.

Neural sparse retrieval

OpenSearch Service 2.11 introduced neural sparse search, a new kind of sparse embedding method that is similar in many ways to classic term-based indexing, but with low-frequency words and phrases better represented. Sparse semantic retrieval uses transformer models (such as BERT) to build information-rich embeddings that solve for the vocabulary mismatch problem in a scalable way, while having similar computational cost and latency to lexical search. This new sparse retrieval functionality with OpenSearch offers two modes with different advantages: a document-only mode and a bi-encoder mode. The document-only mode can deliver low-latency performance more comparable to BM25 search, with limitations for advanced syntax as compared to dense methods. The bi-encoder mode can maximize search relevance while performing at higher latencies. With this update, you can now choose the method that works best for your performance, accuracy, and cost requirements.

Multi-modal search

OpenSearch Service 2.11 introduces text and image multimodal search using neural search. This functionality allows you to search image and text pairs, like product catalog items (product image and description), based on visual and semantic similarity. This enables new search experiences that can deliver more relevant results. For instance, you can search for “white blouse” to retrieve products with images that match that description, even if the product title is “cream colored shirt.” The ML model that powers this experience is able to associate semantics and visual characteristics. You can also search by image to retrieve visually similar products or search by both text and image to find the products most similar to a particular product catalog item.

You can now build these capabilities into your application to connect directly to multimodal models and run multimodal search queries without having to build custom middleware. The Amazon Titan Multimodal Embeddings model can be integrated with OpenSearch Service to support this method. Refer to Multimodal search for guidance on how to get started with multimodal semantic search, and look out for more input types to be added in future releases. You can also try out the demo of cross-modal textual and image search, which shows searching for images using textual descriptions.

Summary

OpenSearch Service offers an array of different tools to build your search application, but the best implementation will depend on your corpus and your business needs and goals. We encourage search practitioners to begin testing the search methods available in order to find the right fit for your use case. In 2024 and beyond, you can expect to continue to see this fast pace of search innovation in order to keep the latest and greatest search technologies at the fingertips of OpenSearch search practitioners.

AWS successfully renews GSMA security certification for US East (Ohio) and Europe (Paris) Regions

Amazon Web Services is pleased to announce that the AWS US East (Ohio) and Europe (Paris) Regions have been recertified through October 2024 by the GSM Association (GSMA) under its Security Accreditation Scheme for Subscription Management (SAS-SM) with scope Data Centre Operations and Management (DCOM).

The US East (Ohio) Region first obtained GSMA certification in September 2021, and the Europe (Paris) Region first obtained GSMA certification in October 2021. This renewal demonstrates our continuous commitment to adhere to the heightened expectations for cloud service providers. AWS customers who provide an embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC) for mobile devices can run their remote provisioning applications with confidence in the AWS Cloud in the GSMA-certified Regions.

For up-to-date information related to the certification, see the AWS Compliance Program page and choose GSMA under Europe, Middle East & Africa.

AWS was evaluated by independent third-party auditors that GSMA selected. The Certificate of Compliance that shows AWS achieved GSMA compliance status is available on the GSMA website and through AWS Artifact. Fall 2023 SOC reports now available in Spanish

We continue to listen to our customers, regulators, and stakeholders to understand their needs regarding audit, assurance, certification, and attestation programs at Amazon Web Services (AWS). We’re pleased to announce that the Fall 2023 System and Organization Controls (SOC) 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 reports are now available in Spanish. These translated reports will help drive greater engagement and alignment with customer and regulatory requirements across Latin America and Spain. The reports cover the period October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023. We extended the period of coverage to 12 months so that you have a full year of assurance from a single report.

The Spanish language version of the reports doesn’t contain the independent opinion issued by the auditors or the control test results, but you can find this information in the English language version. Stakeholders should use the English version as a complement to the Spanish version.

Translated SOC reports in Spanish are available to customers through AWS Artifact. Translated SOC reports in Spanish will be published twice a year, in alignment with the Fall and Spring reporting cycles.

DNS over HTTPS is now available in Amazon Route 53 Resolver

Starting today, Amazon Route 53 Resolver supports using the DNS over HTTPS (DoH) protocol for both inbound and outbound Resolver endpoints. As the name suggests, DoH supports HTTP or HTTP/2 over TLS to encrypt the data exchanged for Domain Name System (DNS) resolutions.

Using TLS encryption, DoH increases privacy and security by preventing eavesdropping and manipulation of DNS data as it is exchanged between a DoH client and the DoH-based DNS resolver.

This helps you implement a zero-trust architecture where no actor, system, network, or service operating outside or within your security perimeter is trusted and all network traffic is encrypted. Using DoH also helps follow recommendations such as those described in this memorandum of the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

DNS over HTTPS support in Amazon Route 53 Resolver
You can use Amazon Route 53 Resolver to resolve DNS queries in hybrid cloud environments. For example, it allows AWS services access for DNS requests from anywhere within your hybrid network. To do so, you can set up inbound and outbound Resolver endpoints:

  • Inbound Resolver endpoints allow DNS queries to your VPC from your on-premises network or another VPC.Amazon Route 53 Resolver inbound endpoint architecture.
  • Outbound Resolver endpoints allow DNS queries from your VPC to your on-premises network or another VPC.Amazon Route 53 Resolver outbound endpoint architecture.

After you configure the Resolver endpoints, you can set up rules that specify the name of the domains for which you want to forward DNS queries from your VPC to an on-premises DNS resolver (outbound) and from on-premises to your VPC (inbound).

Now, when you create or update an inbound or outbound Resolver endpoint, you can specify which protocols to use:

  • DNS over port 53 (Do53), which is using either UDP or TCP to send the packets.
  • DNS over HTTPS (DoH), which is using TLS to encrypt the data.
  • Both, depending on which one is used by the DNS client.
  • For FIPS compliance, there is a specific implementation (DoH-FIPS) for inbound endpoints.

Let’s see how this works in practice.

Using DNS over HTTPS with Amazon Route 53 Resolver
In the Route 53 console, I choose Inbound endpoints from the Resolver section of the navigation pane. There, I choose Create inbound endpoint.

I enter a name for the endpoint, select the VPC, the security group, and the endpoint type (IPv4, IPv6, or dual-stack). To allow using both encrypted and unencrypted DNS resolutions, I select Do53, DoH, and DoH-FIPS in the Protocols for this endpoint option.

After that, I configure the IP addresses for DNS queries. I select two Availability Zones and, for each, a subnet. For this setup, I use the option to have the IP addresses automatically selected from those available in the subnet.

After I complete the creation of the inbound endpoint, I configure the DNS server in my network to forward requests for the amazonaws.com domain (used by AWS service endpoints) to the inbound endpoint IP addresses.

Similarly, I create an outbound Resolver endpoint and and select both Do53 and DoH as protocols. Then, I create forwarding rules that tell for which domains the outbound Resolver endpoint should forward requests to the DNS servers in my network.

Now, when the DNS clients in my hybrid environment use DNS over HTTPS in their requests, DNS resolutions are encrypted. Optionally, I can enforce encryption and select only DoH in the configuration of inbound and outbound endpoints.

Things to know
DNS over HTTPS support for Amazon Route 53 Resolver is available today in all AWS Regions where Route 53 Resolver is offered, including GovCloud Regions and Regions based in China.

DNS over port 53 continues to be the default for inbound or outbound Resolver endpoints. In this way, you don’t need to update your existing automation tooling unless you want to adopt DNS over HTTPS.

There is no additional cost for using DNS over HTTPS with Resolver endpoints. For more information, see Route 53 pricing.

New Amazon CloudWatch log class to cost-effectively scale your AWS Glue workloads

AWS Glue is a serverless data integration service that makes it easier to discover, prepare, and combine data for analytics, machine learning (ML), and application development. You can use AWS Glue to create, run, and monitor data integration and ETL (extract, transform, and load) pipelines and catalog your assets across multiple data stores.

One of the most common questions we get from customers is how to effectively optimize costs on AWS Glue. Over the years, we have built multiple features and tools to help customers manage their AWS Glue costs. For example, AWS Glue Auto Scaling and AWS Glue Flex can help you reduce the compute cost associated with processing your data. AWS Glue interactive sessions and notebooks can help you reduce the cost of developing your ETL jobs. For more information about cost-saving best practices, refer to Monitor and optimize cost on AWS Glue for Apache Spark. Additionally, to understand data transfer costs, refer to the Cost Optimization Pillar defined in AWS Well-Architected Framework. For data storage, you can apply general best practices defined for each data source. For a cost optimization strategy using Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), refer to Optimizing storage costs using Amazon S3.

In this post, we tackle the remaining piece—the cost of logs written by AWS Glue.

Before we get into the cost analysis of logs, let’s understand the reasons to enable logging for your AWS Glue job and the current options available. When you start an AWS Glue job, it sends the real-time logging information to Amazon CloudWatch (every 5 seconds and before each executor stops) during the Spark application starts running. You can view the logs on the AWS Glue console or the CloudWatch console dashboard. These logs provide you with insights into your job runs and help you optimize and troubleshoot your AWS Glue jobs. AWS Glue offers a variety of filters and settings to reduce the verbosity of your logs. As the number of job runs increases, so does the volume of logs generated.

To optimize CloudWatch Logs costs, AWS recently announced a new log class for infrequently accessed logs called Amazon CloudWatch Logs Infrequent Access (Logs IA). This new log class offers a tailored set of capabilities at a lower cost for infrequently accessed logs, enabling you to consolidate all your logs in one place in a cost-effective manner. This class provides a more cost-effective option for ingesting logs that only need to be accessed occasionally for auditing or debugging purposes.

In this post, we explain what the Logs IA class is, how it can help reduce costs compared to the standard log class, and how to configure your AWS Glue resources to use this new log class. By routing logs to Logs IA, you can achieve significant savings in your CloudWatch Logs spend without sacrificing access to important debugging information when you need it.

CloudWatch log groups used by AWS Glue job continuous logging

When continuous logging is enabled, AWS Glue for Apache Spark writes Spark driver/executor logs and progress bar information into the following log group:

/aws-glue/jobs/logs-v2

If a security configuration is enabled for CloudWatch logs, AWS Glue for Apache Spark will create a log group named as follows for continuous logs:

<Log-Group-Name>-<Security-Configuration-Name>

The default and custom log groups will be as follows:

  • The default continuous log group will be /aws-glue/jobs/logs-v2-<Security-Configuration-Name>
  • The custom continuous log group will be <custom-log-group-name>-<Security-Configuration-Name>

You can provide a custom log group name through the job parameter –continuous-log-logGroup.

Getting started with the new Infrequent Access log class for AWS Glue workload

To gain the benefits from Logs IA for your AWS Glue workloads, you need to complete the following two steps:

  1. Create a new log group using the new Log IA class.
  2. Configure your AWS Glue job to point to the new log group

Complete the following steps to create a new log group using the new Infrequent Access log class:

  1. On the CloudWatch console, choose Log groups under Logs in the navigation pane.
  2. Choose Create log group.
  3. For Log group name, enter /aws-glue/jobs/logs-v2-infrequent-access.
  4. For Log class, choose Infrequent Access.
  5. Choose Create.

Complete the following steps to configure your AWS Glue job to point to the new log group:

  1. On the AWS Glue console, choose ETL jobs in the navigation pane.
  2. Choose your job.
  3. On the Job details tab, choose Add new parameter under Job parameters.
  4. For Key, enter --continuous-log-logGroup.
  5. For Value, enter /aws-glue/jobs/logs-v2-infrequent-access.
  6. Choose Save.
  7. Choose Run to trigger the job.

New log events are written into the new log group.

View the logs with the Infrequent Access log class

Now you’re ready to view the logs with the Infrequent Access log class. Open the log group /aws-glue/jobs/logs-v2-infrequent-access on the CloudWatch console.

When you choose one of the log streams, you will notice that it redirects you to the CloudWatch console Logs Insight page with a pre-configured default command and your log stream selected by default. By choosing Run query, you can view the actual log events on the Logs Insights page.

Considerations

Keep in mind the following considerations:

  • You cannot change the log class of a log group after it’s created. You need to create a new log group to configure the Infrequent Access class.
  • The Logs IA class offers a subset of CloudWatch Logs capabilities, including managed ingestion, storage, cross-account log analytics, and encryption with a lower ingestion price per GB. For example, you can’t view log events through the standard CloudWatch Logs console. To learn more about the features offered across both log classes, refer to Log Classes.

Conclusion

This post provided step-by-step instructions to guide you through enabling Logs IA for your AWS Glue job logs. The AWS Canada West (Calgary) Region is now available

Today, we are opening a new Region in Canada. AWS Canada West (Calgary), also known as ca-west-1, is the thirty-third AWS Region. It consists of three Availability Zones, for a new total of 105 Availability Zones globally.

This second Canadian Region allows you to architect multi-Region infrastructures that meet five nines of availability while keeping your data in the country.

A global footprint
Our approach to building infrastructure is fundamentally different from other providers. At the core of our global infrastructure is a Region. An AWS Region is a physical location in the world where we have multiple Availability Zones. Availability Zones consist of one or more discrete data centers, each with redundant power, networking, and connectivity, housed in separate facilities. Unlike with other cloud providers, who often define a region as a single data center, having multiple Availability Zones allows you to operate production applications and databases that are more highly available, fault tolerant, and scalable than would be possible from a single data center.

AWS has more than 17 years of experience building its global infrastructure. And there’s no compression algorithm for experience, especially when it comes to scale, security, and performance.

Canadian customers of every size, including global brands like BlackBerry, CI Financial, Keyera, KOHO, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), Nutrien, Sun Life, TELUS, and startups like Good Chemistry and Cohere, and public sector organizations like the University of Calgary and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), are already running workloads on AWS. They choose AWS for its security, performance, flexibility, and global presence.

AWS Global Infrastructure, including AWS Local Zones and AWS Outposts, gives our customers the flexibility to deploy workloads close to their customers to minimize network latency. AWS in Canada
We have been supporting our customers and partners with infrastructure in Canada since December 2016, when the first Canadian AWS Region, AWS Canada (Central), was launched. In the same year, we launched Amazon CloudFront locations in Toronto and Montreal to better serve your customers in the region. To date, there are ten CloudFront points of presence (PoPs) in Canada: five in Toronto, four in Montreal, and one in Vancouver. We also have engineering teams located in multiple cities in the country.

From 20162021, AWS has invested over 2.57 billion CAD (1.9 billion USD) in Canada and plans to invest up to 24.8 billion CAD (18.3 billion USD) by 2037 in the two Regions. Using the input-output methodology and statistical tables provided by Statistics Canada, we estimate that the planned investment will add 43.02 billion CAD (31 billion USD) to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Canada and support more than 9,300 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in the Canadian economy.

In addition to providing our customers with world-class infrastructure benefits, Amazon is committed to reaching net zero carbon across its business by 2040 and is on a path to powering its operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2025. In 2022, 90 percent of the electricity consumed by Amazon was attributable to renewable energy sources. Additionally, AWS has a goal to be water positive by 2030, returning more water to communities than it uses in its direct operations. Amazon has a total of four renewable energy projects in Canada: three south of Calgary and one close to Edmonton. According to BloombergNEF, Amazon is the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the country (and the world). These projects generate more than 2.3 million megawatt hours (MWH) of clean energyenough to power 1.69 million Canadian homes.

Education is one of our top priorities as well. Since 2017, we have trained more than 200,000 Canadians on cloud computing skills through free and paid AWS Training and Certification programs. Learners of various skill levels, roles, and backgrounds can build knowledge and practical skills with more than 600 free online courses in up to 14 languages on AWS Skills Builder. Amazon is committed to providing 29 million people around the world with free cloud computing skills training by 2025.

Security
Customers around the world trust AWS to keep their data safe, and keeping their workloads secure and confidential is foundational to how we operate. Since the inception of AWS, we have relentlessly innovated on security, privacy tools, and practices to meet, and even exceed, our customers’ expectations.

For example, you decide where to store your data and who can access it. Services such as AWS CloudTrail allow you to verify how and when data are accessed. Our virtualization technology, AWS Nitro System, has been designed to restrict any operator access to customer data. This means no person, or even service, from AWS can access data when it is being used in an EC2 instance. NCC Group, a leading cybersecurity consulting firm based in the United Kingdom, audited the Nitro architecture and affirmed our claims.

Our core infrastructure is built to satisfy the security requirements of the military, global banks, and other high-sensitivity organizations.

In Canada, Neo Financial is a financial tech startup that uses the elasticity of the AWS Cloud to scale its business. They chose AWS in 2019 because we helped them to meet their regulatory requirements. They use EC2 for their core infrastructure, S3 for highly durable storage, Amazon GuardDuty to improve their security posture, and CloudFront to improve performance for their customers.

Performance
The AWS Global Infrastructure is built for performance, offering the lowest latency, lowest packet loss, and highest overall network quality. This is achieved with a fully redundant 400 GbE fiber network backbone, often providing many terabits of capacity between Regions.

To help provide Canadian customers with even lower latency, we have announced two AWS Local Zones in Toronto and Vancouver.

Performance is specially important when you are streaming your favorite TV show. Calgary-based Kidoodle.TV offers a streaming service for children. They have more than 100 million app downloads worldwide and more than 1 billion ad seconds for sale every 2 days. Using AWS, Kidoodle.TV was able to build the same service architecture that multibillion-dollar companies can deploy, which allowed them to seamlessly scale up from 400,000 monthly active users to 12 million in a year.

Additional things to know
We preannounced 12 additional Availability Zones in four future Regions in Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. We will be happy to share more information on these Regions so, stay tuned.

Aujourd’hui, nous inaugurons une nouvelle Région Amazon Web Services (AWS) au Canada. La Région AWS Canada Ouest (Calgary), également connue sous le nom ca‑west‑1, est la 33e Région AWS. Elle compte trois Zones de disponibilité, emmenant ainsi le total des Zones de disponibilité à travers le monde à 105.

Cette deuxième Région au Canada vous permet d’élaborer des infrastructures multi-Régions qui demeurent disponibles 99,999 % du temps, tout en conservant vos données à l’intérieur des frontières canadiennes.

Une empreinte mondiale
Notre approche en matière de développement de notre infrastructure est fondamentalement différente de celle adoptée par d’autres fournisseurs. Au cœur de notre infrastructure mondiale, vous trouvez des Régions. Une Région AWS est un lieu physique dans le monde, dans lequel nous avons plusieurs Zones de disponibilité. Les Zones de disponibilité sont formées d’un ou plusieurs centres de données distincts, chacun doté de systèmes d’alimentation, de réseau et de connectivité redondants, et hébergés dans des installations séparées. Contrairement aux autres fournisseurs infonuagiques, qui définissent souvent une région comme étant un centre de données unique, le fait de pouvoir compter sur plusieurs Zones de disponibilité vous permet d’exploiter des applications et des bases de données de production ayant une plus grande disponibilité, une meilleure tolérance aux pannes et une plus importante évolutivité, allant ainsi au-delà des possibilités offertes par un centre de données unique.

AWS compte plus de 17 années d’expérience dans la mise en œuvre de son infrastructure mondiale. Il n’existe pas d’algorithme de compression pour remplacer une telle expérience, surtout lorsqu’il est question d’évolutivité, de sécurité et de performances.

AWS au Canada
Nous soutenons nos clients et partenaires grâce à notre infrastructure canadienne depuis décembre 2016, lorsque la première Région AWS au Canada, soit la Région AWS Canada (Centre), a été inaugurée. Au cours de cette même année, nous avons lancé des emplacements Amazon CloudFront à Toronto et Montréal afin de mieux servir vos clients dans ces régions. Actuellement, nous comptons 10 points de présence (PdP) au Canada : cinq à Toronto, quatre à Montréal et un à Vancouver. Nous avons également des équipes d’ingénieurs basées dans plusieurs villes à travers le pays.

Entre 2016 et 2021, AWS a investi plus de 2,57 milliards $ CAD (1,9 milliards $ USD) au Canada et prévoit investir jusqu’à 24,8 milliards $ CAD (18,3 milliards $ USD) dans nos deux Régions d’ici 2037. En se basant sur la méthodologie entrée-sortie et les tableaux statistiques fournies par Statistique Canada, nous estimons que les investissements prévus ajouteront 43,02 milliards $ CAD (31 milliards USD) au produit intérieur brut (PIB) du Canada et soutiendront plus de 9 300 emplois équivalents temps plein (ETP) au sein de l’économie canadienne.

En plus d’offrir les avantages d’une infrastructure de classe mondiale à nos clients, Amazon s’est engagé à atteindre une empreinte carbone nette zéro pour l’ensemble de ses activités d’ici 2040, et est en voie d’alimenter l’ensemble de ses opérations avec des énergies 100 % renouvelables d’ici 2025. En 2022, 90 % de l’électricité consommée par Amazon provenait de sources d’énergie renouvelables. En outre, AWS s’est donné comme objectif d’avoir un bilan positif en matière d’eau d’ici 2030, restituant ainsi plus d’eau aux communautés que la quantité utilisée pour ses activités directes. La formation est également l’une de nos principales priorités. Depuis 2017, nous avons formé plus de 200 000 Canadiens et Canadiennes en compétences infonuagiques par le biais de programmes de formation et certification AWS gratuits et payants. Des apprenants ayant différents niveaux de compétences, de responsabilités et d’expérience peuvent acquérir des connaissances et des compétences pratiques grâce à AWS Skills Builder, qui offre plus de 600 cours en ligne gratuits en jusqu’à 14 langues. Notre technologie de virtualisation, AWS Nitro System, a été conçue pour restreindre l’accès de tout opérateur aux données de la clientèle. Basée au Canada, Neo est une jeune pousse spécialisée en technologie financière qui profite de l’élasticité du Nuage AWS pour développer ses activités. En 2019, l’entreprise a choisi AWS car nous l’avions aidée à répondre aux exigences réglementaires du secteur. Elle utilise Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) pour son infrastructure de base, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) pour un stockage très durable, Amazon GuardDuty pour améliorer sa posture de sécurité, ainsi qu’Amazon CloudFront afin d’optimiser les performances de ses systèmes pour sa clientèle.

Performances
L’infrastructure mondiale AWS est conçue pour offrir les meilleures performances et la plus faible latence atteignable, minimiser la perte de paquets et fournir la meilleure qualité générale pour l’ensemble du réseau. Cela est rendu possible grâce à un réseau dorsal de fibre optique de 400 GbE entièrement redondant, permettant souvent plusieurs térabits de capacité entre les Régions.

Afin d’offrir une latence encore plus faible à nos clients canadiens, nous avons annoncé la mise en place de deux Zone locales AWS à Toronto et Vancouver.

Les performances sont davantage importantes lorsque vous visionnez la diffusion en continu de votre émission préférée. L’entreprise Kidoodle.TV, basée à Calgary, offre un service de diffusion en continu destiné aux enfants. Elle compte plus de 100 millions de téléchargements de son application à travers le monde et plus d’un milliard de secondes publicitaires à vendre par période de 48 heures. En utilisant AWS, Kidoodle.TV a pu mettre en place le même type d’architecture de service que les entreprises multimilliardaires sont en mesure de déployer. Cela a permis à l’entreprise de passer, en une année, de 400 000 à 1,2 million d’utilisateurs actifs mensuels.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is excited to announce the availability of a new sponsored report from S&P Global Market Intelligence 451 Research, Centralized Trust for Decentralized Uses: Revisiting Private Certificate Authorities. We heard from customers actively seeking centralized management solutions for multi-cloud environments and worked with 451 Research, a technology research solution that provides a holistic view of opportunities and risks across the enterprise technology landscape, to dive into this topic.

In the report, 451 Research highlights the need for centralized trust as organizations build applications across multiple cloud providers, local infrastructure, and distributed hosting environments. Strengthening customer third-party due diligence with renewed AWS CyberGRX assessment

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is pleased to announce the successful renewal of the AWS CyberGRX cyber risk assessment report. This third-party validated report helps customers perform effective cloud supplier due diligence on AWS and enhances customers’ third-party risk management process.

With the increase in adoption of cloud products and services across multiple sectors and industries, AWS has become a critical component of customers’ environments. Regulated customers are held to high standards by regulators and auditors when it comes to exercising effective due diligence on third parties.

Many customers use third-party cyber risk management (TPCRM) services such as CyberGRX to better manage risks from their evolving third-party environments and to drive operational efficiencies. To help with such efforts, AWS has completed the CyberGRX assessment of its security posture. CyberGRX security analysts perform the assessment and validate the results annually.

The CyberGRX assessment applies a dynamic approach to third-party risk assessment. This approach integrates advanced analytics, threat intelligence, and sophisticated risk models with vendors’ responses to provide an in-depth view of how a vendor’s security controls help protect against potential threats.

Vendor profiles are continuously updated as the risk level of cloud service providers changes, or as AWS updates its security posture and controls. This approach eliminates outdated static spreadsheets for third-party risk assessments, in which the risk matrices are not updated in near real time.

In addition, AWS customers can use the CyberGRX Framework Mapper to map AWS assessment controls and responses to well-known industry standards and frameworks, such as National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-53, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 27001, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), and the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Assessment Act (HIPAA). This mapping can reduce customers’ third-party supplier due-diligence burden.

Customers can access the AWS CyberGRX report at no additional cost. Customers can request access to the report by completing an access request form, available on the AWS CyberGRX page.

2023 ISO and CSA STAR certificates now available with ISO 27001 transition from 2013 to 2022 version

Amazon Web Services (AWS) successfully completed a surveillance audit for ISO 9001:2015, 27001:2022, 27017:2015, 27018:2019, 27701:2019, 20000-1:2018, and 22301:2019, and Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) STAR Cloud Controls Matrix (CCM) v4.0. Ernst and Young Certify Point auditors conducted the audit and reissued the certificates on Nov 22, 2023. The objective of the audit was to assess the level of compliance for AWS services and Regions with the requirements of the applicable international standards.

For ISO 27001, we updated our ISO 27001:2013 certification to the 27001:2022 version.

For ISO 9001:2015, 27001:2022, 27017:2015, 27018:2019, 27701:2019, and 22301:2019, we added seven additional AWS services to the scope of this surveillance audit since the last certification issued on May 23, 2023. The seven additional services are:

For 20000-1:2018, we added additional 65 services (including the seven noted previously) to the scope of this surveillance audit since the last certification issued on Dec 13, 2022.

IAM Access Analyzer simplifies inspection of unused access in your organization

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Access Analyzer offers tools that help you set, verify, and refine permissions. You can use IAM Access Analyzer external access findings to continuously monitor your AWS Organizations organization and Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounts for public and cross-account access to your resources, and verify that only intended external access is granted. Now, you can use IAM Access Analyzer unused access findings to identify unused access granted to IAM roles and users in your organization.

If you lead a security team, your goal is to manage security for your organization at scale and make sure that your team follows best practices, such as the principle of least privilege. When your developers build on AWS, they create IAM roles for applications and team members to interact with AWS services and resources. They might start with broad permissions while they explore AWS services for their use cases. To identify unused access, you can review the IAM last accessed information for a given IAM role or user and refine permissions gradually. If your company has a multi-account strategy, your roles and policies are created in multiple accounts. You then need visibility across your organization to make sure that teams are working with just the required access.

Now, IAM Access Analyzer simplifies inspection of unused access by reporting unused access findings across your IAM roles and users. IAM Access Analyzer continuously analyzes the accounts in your organization to identify unused access and creates a centralized dashboard with findings. From a delegated administrator account for IAM Access Analyzer, you can use the dashboard to review unused access findings across your organization and prioritize the accounts to inspect based on the volume and type of findings. The findings highlight unused roles, unused access keys for IAM users, and unused passwords for IAM users. For active IAM users and roles, the findings provide visibility into unused services and actions. With the IAM Access Analyzer integration with Amazon EventBridge and AWS Security Hub, you can automate and scale rightsizing of permissions by using event-driven workflows.

In this post, we’ll show you how to set up and use IAM Access Analyzer to identify and review unused access in your organization.

Generate unused access findings

To generate unused access findings, you need to create an analyzer. An analyzer is an IAM Access Analyzer resource that continuously monitors your accounts or organization for a given finding type. You can create an analyzer for the following findings:

An analyzer for unused access findings is a new analyzer that continuously monitors roles and users, looking for permissions that are granted but not actually used. This analyzer is different from an analyzer for external access findings; you need to create a new analyzer for unused access findings even if you already have an analyzer for external access findings.

You can centrally view unused access findings across your accounts by creating an analyzer at the organization level. If you operate a standalone account, you can get unused access findings by creating an analyzer at the account level. This post focuses on the organization-level analyzer setup and management by a central team.

Pricing

IAM Access Analyzer charges for unused access findings based on the number of IAM roles and users analyzed per analyzer per month. You can still use IAM Access Analyzer external access findings at no additional cost. For more details on pricing, see IAM Access Analyzer pricing.

Create an analyzer for unused access findings

To enable unused access findings for your organization, you need to create your analyzer by using the IAM Access Analyzer console or APIs in your management account or a delegated administrator account. A delegated administrator is a member account of the organization that you can delegate with administrator access for IAM Access Analyzer. A best practice is to use your management account only for tasks that require the management account and use a delegated administrator for other tasks. For steps on how to add a delegated administrator for IAM Access Analyzer, see Delegated administrator for IAM Access Analyzer.

To create an analyzer for unused access findings (console)

  1. From the delegated administrator account, open the IAM Access Analyzer console, and in the left navigation pane, select Analyzer settings.
  2. Choose Create analyzer.
  3. On the Create analyzer page, do the following, as shown in Figure 1:
    1. For Findings type, select Unused access analysis.
    2. Provide a Name for the analyzer.
    3. Select a Tracking period. The tracking period is the threshold beyond which IAM Access Analyzer considers access to be unused. For example, if you select a tracking period of 90 days, IAM Access Analyzer highlights the roles that haven’t been used in the last 90 days.
    4. Set your Selected accounts. For this example, we select Current organization to review unused access across the organization.
    5. Select Create.

Now that you’ve created the analyzer, IAM Access Analyzer starts reporting findings for unused access across the IAM users and roles in your organization. IAM Access Analyzer will periodically scan your IAM roles and users to update unused access findings. Additionally, if one of your roles, users or policies is updated or deleted, IAM Access Analyzer automatically updates existing findings or creates new ones. IAM Access Analyzer uses a service-linked role to review last accessed information for all roles, user access keys, and user passwords in your organization. For active IAM roles and users, IAM Access Analyzer uses IAM service and action last accessed information to identify unused permissions.

Note: Although IAM Access Analyzer is a regional service (that is, you enable it for a specific AWS Region), unused access findings are linked to IAM resources that are global (that is, not tied to a Region). To avoid duplicate findings and costs, enable your analyzer for unused access in the single Region where you want to review and operate findings.

Your analyzer aggregates findings from across your organization and presents them on a dashboard. The dashboard aggregates, in the selected Region, findings for both external access and unused access—although this post focuses on unused access findings only. You can use the dashboard for unused access findings to centrally review the breakdown of findings by account or finding types to identify areas to prioritize for your inspection (for example, sensitive accounts, type of findings, type of environment, or confidence in refinement).

Review the findings overview to identify the total findings for your organization and the breakdown by finding type. Figure 2 shows an example of an organization with 100 active findings. The finding type Unused access keys is present in each of the accounts, with the most findings for unused access. To move toward least privilege and to avoid long-term credentials, the security team should clean up the unused access keys.

Review the dashboard to identify the accounts with the highest number of findings and the distribution per finding type. In Figure 2, the Audit account has the highest number of findings and might need attention. The account has five unused access keys and six roles with unused permissions. The security team should prioritize this account based on volume of findings and review the findings associated with the account.

In this section, we’ll show you how to review findings. We’ll share two examples of unused access findings, including unused access key findings and unused permissions findings.

Finding example: unused access keys

As shown previously in Figure 2, the IAM Access Analyzer dashboard showed that accounts with the most findings were primarily associated with unused access keys. Let’s review a finding linked to unused access keys.

To review the finding for unused access keys

  1. Open the IAM Access Analyzer console, and in the left navigation pane, select Unused access.
  2. Select your analyzer to view the unused access findings.
  3. In the search dropdown list, select the property Findings type, the Equals operator, and the value Unused access key to get only Findings type = Unused access key, as shown in Figure 3.

  4. Select one of the findings to get a view of the available access keys for an IAM user, their status, creation date, and last used date. Figure 4 shows an example in which one of the access keys has never been used, and the other was used 137 days ago.

From here, you can investigate further with the development teams to identify whether the access keys are still needed. If they aren’t needed, you should delete the access keys.

Finding example: unused permissions

Another goal that your security team might have is to make sure that the IAM roles and users across your organization are following the principle of least privilege. Let’s walk through an example with findings associated with unused permissions.

To review findings for unused permissions

  1. On the list of unused access findings, apply the filter on Findings type = Unused permissions.
  2. Select a finding, as shown in Figure 5. In this example, the IAM role has 148 unused actions on Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) and has not used a service action for 200 days. Similarly, the role has unused actions for other services, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and Amazon DynamoDB.

The security team now has a view of the unused actions for this role and can investigate with the development teams to check if those permissions are still required.

The development team can then refine the permissions granted to the role to remove the unused permissions.

Unused access findings notify you about unused permissions for all service-level permissions and for 200 services at the action-level. For the list of supported actions, see IAM action last accessed information services and actions.

Take actions on findings

IAM Access Analyzer categorizes findings as active, resolved, and archived. In this section, we’ll show you how you can act on your findings.

Resolve findings

You can resolve unused access findings by deleting unused IAM roles, IAM users, IAM user credentials, or permissions. After you’ve completed this, IAM Access Analyzer automatically resolves the findings on your behalf.

To speed up the process of removing unused permissions, you can use IAM Access Analyzer policy generation to generate a fine-grained IAM policy based on your access analysis. For more information, see the blog post Use IAM Access Analyzer to generate IAM policies based on access activity found in your organization trail.

Archive findings

You can suppress a finding by archiving it, which moves the finding from the Active tab to the Archived tab in the IAM Access Analyzer console. To archive a finding, open the IAM Access Analyzer console, select a Finding ID, and in the Next steps section, select Archive, as shown in Figure 6.

You can automate this process by creating archive rules that archive findings based on their attributes. An archive rule is linked to an analyzer, which means that you can have archive rules exclusively for unused access findings.

To illustrate this point, imagine that you have a subset of IAM roles that you don’t expect to use in your tracking period. For example, you might have an IAM role that is used exclusively for break glass access during your disaster recovery processes—you shouldn’t need to use this role frequently, so you can expect some unused access findings. For this example, let’s call the role DisasterRecoveryRole. You can create an archive rule to automatically archive unused access findings associated with roles named DisasterRecoveryRole, as shown in Figure 7.

Automation

IAM Access Analyzer exports findings to both Amazon EventBridge and AWS Security Hub. Security Hub also forwards events to EventBridge.

Using an EventBridge rule, you can match the incoming events associated with IAM Access Analyzer unused access findings and send them to targets for processing. For example, you can notify the account owners so that they can investigate and remediate unused IAM roles, user credentials, or permissions.

Conclusion

With IAM Access Analyzer, you can centrally identify, review, and refine unused access across your organization. As summarized in Figure 8, you can use the dashboard to review findings and prioritize which accounts to review based on the volume of findings. The findings highlight unused roles, unused access keys for IAM users, and unused passwords for IAM users. For active IAM roles and users, the findings provide visibility into unused services and actions. By reviewing and refining unused access, you can improve your security posture and get closer to the principle of least privilege at scale.

Zonal autoshift – Automatically shift your traffic away from Availability Zones when we detect potential issues

Today we’re launching zonal autoshift, a new capability of Amazon Route 53 Application Recovery Controller that you can enable to automatically and safely shift your workload’s traffic away from an Availability Zone when AWS identifies a potential failure affecting that Availability Zone and shift it back once the failure is resolved.

When deploying resilient applications, you typically deploy your resources across multiple Availability Zones in a Region. Availability Zones are distinct groups of physical data centers at a meaningful distance apart (typically miles) to make sure that they have diverse power, connectivity, network devices, and flood plains.

To help you protect against an application’s errors, like a failed deployment, an error of configuration, or an operator error, we introduced last year the ability to manually or programmatically trigger a zonal shift. This enables you to shift the traffic away from one Availability Zone when you observe degraded metrics in that zone. It does so by configuring your load balancer to direct all new connections to infrastructure in healthy Availability Zones only. This allows you to preserve your application’s availability for your customers while you investigate the root cause of the failure. Once fixed, you stop the zonal shift to ensure the traffic is distributed across all zones again.

Zonal shift works at the Application Load Balancer (ALB) or Network Load Balancer (NLB) level only when cross-zone load balancing is turned off, which is the default for NLB. In a nutshell, load balancers offer two levels of load balancing. The first level is configured in the DNS. Load balancers expose one or more IP addresses for each Availability Zone, offering a client-side load balancing between zones. Once the traffic hits an Availability Zone, the load balancer sends traffic to registered healthy targets, typically an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance. By default, ALBs send traffic to targets across all Availability Zones. For zonal shift to properly work, you must configure your load balancers to disable cross-zone load balancing.

When zonal shift starts, the DNS sends all traffic away from one Availability Zone, as illustrated by the following diagram.

Manual zonal shift helps to protect your workload against errors originating from your side. But when there is a potential failure in an Availability Zone, it is sometimes difficult for you to identify or detect the failure. Detecting an issue in an Availability Zone using application metrics is difficult because, most of the time, you don’t track metrics per Availability Zone. Moreover, your services often call dependencies across Availability Zone boundaries, resulting in errors seen in all Availability Zones. With modern microservice architectures, these detection and recovery steps must often be performed across tens or hundreds of discrete microservices, leading to recovery times of multiple hours.

Customers asked us if we could take the burden off their shoulders to detect a potential failure in an Availability Zone. After all, we might know about potential issues through our internal monitoring tools before you do.

With this launch, you can now configure zonal autoshift to protect your workloads against potential failure in an Availability Zone. We use our own AWS internal monitoring tools and metrics to decide when to trigger a network traffic shift. The shift starts automatically; there is no API to call. When we detect that a zone has a potential failure, such as a power or network disruption, we automatically trigger an autoshift of your infrastructure’s NLB or ALB traffic, and we shift the traffic back when the failure is resolved.

Obviously, shifting traffic away from an Availability Zone is a delicate operation that must be carefully prepared. We built a series of safeguards to ensure we don’t degrade your application availability by accident.

First, we have internal controls to ensure we shift traffic away from no more than one Availability Zone at a time. Second, we practice the shift on your infrastructure for 30 minutes every week. You can define blocks of time when you don’t want the practice to happen, for example, 08:00–18:00, Monday through Friday. Third, you can define two Amazon CloudWatch alarms to act as a circuit breaker during the practice run: one alarm to prevent starting the practice run at all and one alarm to monitor your application health during a practice run. When either alarm triggers during the practice run, we stop it and restore traffic to all Availability Zones. The state of application health alarm at the end of the practice run indicates its outcome: success or failure.

According to the principle of shared responsibility, you have two responsibilities as well.

First you must ensure there is enough capacity deployed in all Availability Zones to sustain the increase of traffic in remaining Availability Zones after traffic has shifted. We strongly recommend having enough capacity in remaining Availability Zones at all times and not relying on scaling mechanisms that could delay your application recovery or impact its availability. When zonal autoshift triggers, AWS Auto Scaling might take more time than usual to scale your resources. Pre-scaling your resource ensures a predictable recovery time for your most demanding applications.

Let’s imagine that to absorb regular user traffic, your application needs six EC2 instances across three Availability Zones (2×3 instances). Before configuring zonal autoshift, you should ensure you have enough capacity in the remaining Availability Zones to absorb the traffic when one Availability Zone is not available. In this example, it means three instances per Availability Zone (3×3 = 9 instances with three Availability Zones in order to keep 2×3 = 6 instances to handle the load when traffic is shifted to two Availability Zones).

In practice, when operating a service that requires high reliability, it’s normal to operate with some redundant capacity online for eventualities such as customer-driven load spikes, occasional host failures, etc. Topping up your existing redundancy in this way both ensures you can recover rapidly during an Availability Zone issue but can also give you greater robustness to other events.

Second, you must explicitly enable zonal autoshift for the resources you choose. AWS applies zonal autoshift only on the resources you chose. Applying a zonal autoshift will affect the total capacity allocated to your application. As I just described, your application must be prepared for that by having enough capacity deployed in the remaining Availability Zones.

Of course, deploying this extra capacity in all Availability Zones has a cost. When we talk about resilience, there is a business tradeoff to decide between your application availability and its cost. This is another reason why we apply zonal autoshift only on the resources you select.

Let’s see how to configure zonal autoshift
To show you how to configure zonal autoshift, I deploy my now-famous TicTacToe web application using a CDK script. I open the Route 53 Application Recovery Controller page of the AWS Management Console. On the left pane, I select Zonal autoshift. Then, on the welcome page, I select Configure zonal autoshift for a resource.

I select the load balancer of my demo application. Remember that currently, only load balancers with cross-zone load balancing turned off are eligible for zonal autoshift. As the warning on the console reminds me, I also make sure my application has enough capacity to continue to operate with the loss of one Availability Zone.

I scroll down the page and configure the times and days I don’t want AWS to run the 30-minute practice. At first, and until I’m comfortable with autoshift, I block the practice 08:00–18:00, Monday through Friday. Pay attention that hours are expressed in UTC, and they don’t vary with daylight saving time. You may use a UTC time converter application for help. While it is safe for you to exclude business hours at the start, we recommend configuring the practice run also during your business hours to ensure capturing issues that might not be visible when there is low or no traffic on your application. You probably most need zonal autoshift to work without impact at your peak time, but if you have never tested it, how confident are you? Ideally, you don’t want to block any time at all, but we recognize that’s not always practical.

Further down on the same page, I enter the two circuit breaker alarms. The first one prevents the practice from starting. You use this alarm to tell us this is not a good time to start a practice run. For example, when there is an issue ongoing with your application or when you’re deploying a new version of your application to production. The second CloudWatch alarm gives the outcome of the practice run. It enables zonal autoshift to judge how your application is responding to the practice run. If the alarm stays green, we know all went well.

If either of these two alarms triggers during the practice run, zonal autoshift stops the practice and restores the traffic to all Availability Zones.

Finally, I acknowledge that a 30-minute practice run will run weekly and that it might reduce the availability of my application.

Then, I select Create.

After a few days, I see the history of the practice runs on the Zonal shift history for resource tab of the console. I monitor the history of my two circuit breaker alarms to stay confident everything is correctly monitored and configured.

It’s not possible to test an autoshift itself. It triggers automatically when we detect a potential issue in an Availability Zone. I asked the service team if we could shut down an Availability Zone to test the instructions I shared in this post; they politely declined my request :-).

To test your configuration, you can trigger a manual shift, which behaves identically to an autoshift.

A few more things to know
Zonal autoshift is now available at no additional cost in all AWS Regions, except for China and GovCloud.

We recommend applying the crawl, walk, run methodology. First, you get started with manual zonal shifts to acquire confidence in your application. Then, you turn on zonal autoshift configured with practice runs outside of your business hours. Finally, you modify the schedule to include practice zonal shifts during your business hours. You want to test your application response to an event when you least want it to occur.

We also recommend that you think holistically about how all parts of your application will recover when we move traffic away from one Availability Zone and then back. The list that comes to mind (although certainly not complete) is the following.

First, plan for extra capacity as I discussed already. Second, think about possible single points of failure in each Availability Zone, such as a self-managed database running on a single EC2 instance or a microservice that leaves in a single Availability Zone, and so on. I strongly recommend using managed databases, such as Amazon DynamoDB or Amazon Aurora for applications requiring zonal shifts. These have built-in replication and fail-over mechanisms in place. Third, plan the switch back when the Availability Zone will be available again. How much time do you need to scale your resources? Do you need to rehydrate caches?

Finally, remember that only load balancers with cross-zone load balancing turned off are currently eligible for zonal autoshift. To turn off cross-zone load balancing from a CDK script, you need to remove stickinessCookieDuration and add load_balancing.cross_zone.enabled=false on the target group. Here is an example with CDK and Typescript:

Now it’s time for you to select your applications that would benefit from zonal autoshift. Start by reviewing your infrastructure capacity in each Availability Zone and then define the circuit breaker alarms. Once you are confident your monitoring is correctly configured, go and enable zonal autoshift.

Today, we are announcing an improved Amazon SageMaker Studio experience! The new SageMaker Studio web-based interface loads faster and provides consistent access to your preferred integrated development environment (IDE) and SageMaker resources and tooling, irrespective of your IDE choice. In addition to JupyterLab and RStudio, SageMaker Studio now includes a fully managed Code Editor based on Code-OSS (Visual Studio Code Open Source).

Both Code Editor and JupyterLab can be launched using a flexible workspace. With spaces, you can scale the compute and storage for your IDE up and down as you go, customize runtime environments, and pause-and-resume coding anytime from anywhere. You can spin up multiple such spaces, each configured with a different combination of compute, storage, and runtimes.

SageMaker Studio now also comes with a streamlined onboarding and administration experience to help both individual users and enterprise administrators get started in minutes. Let me give you a quick tour of some of these highlights.

You can also update settings at any time.

To get started, navigate to the SageMaker console and select either Set up for single user or Set up for organization.

Three new capabilities for Amazon Inspector broaden the realm of vulnerability scanning for workloads

Today, Amazon Inspector adds three new capabilities to increase the realm of possibilities when scanning your workloads for software vulnerabilities:

  • Amazon Inspector introduces a new set of open source plugins and an API allowing you to assess your container images for software vulnerabilities at build time directly from your continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines wherever they are running.
  • Amazon Inspector can now continuously monitor your Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances without installing an agent or additional software (in preview).
  • Amazon Inspector uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated reasoning to provide assisted code remediation for your AWS Lambda functions.

Amazon Inspector is a vulnerability management service that continually scans your AWS workloads for known software vulnerabilities and unintended network exposure. Amazon Inspector automatically discovers and scans running EC2 instances, container images in Amazon Elastic Container Registry (Amazon ECR) and within your CI/CD tools, and Lambda functions.

We all know engineering teams often face challenges when it comes to promptly addressing vulnerabilities. This is because of the tight release deadlines that force teams to prioritize development over tackling issues in their vulnerability backlog. But it’s also due to the complex and ever-evolving nature of the security landscape. As a result, a study showed that organizations take 250 days on average to resolve critical vulnerabilities. It is therefore crucial to identify potential security issues early in the development lifecycle to prevent their deployment into production.

Detecting vulnerabilities in your AWS Lambda functions code
Let’s start close to the developer with Lambda functions code.

In November 2022 and June 2023, Amazon Inspector added the capability to scan your function’s dependencies and code. Today, we’re adding generative AI and automated reasoning to analyze your code and automatically create remediation as code patches.

Amazon Inspector can now provide in-context code patches for multiple classes of vulnerabilities detected during security scans. Amazon Inspector extends the assessment of your code for security issues like injection flaws, data leaks, weak cryptography, or missing encryption. Thanks to generative AI, Amazon Inspector now provides suggestions how to fix it. It shows affected code snippets in context with suggested remediation.

Here is an example. I wrote a short snippet of Python code with a hardcoded AWS secret key. Never do that!

I deploy the code. This triggers the assessment. I open the AWS Management Console and navigate to the Amazon Inspector page. In the Findings section, I find the vulnerability. It gives me the Vulnerability location and the Suggested remediation in a plain natural language explanation but also in diff text and graphical formats.

Detecting vulnerabilities in your container CI/CD pipeline
Now, let’s move to your CI/CD pipelines when building containers.

Until today, Amazon Inspector was able to assess container images once they were built and stored in Amazon Elastic Container Registry (Amazon ECR). Starting today, Amazon Inspector can detect security issues much sooner in the development process by assessing container images during their build within CI/CD tools. Assessment results are returned in near real-time directly to the CI/CD tool’s dashboard. There is no need to enable Amazon Inspector to use this new capability.

We provide ready-to-use CI/CD plugins for Jenkins and JetBrain’s TeamCity, with more to come. There is also a new API (inspector-scan) and command (inspector-sbomgen) available from our AWS SDKs and AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI). This new API allows you to integrate Amazon Inspector in the CI/CD tool of your choice.

Upon execution, the plugin runs a container extraction engine on the configured resource and generates a CycloneDX-compatible software bill of materials (SBOM). Then, the plugin sends the SBOM to Amazon Inspector for analysis. The plugin receives the result of the scan in near real-time. It parses the response and generates outputs that Jenkins or TeamCity uses to pass or fail the execution of the pipeline.

To use the plugin with Jenkins, I first make sure there is a role attached to the EC2 instance where Jenkins is installed, or I have an AWS access key and secret access key with permissions to call the Amazon Inspector API.

Then, I add an Amazon Inspector Scan step in my pipeline.

I configure the step with the IAM Role I created (or an AWS access key and secret access key when running on premises), my Docker Credentials, the AWS Region, and the Image Id.

When Amazon Inspector detects vulnerabilities, it reports them to the plugin. The build fails, and I can view the details directly in Jenkins.

The SBOM generation understands packages or applications for popular operating systems, such as Alpine, Amazon Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, and Red Hat packages. It also detects packages for Go, Java, NodeJS, C#, PHP, Python, Ruby, and Rust programming languages.

Detecting vulnerabilities on Amazon EC2 without installing agents (in preview)
Finally, let’s talk about agentless inspection of your EC2 instances.

Currently, Amazon Inspector uses AWS Systems Manager and the AWS Systems Manager Agent (SSM Agent) to collect information about the inventory of your EC2 instances. To ensure Amazon Inspector can communicate with your instances, you have to ensure three conditions. First, a recent version of the SSM Agent is installed on the instance. Second, the SSM Agent is started. And third, you attached an IAM role to the instance to allow the SSM Agent to communicate back to the SSM service. This seems fair and simple. But it is not when considering large deployments across multiple OS versions, AWS Regions, and accounts, or when you manage legacy applications. Each instance launched that doesn’t satisfy these three conditions is a potential security gap in your infrastructure.

With agentless scanning (in preview), Amazon Inspector doesn’t require the SSM Agent to scan your instances. It automatically discovers existing and new instances and schedules a vulnerability assessment for them. It does so by taking a snapshot of the instance’s EBS volumes and analyzing the snapshot. This technique has the extra advantage of not consuming any CPU cycle or memory on your instances, leaving 100 percent of the (virtual) hardware available for your workloads. After the analysis, Amazon Inspector deletes the snapshot.

To get started, enable hybrid scanning under EC2 scanning settings in the Amazon Inspector section of the AWS Management Console. Hybrid mode means Amazon Inspector continues to use the SSM Agent–based scanning for instances managed by SSM and automatically switches to agentless for instances that are not managed by SSM.

Under Account management, I can verify the list of scanned instances. I can see which instances are scanned with the SSM Agent and which are not.

Under Findings, I can filter by vulnerability, by account, by instance, and so on. I select by instance and select the agentless instance I want to review.

For that specific instance, Amazon Inspector lists more than 200 findings, sorted by severity.

Fall 2023 SOC reports now available with 171 services in scope

At Amazon Web Services (AWS), we’re committed to providing our customers with continued assurance over the security, availability, confidentiality, and privacy of the AWS control environment.

We’re proud to deliver the Fall 2023 System and Organizational (SOC) 1, 2, and 3 reports to support your confidence in AWS services. The reports cover the period October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023. We extended the period of coverage to 12 months so that you have a full year of assurance from a single report. We also updated the associated infrastructure supporting our in-scope products and services to reflect new edge locations, AWS Wavelength zones, and AWS Local Zones.

The SOC 2 report includes the Security, Availability, Confidentiality, and Privacy Trust Service Criteria that cover both the design and operating effectiveness of controls over a period of time. The SOC 2 Privacy Trust Service Criteria, developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), establishes the criteria for evaluating controls and how personal information is collected, used, retained, disclosed, and disposed of. For more information about our privacy commitments supporting the SOC 2 Type 2 report, see the AWS Customer Agreement.

The scope of the Fall 2023 SOC 2 Type 2 report includes information about how we handle the content that you upload to AWS, and how we protect that content across the services and locations that are in scope for the latest AWS SOC reports.

Package and deploy models faster with new tools and guided workflows in Amazon SageMaker

I’m happy to share that Amazon SageMaker now comes with an improved model deployment experience to help you deploy traditional machine learning (ML) models and foundation models (FMs) faster.

As a data scientist or ML practitioner, you can now use the new ModelBuilder class in the SageMaker Python SDK to package models, perform local inference to validate runtime errors, and deploy to SageMaker from your local IDE or SageMaker Studio notebooks.

In SageMaker Studio, new interactive model deployment workflows give you step-by-step guidance on which instance type to choose to find the most optimal endpoint configuration. SageMaker Studio also provides additional interfaces to add models, test inference, and enable auto scaling policies on the deployed endpoints.

New tools in SageMaker Python SDK
The SageMaker Python SDK has been updated with new tools, including ModelBuilder and SchemaBuilder classes that unify the experience of converting models into SageMaker deployable models across ML frameworks and model servers. Model builder automates the model deployment by selecting a compatible SageMaker container and capturing dependencies from your development environment. Schema builder helps to manage serialization and deserialization tasks of model inputs and outputs. You can use the tools to deploy the model in your local development environment to experiment with it, fix any runtime errors, and when ready, transition from local testing to deploy the model on SageMaker with a single line of code.

Amazon SageMaker ModelBuilder

Let me show you how this works. In the following example, I choose the Falcon-7B model from the Hugging Face model hub. I first deploy the model locally, run a sample inference, perform local benchmarking to find the optimal configuration, and finally deploy the model with the suggested configuration to SageMaker.

First, import the updated SageMaker Python SDK and define a sample model input and output that matches the prompt format for the selected model.

Then, create a ModelBuilder instance with the Hugging Face model ID, a SchemaBuilder instance with the sample model input and output, define a local model path, and set the mode to LOCAL_CONTAINER to deploy the model locally. The schema builder generates the required functions for serializing and deserializing the model inputs and outputs.

Next, call build() to convert the PyTorch model into a SageMaker deployable model. The build function generates the required artifacts for the model server, including the inferency.py and serving.properties files.

For FMs, such as Falcon, you can optionally run tune() in local container mode that performs local benchmarking to find the optimal model serving configuration. This includes the tensor parallel degree that specifies the number of GPUs to use if your environment has multiple GPUs available. Once ready, call deploy() to deploy the model in your local development environment.

In my demo, the model returns the following response:

When you’re ready to deploy the model on SageMaker, call deploy() again, set the mode to SAGEMAKLER_ENDPOINT, and provide an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role with appropriate permissions.

This starts deploying your model on a SageMaker endpoint. Once the endpoint is ready, you can run predictions.

You can start the new interactive model deployment workflows by selecting one or more models to deploy from the models landing page or SageMaker JumpStart model details page or by creating a new endpoint from the endpoints details page.

The new workflows help you quickly deploy the selected model(s) with minimal inputs. If you used SageMaker Inference Recommender to benchmark your model, the dropdown will show instance recommendations from that benchmarking.

Without benchmarking your model, the dropdown will display prospective instances that SageMaker predicts could be a good fit based on its own heuristics. For some of the most popular SageMaker JumpStart models, you’ll see an AWS pretested optimal instance type. For other models, you’ll see generally recommended instance types. For example, if I select the Falcon 40B Instruct model in SageMaker JumpStart, I can see the recommended instance types.

However, if I want to optimize the deployment for cost or performance to meet my specific use cases, I could open the Alternate configurations panel to view more options based on data from before benchmarking.

Things to know
Here are a couple of important things to know:

Supported ML models and frameworks – At launch, the new SageMaker Python SDK tools support model deployment for XGBoost and PyTorch models. You can deploy FMs by specifying the Hugging Face model ID or SageMaker JumpStart model ID using the SageMaker LMI container or Hugging Face TGI-based container. You can also bring your own container (BYOC) or deploy models using the Triton model server in ONNX format.

Now available
The new set of tools is available today in all AWS Regions where Amazon SageMaker real-time inference is available. There is no cost to use the new set of tools; you pay only for any underlying SageMaker resources that get created.

Today, I’m happy to introduce the ability to use natural language instructions in Amazon SageMaker Canvas to explore, visualize, and transform data for machine learning (ML).

SageMaker Canvas now supports using foundation model- (FM) powered natural language instructions to complement its comprehensive data preparation capabilities for data exploration, analysis, visualization, and transformation. Using natural language instructions, you can now explore and transform your data to build highly accurate ML models. This new capability is powered by Amazon Bedrock.

Data is the foundation for effective machine learning, and transforming raw data to make it suitable for ML model building and generating predictions is key to better insights. Analyzing, transforming, and preparing data to build ML models is often the most time-consuming part of the ML workflow. With SageMaker Canvas, data preparation for ML is seamless and fast with 300+ built-in transforms, analyses, and an in-depth data quality insights report without writing any code. Starting today, the process of data exploration and preparation is faster and simpler in SageMaker Canvas using natural language instructions for exploring, visualizing, and transforming data.

Data preparation tasks are now accelerated through a natural language experience using queries and responses. You can quickly get started with contextual, guided prompts to understand and explore your data.

Say I want to build an ML model to predict house prices Using SageMaker Canvas. First, I need to prepare my housing dataset to build an accurate model. To get started with the new natural language instructions, I open the SageMaker Canvas application, and in the left navigation pane, I choose Data Wrangler. Under the Data tab and from the list of available datasets, I select the canvas-housing-sample.csv as the dataset, then select Create a data flow and choose Create. I see the tabular view of my dataset and an introduction to the new Chat for data prep capability.

I select Chat for data prep, and it displays the chat interface with a set of guided prompts relevant to my dataset. I can use any of these prompts or query the data for something else.

First, I want to understand the quality of my dataset to identify any outliers or anomalies. I ask SageMaker Canvas to generate a data quality report to accomplish this task.

I see there are no major issues with my data. I would now like to visualize the distribution of a couple of features in the data. I ask SageMaker Canvas to plot a chart.

I now want to filter certain rows to transform my data. I ask SageMaker Canvas to remove rows where the population is less than 1,000. Canvas removes those rows, shows me a preview of the transformed data, and also gives me the option to view and update the code that generated the transform.

I am happy with the preview and add the transformed data to my list of data transform steps on the right. SageMaker Canvas adds the step along with the code.

Now that my data is transformed, I can go on to build my ML model to predict house prices and even deploy the model into production using the same visual interface of SageMaker Canvas, without writing a single line of code.

Amazon SageMaker adds new inference capabilities to help reduce foundation model deployment costs and latency

Today, we are announcing new Amazon SageMaker inference capabilities that can help you optimize deployment costs and reduce latency. With the new inference capabilities, you can deploy one or more foundation models (FMs) on the same SageMaker endpoint and control how many accelerators and how much memory is reserved for each FM. This helps to improve resource utilization, reduce model deployment costs on average by 50 percent, and lets you scale endpoints together with your use cases.

For each FM, you can define separate scaling policies to adapt to model usage patterns while further optimizing infrastructure costs. In addition, SageMaker actively monitors the instances that are processing inference requests and intelligently routes requests based on which instances are available, helping to achieve on average 20 percent lower inference latency.

Key components
The new inference capabilities build upon SageMaker real-time inference endpoints. As before, you create the SageMaker endpoint with an endpoint configuration that defines the instance type and initial instance count for the endpoint. The model is configured in a new construct, an inference component. Here, you specify the number of accelerators and amount of memory you want to allocate to each copy of a model, together with the model artifacts, container image, and number of model copies to deploy.

New inference capabilities in action
You can start using the new inference capabilities from SageMaker Studio, the SageMaker Python SDK, and the AWS SDKs and AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI). They are also supported by AWS CloudFormation.

For this demo, I use the AWS SDK for Python (Boto3) to deploy a copy of the Dolly v2 7B model and a copy of the FLAN-T5 XXL model from the Hugging Face model hub on a SageMaker real-time endpoint using the new inference capabilities.

Before you can create the inference component, you need to create a SageMaker-compatible model and specify a container image to use. For both models, I use the Hugging Face LLM Inference Container for Amazon SageMaker. These deep learning containers (DLCs) include the necessary components, libraries, and drivers to host large models on SageMaker.

Create an inference component for each model
Specify an inference component for each model you want to deploy on the endpoint. Inference components let you specify the SageMaker-compatible model and the compute and memory resources you want to allocate. For CPU workloads, define the number of cores to allocate. For accelerator workloads, define the number of accelerators. RuntimeConfig defines the number of model copies you want to deploy.

Next, you can define separate scaling policies for each model by registering the scaling target and applying the scaling policy to the inference component. Check out the SageMaker Developer Guide for detailed instructions.

The new inference capabilities provide per-model CloudWatch metrics and CloudWatch Logs and can be used with any SageMaker-compatible container image across SageMaker CPU- and GPU-based compute instances. Given support by the container image, you can also use response streaming.
